  6. CARDIFF AIRPORT: First direct WestJet flight from Toronto touches down — restoring Wales’ first direct link to Canada in nearly 20 years

Wales is back on the map for direct transatlantic travel — after the first WestJet flight from Toronto landed at Cardiff Airport on Saturday, restoring a direct link between Wales and Canada that has been missing for nearly 20 years.

The Boeing 737-8 MAX touched down on the runway at Rhoose to a traditional water cannon salute from the airport’s fire crews — a ceremonial welcome reserved for inaugural flights and other major aviation milestones.

The new four-times-a-week service had been first announced last year, and the launch follows months of preparation at the south Wales hub. Passengers on board the inaugural flight were greeted by a local Penarth choir, Criw Canu, who sang Welsh songs at the foot of the aircraft steps as the crew disembarked.

Toronto Pearson International Airport is one of the largest aviation hubs in North America, with onward connections to more than 100 destinations across Canada and the United States — including Calgary, Halifax, Vancouver, Florida and New York.

The launch was attended by Plaid Cymru leader and Cabinet Minister for Enterprise, Connectivity and Energy, Adam Price MS, alongside the Leader of the Vale of Glamorgan Council Cllr Lis Burnett, Lord-Lieutenant of South Glamorgan Morfudd Meredith, Ontario’s Agent-General in London Sophia Arvanitis, and senior figures from Visit Wales.

Adam Price MS said the new service was a major moment for Wales’ economic prospects.

He said: “WestJet’s inaugural flight from Cardiff to Toronto is a powerful signal to the world that our nation is open for business.”

He added: “Direct transatlantic connectivity like this is exactly what Welsh businesses need to reach new markets, attract investment and grow — and it reinforces our ambition to make Wales one of the best-connected economies in the UK. Cardiff Airport is a vital piece of our economic infrastructure, and today’s milestone is something to celebrate.”

While Saturday’s launch restores direct flights between Wales and North America, there is still no sign of a return for Qatar Airways — the Middle East carrier whose Doha route gave Cardiff Airport its only direct link to the Middle East, Asia, Africa and Australasia until it was suspended during the pandemic and never restored. The Welsh Conservatives called earlier this year for the route’s return to be made an “utmost priority” for the Welsh Government, which owns the airport.

The launch also comes during a period of significant change at the airport. Earlier this month it appointed a new cargo expert as part of its push to become a regional freight hub.

Jon Bridge, Chief Executive Officer of Cardiff Airport, said: “Today is a landmark moment for Cardiff Airport and Wales. The arrival of WestJet’s direct service gives customers easier access to Toronto and onward destinations across North America. It firmly strengthens Cardiff Airport’s position as the international gateway for Wales.”

He added: “We are proud to welcome WestJet and excited about the long-term potential of this partnership.”

Chris White-DeVries, WestJet’s Senior Manager for Hub Strategy and Airport Affairs, said the new route was an exciting milestone for the airline as well as the communities it would serve.

He said: “WestJet’s new seasonal offering makes it easier for more people to discover everything South Wales and Canada have to offer, while staying closely connected to friends, family and business opportunities. Cardiff plays an important role in our growing transatlantic network, and we are proud to offer our guests from Wales more convenient access to Canada.”

The new service is seasonal — running through the summer months — and will operate four times a week. Flights from Toronto to Cardiff depart at 22:10 on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Return flights from Cardiff to Toronto depart at 11:35 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Cardiff Airport says it supports thousands of jobs across south Wales and contributes more than £200 million annually to the Welsh economy. The airport operates both the main commercial terminal at Rhoose and the nearby St Athan Airport site.

Earlier this month Swansea Bay News published a guide to what to do in Toronto for passengers planning to take advantage of the new route.

#WestJet continues to make #AirCanada look good...

This happened to me last Christmas. I got bumped from my flight - the reroute was going to leave from a different city (which they didn't provide transport too???) and put me at my destination over 36hrs later. They claimed weather was the cause - yet skytracker showed my original flight took off an hour later.

Thankfully, AirCanada had me on a different flight leaving from my City the next morning and direct to my destination...

  17. CARDIFF AIRPORT: Direct flights to Toronto launch in three weeks — here’s why Canada’s most exciting city should be on your radar this summer

Wales is about to get its first direct transatlantic air link in nearly 20 years – and the timing could not be better for a summer city break.

WestJet, Canada’s second largest airline, launches four weekly direct flights between Cardiff Airport and Toronto on 22 May – just three weeks away. It is the first time Wales has had a direct connection to Canada since 2008, and the airline has chosen Cardiff as its exclusive airport in Wales and England for the whole of 2026.

The last direct air link between Wales and Canada was operated by Zoom Airlines, which offered seasonal flights to Toronto before ceasing operations in 2008. Since then, travellers between Wales and Canada have had to rely on connecting services via London or other European hubs – making the WestJet service the first direct connection in nearly 20 years.

The flight time is around eight hours on a Boeing 737 MAX 8, making it a comfortable overnight trip that puts you in Toronto in time for breakfast. With four weekly departures, there is plenty of flexibility for both short breaks and longer stays.

Toronto itself is one of North America’s most visited and most liveable cities – a genuinely world-class destination that many UK travellers overlook in favour of New York. With a population of nearly three million and more than 200 languages spoken across the city, it is arguably the most culturally diverse city on the planet, and its food scene reflects that.

The city’s most iconic sight is the CN Tower – 553 metres tall, with observation decks, a glass floor and the EdgeWalk, billed as the world’s highest full-circle hands-free walk. But the real charm of Toronto lies in its neighbourhoods.

The Distillery District, a pedestrianised cobblestone quarter of repurposed Victorian industrial buildings, is home to galleries, breweries and independent restaurants. Kensington Market is cheaper and scrappier – vintage clothing, street food from around the world, and no chain restaurants in sight.

For the waterfront, the Toronto Islands are a short ferry ride from downtown and offer beaches, bike hire and sweeping views of the city skyline. Two to three days covers the highlights comfortably, with three to four days giving you room to breathe – and possibly a day trip. Niagara Falls is just 90 minutes away by car or tour bus, and the Blue Mountain ski and outdoor area is two hours north.

This summer is a particularly good moment to visit. Toronto is one of six host cities for the 2026 FIFA World Cup – jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States – with six group stage matches at BMO Field between 12 June and 2 July.

Tickets for the matches are not easy to come by, but the atmosphere across the city during the tournament is expected to be extraordinary, with fan zones, food festivals and events throughout the summer.

WestJet launches direct flights between Cardiff and Toronto from 22 May 2026. Image: WestJet

For those who want to go further, Toronto is also a gateway to the rest of Canada and North America. WestJet’s extensive network from Toronto Pearson International Airport includes onward connections to Vancouver, Calgary and Montreal – opening up the Rocky Mountains, the British Columbia coast and the French-speaking culture of Quebec to anyone flying via Cardiff.

Fares for the Cardiff to Toronto route are competitively priced, with one-way tickets available from around £300. Those flying during the World Cup period are advised to book accommodation well in advance – hotel prices in Toronto are expected to surge significantly during June and July.

The new WestJet service also arrives at a moment of renewed ambition for Cardiff Airport. Passenger numbers have been growing steadily toward one million a year, and the Welsh Government has committed long-term investment to strengthen the airport’s international links. The Toronto route is the most significant addition to the airport’s long-haul offering in a generation.

Whether you are planning a first visit to Canada, a long-awaited trip to see Niagara Falls, or simply want to spend a long weekend in one of the world’s great food cities – and with the government now acting to protect summer flights from disruption – the Cardiff to Toronto service makes transatlantic travel from Wales easier and more affordable than it has been for nearly two decades.

  18. Okay, boarded the plane.

I initially could not fit my carryon in the overhead bin and turned bright red in embarrassment as I held up everyone behind me.

I brought my luggage back down and asked for help on the second try and it magically slid in the bin. Thanks to the male passengers behind me who offered to help then congratulated me.

  19. WestJet told passengers flights were cancelled for safety. Records suggest otherwise

Canada’s regulations for airlines are weak. Politicians are simultaneously the most flexible and the weakest link of any system of governance. Politicians are always incentivized to focus on the maintenance of power, creating or seeking gate keepers and keeping these keepers paid in exchange.

Why Canada does not have default fines and compensation menus in favour of airline riders for a crucial public service like air flight?

There was just one problem: Neufeld — a licensed small plane pilot — said the plane was not de-iced while he was on it.

Meanwhile, using publicly available flight info, Neufeld and Lukács uncovered a different sequence of events.

Just eight minutes before Neufeld’s flight was cancelled, WestJet had reassigned the aircraft, which instead flew from Edmonton to Kelowna, B.C., and back that day. For Neufeld’s trip, the airline brought in a different plane — one with mechanical issues.

It was a game of “musical chairs” that the company did not disclose in court documents, said Lukács.

“It’s very serious misconduct, because WestJet had all the knowledge to tell the court, ‘We swapped the aircraft.’ They did not do that.”

Mehta checked the flight records and learned the plane previously assigned to his flight was still flying that day, completing multiple routes.

“I could definitely see that the aircraft was not grounded for maintenance,” he said. “It was kind of heartbreaking for me to have these findings.”

Mehta wrote to WestJet with the new information. Hearing nothing, he wrote again two weeks later, but the denial held.

Flight records reviewed by Go Public shows that Mehta’s case was similar to Neufeld’s: WestJet swapped out the assigned aircraft for a different plane, then cancelled the flight about an hour later, claiming it was for unplanned maintenance.

“This is surprising,” said Mehta, who was unaware of the last-minute aircraft change. “This is definitely a big development.”

I'm only ~186cm tall, and this is a problem I've struggled with for my entire adult life.

My knees are often tender or partially bruised at the end of a flight, and I can usually feel the weight of the person in front of me pushing against my knees through the seat materials - they can never lean their chair back, my legs physically won't allow it.

Oh, and this is all on the "standard" planes, not these extra tight ones.

  24. How many times do these situations have to happen before government stops hanging out at the the lobbyist's cocktail party and actually does its job regulating companies and protecting citizens?

“If the airline is unable to re-book a passenger on its own or partner airlines departing within 48 hours of the original departure time, they have to buy the passenger’s seat ticket on the next available flight of any carrier. And that means including competitors. That’s what the law says, that’s what WestJet has to do. The problem is that WestJet is flouting the law. WestJet treats the law as if it was just friendly recommendations.”
