Masonic clothing has changed with the fashions over many decades, but is now deemed to officially be the apron, a collar of office, the Lodge jewel, and gloves. Some American and European Lodges still wear hats - specifically the top hat in some jurisdictions - and some specify a dark suit, black or white tie.
It is, however, the individual who makes a Freemason, and not their clothing.

In 1778 the Grand Lodge of Virginia designed a special jewel for the office of Grand Master to be presented to and worn by George Washington. He, however, declined the office, being in command of the army at this time.
The jewel is now worn by each elected Grand Master.

James Boswell, biographer and erstwhile companion of Samuel Johnson, was elected Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Scotland, 1776-1778.
There is no conclusive proof that this Johnson was a Mason, but a Samuel Johnson was raised to Master Mason on 9 July 1767 in Old Dundee Lodge 18 in Wapping, although this Lodge, constituted in 1723, served mainly mariners and port workers on the Thames.
