Back to #finland with today's #soda weirdness.

This is Pommac, one of the sodas I definitely make foreign visitors taste when they first come to Finland.

It has berries and fruits in it, what exactly is a mystery. But so is the taste. It's very often offered as a non-alcoholic alternative to bubbly drinks. It's been around since 50s in Finland, originally introduced in Sweden in the 20s, although the original recipe was by a Finnish-Swede.

For lunch today, trying a new-to-me soda: Roxa-Kola! It was originally made in 1906 by G. L. Wainscott, a hyperlocal bottler out of eastern Kentucky, whose family-owned operation is now known as the Ale-8-One Bottling Co. Roxa-Kola, and all of their other non-ginger-ale products, were dropped shortly after the name change in the '60s. This is supposedly a faithful rerelease.

It's a rather standard cola. Bonus points for being Appalachian, but the slogan basically sums it up.

I recently posted about the US version of Fanta Peach, which I like very much, to a degree I declared it's probably my new favorite Fanta flavor.

I found this from the other side of the world: 芬达 水蜜桃味汽水, or Fanta Peach-flavored soda from mainland China.

This seems to be pretty much the same thing, maybe a bit sweeter but still great. I wonder why Europe never got these, we've been stuck with the same orange Fanta with maybe some one shots specials here and there.

Also this can was pretty interesting to examine, as I recently also posted a picture of the Hong Kong market passion fruit - grape fruit Fanta. It had both, English and Mandarin text on it, but this can is purely in Mandarin, save a very small "Coca-Cola Company" copyright hidden next to the bar code.

This is like a train wreck. A huge "SUGAR FREE" jumps out from the label, making me question my life choices for paying 4.70€ for this god awful piece of shit in an amusement park arcade's cafeteria.

It tastes artificial in so many ways. The horrible taste of sweeteners slaps my face like a piss soaked towel. Then comes the super artificial "cola" taste. It makes me wish I had ordered water.

There's absolutely zero redeeming qualities in this. It's an embodiment of everything that's wrong with today's sodas.

I'm fairly sure if I had pissed in a pint later, that would've been better than this.

Ever since Pepsi discontinued 1893, this has been my favorite domestic cola. I used to be able to get it locally no problem, but alas now I only get a few bottles a year.

Strong notes of citrus mixed with a healthy dose of nutmeg and coriander. The added caffeine comes from coffee, which adds another layer. It's fantastic!

Another Fanta from China, this one is for HK area I think, as the label is in western font but the backside is in both, English and Chinese. This is Fanta Passion fruit-grape fruit.

First of all, it sure looks pretty, light pink. It smells of grape fruit mainly, but the taste is a weird combination of both, it starts with a very strong passion fruit and then there's grapefruit too. Thanks to weirdnesses like this I'm such a fan of Asian sodas!

Tonight, a regional favorite: Double Cola! The Double Cola Company is probably better known for their citrus drink, Ski, but I still like their cola. Originally named for coming in a 12oz bottle when Coke only came in 6oz bottles, Double Cola was also the first mainstream soda offered in a 16oz bottle.

It's otherwise a very ordinary cola. Having grown up near a bottler though, it tastes to me of summer camp nostalgia - it's something I get for the memory rather than the flavor.

Today, another Orca 'retro' soda: Nichol Kola! The original was produced in the '30s by H.R. Nicholson, a fruit and vegetable cannery. Apparently it was a big enough hit that Coca-Cola bought the production rights in the '50s and killed it. I have heard this version allegedly still uses kola nuts as a flavoring, although the ingredient listing ('natural flavorings') is too vague to confirm.

It's a good cola, spicy, without the chemically aftertaste of mainstream colas.

Here's AR's 新鮮 ブルーベリー or literally translated Fresh Blueberry.

Despite the strong Japan-vibe, it's actually European product.

It's also not just blueberry, but also blackcurrant, which I had guessed before even looking at the list of ingredients. On the positive sides, it tastes pretty decent, has no bullshit artificial sweeteners in it and the taste comes from actual berries.

It comes in one of these transparent cans and you can see the soda itself is blue and not just the can. The color again is pretty, like someone had put a Smurf in a blender.

The international market in Fairfield also has a really solid domestic glass-bottle soda section. There used to be a good place closer to home, but now I have to make a point to grab my favorites when we're there. Here's one of them: MacFuddy Pepper Elixir!

I normally don't think much of the Orca Beverages 'retro' sodas, but this one is actually really good - it's like a Dr Pepper, but moreso, and with a *strong* black peppery burn.

Now for something a little bit different from the usual beer theme—soda pop! Earlier this spring I received samples of four flavors of Stiller’s Soda, a relatively new line of classic sodas co-founded by actor and comedian Ben Stiller. The selling point of these sodas is “classic soda made right” and highlight classic (or nostalgic) flavors made with organic ingredients and are low calorie.

Today's US import is a new one for me: Fanta Peach.

I think this might be one of the truest Fantas to what it claims to be. It smells of peaches and tastes like them too.

Come to think of it, after many recent disappointments, this might just be the best Fanta I've tasted, period.

In this bad soda taste test I'm watching the host hated a Bazooka bubblegum flavored one which makes me wonder why they didn't just start from a base of red cream or its Scottish cousin Irn Bru which mostly already would describe as tasting bubblegum-y.

I love a red cream soda, I grew up on the Kroger Big K version, and the rare times I've gotten a six pack of Irn Bru online for way too much money they are delicious. They don't taste totally like bubblegum, but they're close enough you could tinker with it some to get close without being cross

For some years, my soda consumption has been almost exclusively sugar free cola of the Finnish MySoda brand.

All of their drink mixes have now been sold out seemingly everywhere for months. They previously stopped selling them on their own website, and there's been no update about availability/production.

I'm not resorting to buying SodaStream products, and the local brand prides itself on using real sugar for everything.

Carbonating squash/cordial at this point. 👀

What is GLASS?

GLASS is tough and often stands guard within a frame,

Like as a window, or fronting a picture,

Or focussing our gaze, when our eyes are not the same.

And I often see through you, unless disguised by your coating,

Of soda, silica, limestone and ‘fancier’ bits, you often say when gloating.

Else creating such strange objects, as if made by a mischievous vandal.

Tonight's #soda is another from the Finnish Laitilan Wirvoitusjuomatehdas: Rio Cola.

While it's obviously a cola drink, it has this almost fruit-like extra taste in it. They make plenty of other good sodas too, this is probably my favorite.

This is 雪碧 冰柠檬酷莓, or Sprite Ice Lemon Coolberry from mainland China. Now that's a mouthful.

It's actually lemon-raspberry Sprite. I was already mentally prepared for a disappointment as with a lot of these Coca-Cola company weird flavors, but this was alright. It's kinda classic Sprite and then there's like a separate aftertaste of the raspberry. So they do know how to make weird editions that don't suck. Or maybe it's just the Asian Coca-Cola company.

Today's #soda is Ting Grapefruit. It's from Jamaica.

We have several alcoholic and non-alcoholic grapefruit drinks, but this is curiously different to the local versions. It says it's made of Caribbean grapefruits, I guess they taste different there. Which will be put to a test at some point.

This is 芬达 菠萝味汽水, or Fanta Pineapple from mainland China.

It's so close to a real deal that I'd almost want to believe this is really pineapple juice, or at least extremely close approximation of it. We have some pineapple sodas here in Finland, but all of them just have this weird artificial taste. This again reminds me of how an actual pineapple tastes and it's not even terribly sweet for a Coca-Cola company product.

What does somebody get to celebrate when they aren't in the mood for alcohol? Sparking rose grape juice, a 12 pack of FULL SUGAR Faygo Rock & Rye rather than any diet shit, and of course a carton of store brand salted caramel ice cream.
