No further updates yet this morning but this CBC article has good details on the initial attack yesterday evening. Two residents were evacuated immediately by firefighters, the rest are on alert.
The fire is near BC Hydro high voltage transmission lines so the wildfire crews were not able to start on the ground until BCH shut down those lines. Until then, helicopters bucketed the fire.
Wind conditions were also favourable.
Hopefully they’ll have it under control today if the weather continues to cooperate. The CBC article includes a map that shows the fire in relation to downtown Vancouver, but doesn’t point out the location of the Burnaby oil terminal even though it is almost exactly halfway between the two.

Homes now on evacuation alert in Anmore north of Vancouver.

Mark Carney: I don’t care about Climate Change, I’m building another oil pipeline to Burnaby. Canada Strong!
Mother Nature: How strong exactly? Hold my beer.
(A wildfire has broken out on the north side of Burrard Inlet, about 7km northeast of the Burnaby oil terminal, the terminus of the Transmountain Pipeline. It is currently 1.5ha and out of control but updates often come slowly on the web. News reports are that a few homes have been “tactically evacuated” and more evacuations may come according to Metro Vancouver government.)

Quote post by journalist Rachel Gilmore:
When the government claims TMX is mega profitable (Tim Hodgson keeps saying $1 billion a year), remember that we BOUGHT IT for $34 billion.
So it won’t be profitable for *34 years* at this rate, and that’s if oil demand doesn’t decline! (It will!)
It very likely will NEVER be profitable:
-
We know increasing #fossilfuel extraction is madness. #wildfires , #heatwaves, #flood, #cropfailure, #drought . Oil and gas is a highly profitable business that skews our political leaders.
Taxpayer funded #TMX is not profitable. A survey of the industry finds 33% is foreign controlled with the four largest oil companies with 73% foreign share ownership.
The latest #pipeline scheme by Smith and Carney will be the biggest #subsidy to an industry dominated by the USA. #abpoli #canpoli
-
Environmental groups wanted to see clear decarbonization commitment in pipeline plan
-
Burrard Inlet will be dredged in #Vancouver to allow big oil tankers to increase load.
Despite concern from some that it will harm local #marinelife -- returning eelgrass, herring, salmon, seal, and whale populations.
The port says the work will not change the number or size of the largest vessel type currently sailing underneath the Second Narrows, noting that Aframax-class tankers will remain the largest vessels.

@atomicker
I’ve personally witnessed this #Liberal government spraying #Roundup herbicide only a few metres from Brunette Creek (a protected waterway) which leads to a local wetlands area here at the #TMX terminus in #Burnaby. After installing the TMX expansion, they noticed the Japanese Knotweed over growing the area, threatening their new pipeline.
Their “solution” has been to attack the local ecosystem to protect their pipeline at all costs to the environment.
I have no doubt the removal of pesticide regulations is in part connected to #MarkCarney clearing the way for new “National Interest” projects forced through inhospitable areas.
Environmental Regulations aren’t respected as protective guardrails by this Liberal Government, they are only regarded as barriers to success in ramming through environmentally destructive projects.
Removing these regulations only benefits big business interests and offloads the resulting cost on local communities.
-
@miki_lou
No clear route defined through difficult terrain, endangering environmentally protected ecosystems and threatening two major waterways and salmon habitats, yet Dani is already announcing shovels in ground by September 2027?This sends a clear message to investors that there will be more consultation with #Palantir Canada over security concerns than there ever wil be with residents of #BC over environmental concerns.
If #Smith and #Carney think they can force another pipeline through through BC despite fervent opposition from the majority of #bcpoli, they are sniffing too much crude.
This project will be ferociously resisted on the ground, with countless arrests and heated clashes between protesters and police.
Just like #TMX, those openly against this project will be harassed and threatened by #UCP separatists, proud boys, american bots and Oil and Gas barons. All of whom feel BC deserves nothing in return for this destructive project.
Sovereignty for me but not for thee, hey Quisling Dani? The hypocrisy is off the charts.

@avilewis
“Five dimensional chess…” they said. “It’ll never happen!” moaned #elbowsup Liberal voters who conned our #NDP votes in the last election under the guise of “strategic voting”.Despite all the gaslighting, many of us in #BC knew this unneeded pipeline would be forced upon our Province against our will yet again by ANOTHER Liberal Government, despite Carney gleefully stealing our votes to prop up his make believe “majority government”.
I voted against #PierrePoilievre because he was threatening to do exactly what Mark Carney is doing now. Our #elbowsup votes were used against us, not Trump, as Carney grifted.
Mark Carney has taught me a valuable lesson though. Never again will I vote strategically, and never again will I vote #Liberal. Fool me twice, shame on me.
Two dirty bitumen pipelines in 2 decades running roughshod over British Columbians, First Nations and our longstanding environmental regulations.
#MarkCarney has hung an dead albatross around this Liberal Party’s neck. They will now reek of oil and federal overreach for decades to come.
Shame on #Carney and all of his sycophantic supporters who have abandoned the left, First Nations, and British Columbia; all in pursuit of oil money and appeasing a separatist traitor.
This overkill pipeline will be the most costly pipeline ever built in Canada. It’s environmental costs will be socialized in BC and it’s measly gains privitized in separatist #Alberta.
It will be shoved without environmental assessment through forest fire prone areas and pristine ecosystems, destroying our species at risk.
Whoever builds it will need to pay for round the clock security everyday to defend it, just as they needed with #TMX. The price, both environmental and financial will be through the roof.
Eventually Canadians (who said this would never happen) will foot the bill for this open pollution of our once beautiful Westcoast; removing our tanker protections, destroying our species at risk, endangering community livelihoods and coastal industries through decades of future pollution in the Strait.
Shame on Carney (you are no unifier), and shame on this Liberal Government. You stand for nothing but austerity, big money and big oil and true Canadians see it.

Well that's an improvement at least!
“Smith said the oil pipeline that she's advocating to be built to the B.C. coast would not terminate at Kitimat because the area is too "complex" for oil tankers to navigate.”(I suspect the Coastal First Nation opposition is an unspoken part as well)
Now to cross Prince Rupert off the list... as well as any further expansion of TMX.

the at least $18 B cost.
That is $18 B of new subsidies, from your linked article "taxpayers could end up contributing up to CAD 18.8 billion in subsidies".
It's already over $35 B of direct, sunk cost, or over $40 B if we're counting indirect sunk subsidies:
The direct funding Canada provided for TMX totals $35.6 billion—roughly
$1.4 billion more than typically reported. The indirect financial subsidies raise government exposure to over $40 billion.Note that $40 B figure does NOT include externalities!!! It does NOT price in greenhouse gasses, the risk of pipeline damage from landslides or atmospheric river flooding, there is no risk-costed contribution from possible tanker accidents, etc.
and even if TMX operates at capacity for 20 years under some miraculously free carbon capture technology,
More than $25 billion of the funding is ineligible for recovery via proposed
shipping tolls. Canada’s ability to recoup the remainder of its investment is limited by toll-setting issues. Taxpayers will likely take a large hit#CDNPoli #Canada #CanPoli #ABPoli #Alberta #BC #BCPoli #TMX #pipeline #pipelines #OilAndGas #FossilFuels

“There is this incredible revisionist history,” said Amy Janzwood, a political science assistant professor at McGill University. “It’s like, ’We bought #TMX, look how profitable it can be.’ Profitable is not the word we should be using at all.” #canpoli
Is Trans Mountain’s Profitabil... -
Same as it ever was. 🫤
But hey! Let’s build another!
“The new balance-sheet profits are thanks to an employee-less shell company called TMP Finance, which holds billions of the pipeline’s debts on its account, shielding Trans Mountain Corp. from its interest costs.
When all its debts are factored in, Gunton estimates the pipeline lost around $166 million in the first six months of 2025, a loss that raises questions about Ottawa’s ability to fulfil a pledge to direct millions from Trans Mountain’s revenues to climate initiatives.
Now those losses may be about to deepen.
That’s because the oil companies that use the pipeline are fighting to reduce their rents by around $545 million each year. The oil companies’ 20-year pipeline contracts are already heavily discounted and set to cover only around half the pipeline’s cost. Further reducing the tolls could force taxpayers to cover an additional $11 billion in costs.”

I openly opposed #TMX on #Twitter a decade ago. As a result, I received constant online harassment, death threats and regular late night phone calls from machines that just said “goodbye” then hung up.
For all those saying “This pipeline will never happen”, there are many more right wing Canadian #MAGA bullies who are ready to push the point.
Sadly, as of my recent anti #NorthernGateway posts, the late night calls have resumed. Last night’s came at 4AM to my cellphone.
#MarkCarney has no idea of the hate storm he’s released on #BC due to his partnership with #DanielleSmith on this bullshit #MOU.
Intimidation and harassment in #Canada is a very real thing. Many Canadians unaffected and unconcerned with this pipeline have no idea what would happen if they openly opposed it.
This is the reality for #climatedefenders under #Liberals who have once again emboldened the worst people n Canada.
I hesitated to speak out against this new pipeline, knowing the harassment would continue. But that’s their intention, to intimidate me into silence.
So late night phone calls again it is. Last time this triggered me so much I spent way more time openly opposing the pipeline to spite the hate.
This pipeline will probably get built, despite all those minimizing by saying it won’t. I know this because of the constant misinformation in the #MSM and on #Facebook, skewed polls in favor of the pipeline meant to nudge public opinion, and the start of a new harassment and intimidation campaign by right wing lunatics.
The machine has once again awoken and anti Climate Liberals are at the wheel, steering Canada away from clean options while letting #Conservative goons do their dirty work.
Northern Gateway is a Nation Burning Project not “Nation Building” as Mark Carney would have you believe.
We will resist this pipeline and we will continue to fight, despite biased Canadian Media and #MapleMAGA threats and harassment.
This will be the most costly pipeline ever built in Canada, both financially and politically. If built, Liberals will carry this oil-soaked albatross for a generation.
Carney’s betrayal will cost them dearly, as dearly as opposing another dirty oil pipeline will cost all of us in #BC.

@tabmcleo toxic, carciogenic, and unrecoverable in ocean water, #bitumen should be banned. Force oil companies to upgrade their bitumen to crude oil, or face high environmental taxes. #bcpoli.
But we all know there is no business case for any more pipelines, but it is entertaining to see both Danielle Smith and Mark Carney score political points without any snowball’s chance in climate roasted hell of a project even being proposed. #tmx #oilandgas #climatecrisis

💯🎯 Stewart Prest, UBC political scientist comment wrt Premier Smith booed by UCP re AB-Ottawa/Federal govt energy MOU:
"With TMX the federal Liberals basically did what Carney is promising to do—pushed a pipeline to the coast over BC and Indigenous objections. They even federally funded it, dispensing with the need for a business case.
It didn't even move the needle. Why would a second pipeline be different?"

Same thing happened with #TMX. Discussion turned from “this will never happen” to “this is happening just shut up and accept it” on a dime. No consent required, no votes required. Abusive, forceful authoritarian Liberal Federal governments are now the Canadian norm.
Bye bye #Liberals, don’t let the door hit your Neo-Con asses on the way out!
-
In supporting #DanielleSmith’s demands to force yet another bitumen pipeline on British Columbia, oil drunk #Liberals are done in #BC.
Voting strategically for #MarkCarney despite my continued rage over the environmental destruction #TMX has wreaked on #Burnaby and #BC was the dumbest leap of faith I’ve ever taken at the polls. Conservative kiss-ass Carney can kiss his strategic voters in BC goodbye.
This is no “nation building” project, it is a capitulation to Big Oil pressure under the guise of nationalism, and the start of yet another federal war on British Columbia and all those protecting it.
This dirty, useless, expensive project won’t get done without shady #American or #Saudi investors, #Palantir drones patrolling the skies of Northern BC, and the inevitable sacrifice and destruction of our beautiful coastline for Alberta’s greedy, dirty oil economy.
This project will be Mark Carney’s albatross to bear, hope it was worth it for these pitiful Liberal Traitors.

Since multiple Ottawa CBC reporters seem utterly incapable of understanding what First Nations groups are what in BC here are some facts about the Coastal First Nations. It has existed since 2003.
https://coastalfirstnations.ca/about/
"The Great Bear Initiative Society (a non-profit society under the BC Societies Act), also known as Coastal First Nations-Great Bear Initiative (CFN), is an alliance of First Nations on the North Pacific Coast that includes the Gitga’at, Gitxaała, Haida, Heiltsuk, Kitasoo Xai’xais, Metlakatla, Nuxalk and Wuikinuxv First Nations. " Their territories span on the mainland coast of BC from the top of Vancouver Island to the Alaska Border including Haida Gwaii.

“Government-owned Trans Mountain heads to hearings this fall at the Canada Energy Regulator in its dispute with its shippers over the tolls those fossil fuel companies pay to move crude to the West Coast.Trans Mountain wants them to bear a greater share of the extra costs in the expansion project that ballooned to a final total of $34-billion. Its customers argue the cost over-runs were unreasonable, and the high tolls leave them uncompetitive against global peers.”
So once again, the world’s most profitable industry wants the taxpayers to subsidize their operations. Color me shocked. 😑

Pushing back on oil pipes discussion. I dont see any govt money going to pipelines after #TMX. (Unfortunately i still see fed tax$ going to magical carbon sequestration. ) There is no ROI on future pipelines, and without tax $ they will not be built.
ZEV Mandate. Detroit auto cos in Canada are the problem. The ZEV rejig should favour smaller EVs with lower prices. Made in Canada should attract higher credits.
New policies must be multipronged

*One of my fierce sisters from another mister & fellow land/forest/water protectors, Jocey Alec & her family from #Wetsuweten #FirstNation are in this #documentary.
The #BCNDP & #GovernmentOfCanada are both still trying to criminalize environmental & #IndigenousSovereignty activism. The #BCgovernment created #RCMPCIRG in 2017 to crackdown on protestors. They are strictly a corporate mercenaries branch serving industry interests not public interests. Citizens tax monies are being exploited by BC NDP to pay these militarized thugs to commit violence so #ecocide corporations can profit more.*
Is #Canada at a point of no return, suffering the effects of #ClimateChange and worsening #wildfire seasons? Two controversial pipelines, the #TransMountain Expansion Project #TMX and #CoastalGasLink #CGL are being expanded and threatening the natural home of historically oppressed First Nations in Canada. But several First Nations are leading the fight against these massive #pipelines and becoming key advocates for protecting #nature from climate change.
Being a #LandDefender comes at a cost: harassment, detentions by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police

You are missing the underlying strategy. Sometimes achieving objectives may not be a straight line. I see what Carney is doing. He reads the room and makes incremental advances.
EV’s are already a wining technology for all the businesses and consumers that drive them.
On the oil pipelines anybody with market savvy knows no private oil co (or group) will sign up as a proponent because doing so would kill their share prices. Never again #tmx
