It was eventually time to sit down to eat at Casa Warmi ("Woman's House"), an all -female run restaurant with a strong and relevant message. Just a piece of it now because I will deal with it in more detail later.
From their menu:

I was walking around taking photos of the many murals and interesting architecture when I came upon this colorful independent film theater: Ocho Y Medio.
In English, the name is 8 1/2. If you don’t get the reference, then you might need to brush up on your Fellini.
It’s got a popular cafe and serves as a cultural hub in this district. Went by it several times and it was always buzzing. Tree lights on the street nearby came on as dusk fell. I bet the area really gets going after dark.
This is the way independent film theaters should be.

What do I mean by peak Floresta? These superfans had created by hand all kinds of souvenirs, hoodies, and film characters. They had stills from Ghibli films and movie posters in Spanish. The whole thing was clearly a labor of love and I just felt special being in there.
But the highlight of the small venue was their tiny theater. There was a screen on one wall and a few seats around a small table. All the walls were painted in precise detail with Ghibli characters, one serpent crossing walls as the main focus.
Now in the hot afternoon, I opted for an iced coffee. The server said, “If you like chocolate..” and I didn’t need to hear anything else. Check out how they were served.

Needing coffee, I headed to CaféLab. They serve Café Hildago.
🌳 The folks at CH cultivate coffee at three elevations, taking advantage of ecologically favorable microclimates and keeping the overstory, usually carob trees. Each elevation generates a different flavor profile.
☕ They prioritize sustainability, even hand-pick the beans, and control the entire process from bean to my cup here. Sounds pretty costly, but my cappuccino was about $3.50. And it was excellent! More about the breakfast later.
Hoping the caffeine will help me adapt to the elevation, I am on to La Floresta!

I awaken to bright light from my bedroom window, breaking through the thin curtain. The sun is rising over the bohemian La Floresta neighborhood. I take a pic.
🎨 In recent years, artists have moved in here and made it much more colorful. Murals abound. It's the perfect central spot to base your Quito experience, yet few do it.
🚶♂️➡️ Today I explore its food, chocolate, art, architecture, and whatever else it has to offer. As always, my lens is culture and environment.
☕ But first, Ecuadorian coffee. Am I contributing to deforestation by drinking it? Let's see.
