James Boswell, biographer and erstwhile companion of Samuel Johnson, was elected Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Scotland, 1776-1778.

There is no conclusive proof that this Johnson was a Mason, but a Samuel Johnson was raised to Master Mason on 9 July 1767 in Old Dundee Lodge 18 in Wapping, although this Lodge, constituted in 1723, served mainly mariners and port workers on the Thames.
