E ora la quarta ondata. Gli impatti sulla salute sono numerosi e drammatici: problemi respiratori causati in particolare dalla formazione di ozono (derivante dalle emissioni di ossido di azoto dei motori a combustione interna – a giugno i livelli di ozono hanno superato i limiti di sicurezza per 300 dei 450 milioni di europei); eventi cardiovascolari; malattie infettive; insufficienza renale acuta; inquinamento atmosferico dovuto al fumo degli incendi boschivi. Queste conseguenze aggravano ulteriormente le disuguaglianze sociali legate ad alloggi, trasporti, condizioni di lavoro e reddito. Il numero di decessi in eccesso si conta a migliaia. Le regioni più povere, dove le persone hanno meno mezzi per proteggersi dal caldo e dall'inquinamento, registrano tassi di mortalità in eccesso di quasi l'80%, simili a quelli osservati durante la pandemia di Covid-19. We usually picture climate change as a smooth curve: a little more CO2, a little more heat, step by step, year by year. For large parts of the system this linear picture holds. But there are areas where that linearity breaks. Beyond a certain threshold, a change takes on a life of its own. It then keeps driving itself forward, regardless of whether we keep reinforcing the original cause, and can no longer be reversed on human timescales.

…In terms of mainstream discourse, the “The #IPCC COP process have got this” space dominated until around 2019.
The #energytransition space has caught the imagination for about a decade and is now pretending that there aren’t hard truths to swallow.
The #degrowth space is nothing more than an occasional dalliance for the media. Largely a “Ha ha, look at these weirdos! (but oh shit what if they’re right)” vibe.
And the #lifehouse space is not discussed *at all*

…I’ve been in all 3 fingers-crossed spaces.
I had my fingers crossed for #1 for about 20 years ( COP / #IPCC adjacent ).
I was hopeful for #2 ( #energytransition ) for much of that, until I read beneath the surface propaganda over the last few years.
I’ve been open to #3 ( #degrowth ) since lockdown and still have my fingers crossed for its fingers-crossedness.
