El legado de Roberto Montenegro recuperó una nueva dimensión con la presentación del catálogo Roberto Montenegro. Muralismo fuera de la norma, publicación que amplía la revisión de la trayectoria del artista y su aportación al arte mexicano.
La edición reúne investigaciones y ensayos que revisan su tránsito por el simbolismo, el art déco, el arte popular, el muralismo y distintas representaciones de la masculinidad. El volumen busca acercar estas perspectivas a nuevos públicos y ampliar la comprensión de la diversidad cultural del país.
La publicación acompaña la exposición homónima del Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes (MPBA), integrada por más de 90 piezas y centrada en distintos momentos de la producción de Montenegro, uno de los pioneros del muralismo mexicano.
Una nueva mirada al muralismo
Durante la presentación, Mauricio Maillé, director del MPBA, señaló que el catálogo trasciende el registro de una exposición temporal porque incorpora investigación, análisis y documentación sobre un creador cuya obra abrió distintas rutas dentro del arte mexicano.
La publicación también contribuye a conservar y difundir materiales que permiten estudiar la trayectoria de Montenegro desde perspectivas que rebasan los relatos tradicionales sobre el muralismo. Esa revisión coincide con el propósito de la exposición, que busca recuperar aspectos poco estudiados de su producción.
La muestra revisa particularmente el periodo comprendido entre 1922 y 1934, cuando Montenegro realizó diversos murales en el antiguo convento de San Pedro y San Pablo, entre ellos El árbol de la vida, obra vinculada con los primeros años del muralismo posrevolucionario.
La exposición también recupera el interés del artista por el arte popular mexicano y su participación en iniciativas de promoción cultural, además de aspectos relacionados con su postura humanista frente a conflictos internacionales del siglo XX.
Un artista fuera del canon
La publicación fue coordinada por Daniel Garza Usabiaga, quien participó en un diálogo con la historiadora del arte Susana Vargas y el investigador Ernesto Recendís para abordar las distintas dimensiones del creador jalisciense.
Usabiaga explicó que los textos permiten observar a Montenegro como un artista que trabajó en pintura, dibujo, ilustración, muralismo, diseño y artes decorativas, mientras exploraba relaciones personales, identidades y distintas concepciones de la masculinidad.
Vargas planteó que el catálogo permite acercarse a Montenegro desde sus contradicciones y su sensibilidad, sin reducir su trayectoria a una sola corriente artística. Esa perspectiva cuestiona las clasificaciones rígidas que durante décadas condicionaron la lectura de su obra.
Recendís sostuvo que el volumen ofrece nuevas aproximaciones a la figura del artista y se distancia de los relatos canónicos que han dominado la historia del muralismo mexicano. Su lectura permite identificar resonancias de la obra de Montenegro en debates contemporáneos sobre arte, identidad y representación.
Arte popular y modernidad
El interés de Montenegro no se limitó a la pintura mural. Su trayectoria también incluyó ilustración, escenografía, diseño y promoción del arte popular, facetas que la exposición recupera para ampliar la lectura de su aportación cultural.
La exposición incorpora, además, fragmentos murales preservados mediante la técnica del strappo, procedimiento empleado por especialistas del Centro Nacional de Conservación y Registro del Patrimonio Artístico Mueble (Cencropam) para recuperar obras afectadas por el deterioro de sus espacios originales.
Uno de los casos revisados es Alegoría del viento, fragmento sobreviviente de un conjunto mural realizado entre 1926 y 1928 en el antiguo convento de San Pedro y San Pablo. La pieza permite aproximarse a una parte de la producción de Montenegro que permaneció fuera de los circuitos habituales de exhibición.
La recuperación editorial adquiere así una función que rebasa la documentación de una exposición: reúne investigaciones, imágenes y lecturas que pueden permanecer como referencia para futuros estudios sobre Montenegro y sobre la evolución del arte mexicano.
Un legado que permanece
La colaboración entre el Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes y Fundación Jenkins también forma parte del proyecto editorial. Alejandra Lerdo de Tejada, directora de comunicación de la fundación, señaló que el catálogo permite extender la vida de la exposición más allá de las salas del museo.
De acuerdo con la información difundida por Fundación Jenkins, la alianza editorial con el museo acumula décadas de trabajo y ha permitido publicar catálogos vinculados con exposiciones nacionales e internacionales.
La publicación coloca nuevamente a Montenegro en el centro de una discusión sobre la diversidad del arte mexicano y sobre la necesidad de revisar las narrativas con las que se ha construido la historia del muralismo.
Más que recuperar únicamente el nombre de un muralista, Roberto Montenegro. Muralismo fuera de la norma propone revisar a un creador que transitó entre distintas disciplinas, corrientes y preocupaciones, y cuya obra permite ampliar la manera de comprender la modernidad artística y cultural de México. –sn–
