  1. 10th September

Today in 1816, Mary Shelley and her husband, Percy, arrived in Bath. Mary’s journal states: “Arrive at Bath about two – dine and spend the evening in looking for lodgings”.

Mary didn’t spend that much time in Somerset, but her stay in Bath was very significant. Staying until early 1817, she wrote much of Frankenstein whilst living there. She was only 19 at the time.

Mary features in On This Day in Somerset.

  9. Larvae (or triungulins) of Violet Oil Beetle (Meloe violaceus) on the outskirts of #Bath #Somerset #UK. These hang about on flowers and grab hold of the hairs of visiting solitary bees, which carry them to their nests, where they feed on the bee larvae and the stashed pollen. Oil beetles do not seriously affect bee populations - the presence of parasites and parasitoids like oil beetles is indicative of a healthy, functioning ecosystem

  11. Nettle-leaved Bellflower, growing in a cemetary in #Bath #Somerset #UK. It's usually a woodland plant, so I was surprised to find it growing out in the open, amongst the graves.
