    “In this paper [1st link above], [the authors] seek to answer the question “what is the relative distribution of exposure to coastal hazards around the Irish coast, and where can coastal habitats potentially reduce exposure?”
    The method [they] chose to achieve this was the Coastal Vulnerability Model (CVM), within the InVEST software suite. This involves combining the key physical and climatic variables which can show us where along the coast might be most adversely affected by extreme winds, powerful waves and surges, and sea level rise.
    It also reveals the potential protection provided by coastal habitats, such as dunes and saltmarsh, as well as populations and sites of cultural heritage located within zones deemed “Very High Exposure”.
    [They] tested variations to the model, including seeing how the results change when certain variables are left out, what happens if we add in other variables, and how ranking choices impact exposure distribution. The results show that these choices, especially the ranking methods, can have large impacts on hazard distribution and the overall interpretation of the results. However, [they] found that the CVM quintile based approach was most suitable for Ireland, as it reveals high exposure sites on the east coast, which tends to be overlooked when different methods are applied.

    #BrunswickME - "The internal watchdog at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has found that about 100 of the nation's most #contaminated toxic waste sites, including one in #Maine, are in areas prone to #NaturalDisasters, posing a potential public health threat.

    "The EPA's Office of Inspector General issued two new reports last week that are part of a series assessing the weather-related vulnerabilities of the 157 federal #Superfund sites prioritized for cleanup due to the serious risk they pose to public health and the environment. About 3 million Americans live within a mile of a Superfund site, while 13 million people live within 3 miles.

    "Brunswick Landing, the site of the former #BrunswickNavalAirStation, is among the Superfund sites that were found to be at risk from multiple natural-disaster threats. According to the Inspector General, Brunswick Landing is one of 49 sites in coastal areas that are at risk from #SeaLevelRise or #StormSurge from hurricanes. Many of those sites are located near highly populated areas and important ecological locales like #ChesapeakeBay .

    "Brunswick Landing is also one of 47 low-lying sites that are specifically prone to inland flooding from heavy rain. The Inspector General's review also found 31 sites in areas at high risk for wildfires."

  7. “If you think about previous instances of major inundations, such as Hurricane Katrina, that will start to paint the picture for what you might imagine has happened along Western Alaska,” U.S. Coast Guard Sector Western Alaska Capt. Christopher Culpepper said at a briefing Monday afternoon.

    “It is absolute devastation,” said Culpepper, who is also the Coast Guard’s U.S. Arctic Commanding Officer, describing Kipnuk and Kwigillingok. “If you imagine the worst-case scenario, that’s what we’re dealing with.”
