  1. You realise how #google has been using #security #trust and lots of such synonyms to showcase their nonsense steps as worthy. They know they have lost the actual #trust in people, so they are trying useless things and giving it name of trust and security and blah blah. What a bunch of crap.
Stop kidding yourself foogle. You are not fooling anyone, and for sure you are not at all trustworthy. Hollow words and useless changes which further lock everyone out, is unfair usage of your powers. @EUCommission seriously you need to STOP these nonsense from #foogle who should be stripped off their powers.

Like I said, bring them down to their knees and make them beg us users, then also we will not, as they have not done anything right in decades. #googlesucks

It's a Leaflet map, actually, not a Google map.

Well, at least the map at the bottom of the page is - the one at the top is the old map based on Google, which I want to replace with the new one (because #GoogleSucks ).

  6. Google is stealing the whole Internet.

I looked up Project Gutenberg on Google. Clicked on the link. Used the search box to find a book. Used Share to copy the link. And that link...was a Google copy. Here it is, slightly munged because I don't want to give Google the clicks:

    A Shropshire Lad by A. E. Housman | Project Gutenberg https: //share.google/A0nO7OWm4c2uVLgD2

Now mind you, I didn't take this directly FROM Google. I clicked on the Project Gutenberg link from Google, yes. But then I used the search box on Project Gutenberg itself. So this was two clicks in. Nonetheless Google hijacked the link, flat out stole it and replaced it with a "share Google" link.

Google doesn't own Project Gutenberg. Google didn't do any of the work to make the books available on Project Gutenberg. I'm sure Project Gutenberg didn't agree to let Google steal all their links and clicks. Nonetheless, that's what Google is doing.

And I'll be very surprised if they aren't doing that for EVERY OTHER LINK that could be shared from a site that someone finds via Google.

That is barefaced robbery on a global scale.

Who is going to stop them?

By the way, just in case you were wondering: Yes, Project Gutenberg has their own website with their own actual Project Gutenberg links. Here's the link that I was actually •trying• to get:

    gutenberg.org/ebooks/5720

Sneak preview, this is going to be my recommended book of the day. 😜

  7. Okay, what the FUCK is wrong with Android voice dictation? It's just getting shittier and shittier all the time, with huge surges in errors.

Someone needs to start Louigi-ing Big Tech executives.

Or big "check" executives, as Android apparently thinks it should be spelled.

Prediction: Android is going to start onboard-censoring everything we say or write.

#Texas power plant would emit 4.5m tons of carbon dioxide per year, more than that of the entire city of San Francisco

"According to Crusoe’s 465-page permit application, the power plant would emit as much as 4.5m tons of carbon dioxide, a primary driver of climate change, per year. For comparison, the entire city of San Francisco emits about 4m tons of carbon dioxide annually."

The problem is a lot of my older mail is from dead friends. I don't want to give it up. So I'm deleting what I can, and also deleting some photos and videos. I've been backing a lot of the media stuff on various SSDs anyway.

#DHS Hunts Down 67-Year-Old #USCitizen Who Criticized Them in Email

The Department of Homeland Security is using a little-known tool to go after its critics.

    Hafiz Rashid/ February 3, 2026

    "The #Trump administration is targeting #FreeSpeech with a little-known legal tool: #AdministrativeSubpoenas.

"The #WashingtonPost reports that a retired #Philadelphia man, Jon, 67, found himself in the government’s crosshairs after he emailed a lead prosecutor at the Department of Homeland Security, #JosephDernbach, who was handling the deportation case of an #AfghanRefugee, identified as H, asking him to consider that the man’s life was in danger from the #Taliban.

" 'Mr. Dernbach, don’t play Russian roulette with H’s life,' Jon wrote from his #GMail account. 'Err on the side of caution. There’s a reason the US government along with many other governments don’t recognise the Taliban. Apply principles of common sense and decency.'

"Later that day, Jon received an email from #Google notifying him that an administrative subpoena had been sent to them from the Department of Homeland Security 'compelling the release of information related to your Google Account.' Federal agencies can issue such subpoenas without an order from a judge or grand jury, and Google gave Jon, who withheld his last name to protect his family from the government, one week to challenge it.

"Laws are supposed to restrict the use of administrative subpoenas, but DHS has used the tool against dissent protected under the #FirstAmendment to the #Constitution. Jon could not find who in the agency issued the #subpoena, let alone a record of it to show an attorney.

"Days later, DHS agents showed up at Jon’s door. A naturalized U.S. citizen originally from the #UK, Jon was worried about potential violence. The agents showed him a copy of the email and asked to see his side of the story. They didn’t know about the administrative subpoena but said they received orders to interview Jon by #DHS headquarters in Washington, D.C.

"Eventually, the agents agreed that Jon had committed no crimes after he told them he found Dernbach’s email address through a simple Google search. Jon secured pro bono representation by #ACLU attorneys, who argue that the government is violating a statute that limits how administrative subpoenas can be used for '#ImmigrationEnforcement' and that the government targeted Jon for #ProtectedSpeech.

" 'It doesn’t take that much to make people look over their shoulder, to think twice before they speak again,' said Nathan Freed Wessler, one of Jon’s attorneys. 'That’s why these kinds of subpoenas and other actions—the visits—are so pernicious. You don’t have to lock somebody up to make them reticent to make their voice heard. It really doesn’t take much, because the power of the federal government is so overwhelming.'

"Both #Google and #Meta received a record number of subpoenas in the United States during the first half of 2025 as Trump’s second term began, with Google receiving 28,622, a 15 percent increase over the previous six months. Jon was fortunate to have his case picked up by the ACLU and later reported on by a national media outlet. How many others in the U.S. haven’t been so lucky and face legal challenges for exercising their right to free speech?"

  20. AI failure: I asked Google to find me a piece by Frederick Pohl, the science fiction author, about counting in binary. Google's AI promptly informed me that no such piece existed. Maybe I was thinking of some in joke made by science fiction authors about binary numbers, it suggested.

But damn it, even though I read that article about 30 years ago I KNEW it was by Frederick Pohl. So I did some more searching and found it: "How To Count In Binary On Your Fingers" by, sure enough, Frederick Pohl!

Unfortunately I wasn't able to find a copy online that was free to read, but I have a copy of my own.

  21. The new threads feature that Google shoved into Gchat (or whatever the hell they're calling it now) has been wildly successful at making the app annoying. It's basically impossible NOT to accidentally start a thread when chatting with someone.

And then you're off in that thread while the other person thinks you're not responding at all. And you think they're not responding. It brings absolutely nothing good to the experience, and everything bad.

So it's basically got another point where I'm considering alternatives. Can anyone recommend some? I'm looking for something that's not too hard to use, because some of the people I chat with are not exactly technophiles. But it would be nice to have the option to send and receive images, as well as basic formatting options like italics and boldfacing.

I probably don't need to say this, but there's no way in hell I will ever use Facebook Messenger. Never never never. Nor am I interested in anything owned by a billionaire.

Speaking of getting away from Google, this was another day with effectively no YouTube. So that's good.

  25. YouTube boycott update: still going. My internet keeps popping in and out, usually requiring a router reboot. But I'm not missing YouTube either way. I'm bored, yes - but YouTube is just another way to be bored, and I don't need it.

I think I'm working towards some sort of change in my life. Not sure where it's taking me, but at least it will be *somewhere*.

  26. The new threads option that Google added to their chat is ruining chat. I and people I chat with keep accidentally starting a thread, which means that replies to that thread are segregated from the main conversation. So as far as the other person (s) in the chat know, there have been no replies to the main chat.

As far as I can tell, there is no way to merge a thread back into the main conversation. It's just not possible. Likewise, it's not possible to deactivate the threads option. Google has decided we all have to have it, and they've made it incredibly easy to accidentally use.

Congratulations, Google. You have demonstrated an archetypal case of enshittification. You really suck!

  28. A lot of people are resistant to any kind of business uses for the #Fediverse , but consider this:

    - While most of us here are rightfully scornful of #Capitalism , the notion of a "market economy" is not going to go away. There are innumerable small to midsized businesses in the world who _aren't_ like the Capitalists we know and loathe - they haven't established any monopolies, they haven't managed regulatory capture, and they are oppressed by Big Tech just as much as ordinary people are.

    - For many such businesses, maybe even the majority, a #Facebook Business Page is more important than a website, and thus many such small businesses _only_ have a Facebook Business Page, since it is far easier to set up than hosting your own website on your own domain, it is easier for your customers to find you there (because #GoogleSucks ), and it is easier for you to interact with your customers as well.

I think it would be very worthwhile if the Fediverse would develop an alternative to Facebook Business Pages for such businesses.

A good example for an industry that could benefit from such "Fediverse Business Pages" would be the #TTRPG industry. While some gamers might whine that "RPG books cost too much these days!", the reality is that this is an industry that has razor-thin margins, and only the very biggest TTRPG companies have employees that number more than in the single digits. Every business decision they have to make must involve the question:

    "Is this worth the effort?"

Well, if there _was_ a Fediverse Business Page system that was either easy to self-host, or easy to join on larger instances, and which had a similar design to Facebook Business Pages, then there wouldn't be much effort involved in adding the same material to the former if they already maintained the latter. And as #Meta declines, the Fediverse could gradually take its place.

What would such a Fediverse Business Page require? It would need an ActivityPub-enabled feed, of course. It would need a configurable link list that would point towards their product pages or sales platforms, as well as space for all the usual business information. And it would require a robust scheduling system with a calendar view (I used the one provided by Meta for a time, and I think it is possible to do better).

Did I miss any important features?

Oh, and the same system would work well for non-business organizations as well - whether clubs, NGOs, or even political parties!

  29. For some reason my YouTube feed has suddenly filled with a bunch of half-naked women doing things in the snow. Like chopping wood or doing push-ups.

  30. I have maintained for some time that we need a #Fediverse - based alternative to #Quora :

    1. Because #GoogleSucks and the other search engines are likewise increasingly filled up with LLM-based filth.

    2. Quora itself is overrun by Nazis and other crazies.

But we could still use some kind of system where we can ask for information, and receive answers from actual human beings. A federated approach to Quora might work for this need.

  31. As I have mentioned before, I believe that commercial #SocialMedia platforms are a dire threat to the long-term survival of human civilization (see also: #X , #Facebook ), and thus (barring any better alternatives) the #Fediverse needs to grow and replace them.

But there are a bunch of use cases for social media which aren't covered by assorted Fediverse applications yet. Here are the ones I could think of:

    1. A "job networking" site, similar to #LinkedIn. Most of us live in a situation where we have to work for a living, and hunting for prospective job opportunities and business connections is useful. This is where we can post our CVs and talk about our field of business.

    2. A "Question and Answer" site, similar to #Quora. Having some way of people publicly asking questions that can be publicly answered by other people is not a bad idea, especially since #GoogleSucks these days. However, there is no reason why such a site should be overrun by fascist trolls the way Quora is, and Fediverse approaches to moderating instances should help dampen that down.

    3. The equivalent of small business websites with strong social media integration. I know a lot of people are against the idea of any commercial aspects to the Fediverse, but we do live in a late-stage Capitalist hellscape where people need to make a living somehow. And the alternative is leaving this aspect to Facebook, with all of its assorted problems. A _staggering_ number of small businesses around the world, especially but not only in underdeveloped countries, do not otherwise have their own website, but they _do_ have a Facebook business page. And we need something similar for the Fediverse if we want to cater to all of these people.

What other Fediverse use cases can you come up with? #FediHelp
