“… [U]rban floods are not merely hydraulic events; they also transport sewage, pathogens, and other contaminants across streets and communities, leading to significant public health risks…
How do we quantify microbial contamination in near real time during a flood event, when emergency conditions make field sampling unsafe, sparse, or even impossible?...
[The authors] explored whether Earth observation data, combined with machine learning, could bridge this critical monitoring gap. By combining Landsat-derived water surface temperature, machine learning, a coupled MIKE+ Flood–ECO Lab hydrodynamic–ecological model, and Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment (QMRA), [they] estimated microbial concentrations (𝘌. 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘪), simulated their fate and transport during floods, and quantified the associated human health risks.
The takeaway: predicting flood risk isn't just about where the water goes; it's about what it's carrying and who it puts in harm's way. Earth observation and machine learning can help close that gap when it matters most, during the emergency, not weeks after…”

    "KEY POINTS:
    • Groundwater inflow enhances winter lake ice thickness by stabilizing the water column and reducing vertical mixing
    • Ice responses to groundwater are strongest in coastal zones due to higher flux and shallow bathymetry
    • Including groundwater in coupled models improves understanding of ice formation and winter lake processes…”

#peces #fish #hidrodinamica #hydrodynamic

  4. "Here, we present a classical analog of interaction-free #measurement using the hydrodynamic pilot-wave system, in which a droplet self-propels across a vibrating fluid surface, guided by a wave of its own making. We argue that existing rationalizations of interaction-free #quantum measurement in terms of particles being guided by waveforms allow for a classical description manifest in our #hydrodynamic system, wherein the measurement is decidedly not interaction-free."

  7. I've submitted a paper to #nldl2024! This is my first real #conference submission.

Title: Towards AI for approximating hydrodynamic simulations as a 2D segmentation task

Alternate title: Abusing image segmentation to approximate physics based simulations /lh

  8. Our team working hard to analyze the complex patterns of #CompoundFlooding in New York, during the National Water Center Summer Institute 2023 in Tuscaloosa.

By using #hydrologic & #hydrodynamic coupled modeling and #MachineLearning, we're trying to understand the key drivers of #flooding events in #NYC under different #ClimateChange scenarios.
