"Our new champion will be determined by a series of tests," the elder said.
The young hopefuls listened eagerly.
"First, each candidate must climb a tree and plant our flag, high enough to be seen from across the field."
"Second, each of you must calm a horse in the paddock and lead it safely back to the barn. The horses will be spooked by briefly playing wolf howling sounds."
"Finally," he gestured towards the long table, "each of you must eat a bowlful of raw kale."
"Why kale?" asked one young woman, puzzled.
"It grew well this year and we have a surplus. We mustn't waste food."

3. Hot weather urban #garden gleaning #salad: chard, nasturtium, purple #kale, snap peas, sorrel, pea shoots, parsley. Old pesto from freezer made w/CSA leftover garlic scapes & basil, sunflower seeds and olive oil. Dressing: Costco artichokes from back of my cabinet.
