  1. Having heard about the "mosquito bucket of doom" from several different sources (and having been bitten a gazillion times since moving to moist Maryland from the Arizona desert 3 months ago), I decided to give it a try. I suppose I'll find out in a few weeks how effective it is.

  2. Apparently the ants didn't fancy having their nest excavated and then a ton of concrete poured on it and vibrated in the cracks. So we had a little ant battle in the living room, they were uncorking the big eggs with the winged ants to swarm and try and start new nests and I was murdering and vacuuming them up.

Hopefully we did get them all and they didn't just find a new hideout somewhere and are rebuilding.

Last year there was already tons of ants and this year there's even more. The ones we battled had tiny little placards that read: "you fucked up the planet, its our turn now"

I read somewhere that ants are highly heat resistant and can withstand temperatures of up to 50°C.

    Not yet, ants, not yet.

  4. Alrighty then. Wrapping up #SolarPunkSunday... Next week I'll be posting about #PestControl, #PoisonIvy, #Herbs, #FoodPreservation, and how to turn a #BBQ Grill into a #Smoker, and whatever other topics come up. I may focus on #SolarPunk-related resources in the #UK or #Canada -- just to be cheeky! 😉 Boosting and re-posting some SPS posts from yesterday. Thanks to everyone who used the hashtag and chimed in! As usual, I learned a LOT!

  5. #RatProof your #CompostBin

"Do you have #rats or #mice in your compost bin? Are they feasting on your food scraps and making your compost bin smell? Home compost bins are typically either round or square, and they have an open bottom which means rats and mice can easily burrow in and eat your food waste before it becomes compost.

Wellington City Council have come up with some simple steps to predator proof your compost bin, which we have summarised below.

    What you will need

    - Galvanised wire mesh (holes no bigger than 1.25cm, as mice and baby rats can squeeze through anything bigger) approximately 1.25m x 1.25m square.
    - About 20 plastic cable ties. You could also use wire, but cable ties are faster and easier.
    - Gloves and safety glasses.

If you have a square bin you will also need:

    - Sturdy tin snips or cutting pliers (known as diagonal pliers) ideally with blades set at an angle from the handle, as they keep your hands clear of the mesh while you cut.
    - A drill and drill bit approximately 5mm diameter — check your cable ties can pass through.

    Directions:
Step 1: Lay out the mesh
Step 2: Fold the wire mesh to wrap the compost bin
Step 3: (Square bins only) Cutting wire to fold
Step 4: Cable tie the mesh to the compost bin."

  6. 🐿️ 🪣 ☠️ Count
    ______________
    Day 2: 2 (so far)
    Total: 4

I love the stupid chipmunks. They invaded my rock garden (!) including burrows in planters and in a few plant spots, side yard (which is now partially collapsing), under my deck, and far back yard.

They crossed from being "Aww, chippies!" into "SLAY! CHIPPIES! ⚔️ "

I am now Xena Warrior Princess, but pest control. 😔 Hate it x1,000.

  8. New #gardening video up! Read the script on my blog or watch me on YouTube for a chance of seeing Mr. Freddy "the kitty" Mercury, or just listen to it, visuals aren't necessary.

BTW, I'm looking to get into doing research for podcasts, and this article was written with this in mind, if you need a researcher and would like to see a sample. Don't worry if it's not a gardening #podcast I have wide interests.
