  1. Hype for the Future 247/284: Maryland’s Eastern Shore

Introduction The Eastern Shore of the State of Maryland is a notable area east of the Susquehanna River and Chesapeake Bay in the State of Maryland and is most commonly associated with Cecil, Kent, Queen Anne’s, Caroline, Talbot, Dorchester, Wicomico, Somerset, and Worcester Counties. While Kent County is associated with the extreme southwestern portion of the Greater Philadelphia area, the more southerly counties of the State of Maryland are associated with rural communities and larger […]

  2. Larvae (or triungulins) of Violet Oil Beetle (Meloe violaceus) on the outskirts of #Bath #Somerset #UK. These hang about on flowers and grab hold of the hairs of visiting solitary bees, which carry them to their nests, where they feed on the bee larvae and the stashed pollen. Oil beetles do not seriously affect bee populations - the presence of parasites and parasitoids like oil beetles is indicative of a healthy, functioning ecosystem

  3. Hype for the Future 63K: Town of Fairfield, Maine

Overview The Town of Fairfield is actually located not in Kennebec County, as may have been suggested in Article 63J, but within the limits of Somerset County further north. While the village area is effectively a northward extension of the City of Waterville in Kennebec County, the vast majority of the Town of Fairfield remains largely undeveloped or at a smaller scale, with the Kennebec Valley Community College area along the Kennebec River and Route 201 providing access to the L.C. Bates […]

  4. Are there any GNU/Linux users here from the Central Somerset area? I'm interested in the idea of running 'install parties' for local people who would like to switch from Mac and especially Windows now that many people's hardware is about to become unsupported. Is anyone already doing this? Or would like to do it with me? Or would just like to connect as a fellow enthusiast?!

  5. “Spider for tea?” I said “No, not for me!”
So the Robin with barely a frown,
Quickly did eat its eight-legged treat,
Which must have tickled on the way down.

European #Robin with Garden #Spider prey, at RSPB Ham Wall, #Somerset, at the beginning of this month.

  6. Today is St Ethelburg’s Day!

6th February is also the feast day of her husband, King Ine.

Ethelburg. Queen of Wessex. Battle leader. Traveller. Pilgrim. Nun.

There's a whole chapter about the fascinating Ethelburg in Unsung Women in Somerset. Out now! books2read.com/unsung

Pictured is the holy well where Ine and Ethelburg’s friend St Aldhelm died. Located in Doulting, it's worth a visit in my opinion.

  7. #OnThisDay in 1879, Dr Annie Wainwright Hyatt was born. She was a trailblazer at a time when it was very difficult for women to become doctors. Plus she worked through both world wars in the Shepton Mallet area.

Pictured is Shepton Mallet from the early 1900s.

#qotd Have you read books with medical themes?

  8. Today's brief awake time despite #neuro illness saw me tackle a couple of piles. Stuff sorted. Things put away, things brought out for attention (inc books to read). Things to go to #charity shops including lots of #DandieDinmontTerrier club magazines. My gggg-granddad in the #ScottishBorders was a pioneering early breeder. I recorded a video talk about him some years ago - link below. My husband also grew up with #Dandies next door in rural #Somerset. youtube.com/watch?v=FRq6XqoNn_ #Dogs #Dogstodon

Or it's sometimes recorded as 9th July. We can celebrate on both days!

  12. Walkers are Welcome Town - Shepton Mallet

Shepton Mallet is perfectly positioned to explore the countryside around us, nestled as it is at the gateway to the Mendip hills, an area of outstanding natural beauty criss-crossed with trails, footpaths and the remains of ancient and medieval industry and workings.
