#OTD 28 September 1890, Alma Mae Happy was born to Alice Serena Weathers and William Wallace Happy of Morgan County, Illinois. They moved to Denver, Colorado, in about 1900. Alma never married and worked as a stenographer and typist. After working briefly for the government in Washington, DC, she returned to Denver to live with her aging parents. Alma was an only child and was buried along with her parents in Crown Hill Cemetery in Denver. They were distant cousins. The surname Happy makes me smile.

Bettie married three times: to Archie Walter Gust, Ernest Lile and Warren Parker. I believe that she had at least one child in each marriage. She and her families have been a challenge to find in the records and to unravel. Sadly, her brief obituary in 2002 did not list her surviving family members.

The first of today's #grandma recordings started with how fast she learned spinning sheep wool from a woman from the village. Then it turned to explaining, that she really considers herself old enough with 97 and by no means wants to become 100. Then she kept explaining, that she really wants to die and not stay in the nursery home another three years.
But we still had some laughs in these talks, like when I said, that of course she has to live until 100, since I can't else brag that my grandma got 100.
Also, when she mentioned that she was glad, she didn't have to wear an oxygen hose on her nose anymore, she said: "What do I need oxygen for, if I want to die?", I couldn't help but laugh at her intonation. She said: "seriously. why do they give me something to prolong it".

#OTD 26 September 1862, A Confederate soldier died near Graysville, Georgia. Private Nicholas J. Allee, about 27, had served only six months in Company K, 2nd Arkansas Infantry. He had purchased 80 acres for $80 in Saline County, Arkansas, in 1860, not long before the Civil War began. In 1872, the claim was questioned. His sister, Caroline Fowler, went to the land office and filed a statement that Nicholas had lived on the land until his death and that she (a widow) had lived there since. They were cousins to my great-great-grandfather.
