CRTC combined 3 separate R&Vs (Teksavvy , CNOC, Mektel) on the luducrious 77 decision into a single file today.

  6. Almost scary. Made a #CRTC submission yesterday which included wireless incumbents fees for SIM cards. And now I am getting an ad from Telenor producing some SIM cards. Likely because I did some google searches.

apparently SGP.32 is a new protocol for eSIM provisioning.

  7. #CRTC approves new area code 851 to provide relief for 782/902 area code in NS/PEI, effective May 27, 2028. crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2026/20

  8. @rexbron @dyckron It is actually worse. The wholesale price TSI and others are complaininga bout is only for the last mile, the fibre between the house and the central office. The #CRTC mandated wholesale price for this is higher than many of the Bell Canada and flanker brand offers for full retail Internet access.

  9. The #CRTC has revoked, at Rogers's request, the network broadcast licence for Hockey Night in Canada, in light of the end of the CBC/Rogers NHL agreement crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2026/20 (The licence was required because the deal gave Rogers de facto control over CBC TV during those broadcasts.)

  10. #CRTC approves power increase (from 30W to 1772W) for Kingston community radio station CKVI-FM (91.9 The Cave) under new rules that bypass a formal hearing for low-power stations seeking full-power protected status. crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2026/20

  12. @EdwinG #CRTC Telecom Regulatory Policy 2017-200 Review of the Wireless Code

    crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2017/20

Look for "Unlocking" at paragraph 261, then "Commission Analisis and determination". at 291

    and at paragraph 311:
starting no later than 1 December 2017, any devices provided by a WSP to the customer for the purpose of providing wireless services must be provided unlocked

Telus is doing this due to loss of its lucrative roaming revenues sicne people just load esims whenever traveling.

  13. @EdwinG device locking made illegal in 2017. Someone will have ti challenge this but #CRTC is lobby driver now so will likely just accept it

  14. TELUS will bring back device locking to their network starting 30 July 2026 “to prevent theft and fraud”

  15. 2009 throttling decision:
Review of the Internet traffic management practices of Internet service providers
    crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2009/20

    2017 "no zero rating" decision:
    crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2017/20

Note: after 2009-657 Bell continued to throttle individual apps but as it upgraded its network the new routers were too fast for its throttling boxes, so Bell took it out). But there were also threats of filing a Part 1 challenging their non-neutral selection of which packets to throttle.

  16. As a result of this brouhaha, #CRTC created a public notice of consultation ( 2016-192 differential pricing practices of Internet data plans

    2017-04-20, CRTC issued:
    Telecom Regulatory Policy CRTC 2017-104
Framework for assessing the differential pricing practices of Internet service providers

In 2009, CRTC soft banned throttling of only certain apps. With 2017-104 prohibited zero-rating of certain traffic (eg: Bell Video doesn't count towards gig limit but Netflix does).

  17. (#CRTC cont)

PIAC never filed a stay, filed their Part 1 with #CRTC
and when I filed mine, PIAC filed a procedural letter requesting CRTC reject my submission, accusing me of plagiarism.

PIAC was so widely criticised for its procedural request that it managed to have its letter pulled from the record, making me look like I was responding to imaginary letter that wasn't there.

Had PIAC succeeded, it would have had sole reply to all submissions (Part 1) and made more money.

  18. When Vidéotron launched its "Musique Illimitée" service, I annouced on Twitter I would file a Part 1 due to "net neutrality" concept violation. (27(2) undue preverence in Telecom Act).

An hour of two later I got phone call from the PIAC lawyer suggesting we file at same time, then insisiting he needed to file first because they were to file a "stay" with court to first stop the Videotron service. I agreed

  19. Wow. what bitterness. FRPC which used to be on cosnumer's side requests my #CRTC submisison be pulled because it was filed late.

  20. #CRTC launches formal proceeding requiring Bell, Rogers and Telus to justify why they are charging fees for "device handling", "setup", eSIMs and shipping in apparent violation of activation fee bans, threatening to fine up to $10 million and hold executives liable crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2026/20

  21. yeah ! @tamir_CA would be proud of me ! The broadcasting people accepted my submission on the 29th (Monday) which had been due on the 25th (Thursday) despite my having no excuse other than simply having forgotten the deadline.

What is interesting in this public consultation is that it is just one cycle of submisisons and replies are not (yet) planned).
#CRTC (when you submit late, you have to provide a letter with the excuse for being late).

  22. #CRTC adds WPBS-TV Watertown, NY, to list of U.S. TV stations authorized for distribution in Canada, allowing TV providers to add the station to their lineups without requiring a specific condition of licence to do so crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2026/20

  23. @chris The #CRTC is also the most ineffective and corrupt part of every federal government in many decades.
