  1. Over the past year, the #LifeCycles team has been taking a deep dive into reimagining what the #SeedLibrary can be. With the help of many dedicated volunteers, we’ve spent significant time sorting and organizing seeds, and we’re excited to share what’s coming next.

By the end of February, #seed #donation bins will be launched at each of #GreaterVictoriaPublicLibrary branches. The Seed Library at the Broughton branch in downtown Victoria, which will both collect and distribute seeds, is expected to be fully functional by March.

We are also shifting how #seeds are accessed at the #library to make them more #accessible and increase their reach. The Seed Library will function more like a Seed Box - prioritizing ease of access, because we believe that access to seeds—especially amid rising food costs—is an important part of local #foodsecurity.

Alongside this, we are planning to continue the Seed Library’s core work of growing out heirloom and locally adapted varieties so they remain accessible in our region. As these seeds become available, we will put these seeds into rotation in the Broughton Branch Seed Library.

We’re also planning two #SeedWorkshops this year — a beginner workshop in the spring and a more advanced workshop in the summer. More details coming soon!

#Volunteer opportunities - come help us!

We have two remaining seed-sorting shifts and we would love your help:

    Monday, January 19, 10:00 am–12:00 pm

    Monday, January 26, 1:00–3:00 pm

Shifts take place at our Esquimalt office (808 Viewfield Rd, Unit A). Snacks are provided! You can sign up through the Gleaning Hub under Join → Shifts

  2. When Mom takes her 2 hours afternoon nap, I'm going to ride out on my mobility scooter to distribute 100 #BoycottIsraeliApartheid stickers & #StopGenocideInGaza info leaflets. I have 500 of each to distribute, locally. I'm aiming for distribution of 100/week until they're all given out to locals around #Saanich #VictoriaBC #Esquimalt #ViewRoyal #Vicwest #Colwood #Langford areas.

Please take some sort of actions to support #PalestineSolidarity ✊️❤️🍉🇵🇸🍉❤️
Everyone can do something to show your solidarity support for #Palestinians suffering starvation #genocide under occupying #Zionazis.

  3. We partnered with #SpinnakersBrewPub to create a Backyard Blend Hard Apple Cider. Part of our value added products collaborations with local businesses from local #gleaned #RescuedFruits. This is from the last time #LifecyclesProjectSociety collaborated with Spinnakers to create an #alcoholic backyard blend #cider. This is no longer available at Spinnakers. You may be able to still find this Backyard Blend in other BC stores. They sell another blend that is in cans - using fruits we've gleaned from all around the community.
We are working on creating a new hard cider blend, with Spinnakers.

These value added products & collaborations with local businesses helps our #nonprofit to stay afloat. We depend on public & private grants, public donations, a huge team of volunteers & collaborations with small local businesses to keep running to help cultivate communities & keep on contributing to local food security.

Beau & I are heading out to meet Tyler soon to build fire, butterfly & mount the salmon & other related preparation work.

It's a gorgeous day in Esquimalt & #Songhees territories. Sunny & warm morning!

  6. #VictoriaBC #Saanich #ViewRoyal #Esquimalt #YYJ - Happening today!

Keep the #Halloween spirit going in our neighbourhood with a #community #PumpkinParade!

Bring your carved #JackOLanterns down to #GorgePark between 3-5pm on November 1st, then return from 6-8pm to see them all lit up together as you take a spooky stroll! There is no limit to the number of #pumpkins you can bring down - the more, the merrier!

***If you're unable to bring your pumpkin down to the park and live in the #GorgeTillicum area, please put your pumpkins at the end of your driveway by 1pm and we will attempt to pick them up.***

The event will be held in Gorge Park adjacent to the parking lot opposite Orillia Street. Entertainment will run from 6pm - 7:30pm and there will be free hot chocolate and treats for the community.

This year, your pumpkins will get a third chance to entertain as they'll be delivered to the Tillicum Centre Pumpkin Smash the following day! Saanich Firefighters will be dropping the pumpkins from atop fire ladder before they go to compost station.

  7. We will be showing all of our ribbon skirts, along with past ribbon skirt workshop participants, at the joint #TruthAndReconciliation special evening event, co-hosted by #SNIWWOC & #KWENCH on September 30th.

    Event Info:

SNIWWOC will be hosting our annual Truth and Reconciliation event at KWENCH bringing #community members together for an evening of #education, #togetherness, and #remembrance for Truth and Reconciliation in #VictoriaBC on September 30th 2024, 5:30-7:30pm PST.

#JoinUs to learn about the sacred #Indigenous practice of #RibbonSkirt making and the significance it holds within the Indigenous community. You will have the unique opportunity to view these beautiful skirts made by BC Indigenous/Indigenous BIPOC individuals, and learn about the importance of continuing these traditions.

You will also have the privilege to #WitnessTestimony from #ResidentialSchoolSurvivors, the ones who did not make it as well as for honoring all #IndigenousCommunities.

Truth and Reconciliation, also known as #OrangeShirtDay, is a reminder of what was done in #Canadian history that impacted the #IndigenousPeople, and continues to impact generations of Indigenous communities. On this day we highlight how the conversation needs to be continued as a step for #healing and #reconciliation.

SNIWWOC would like to take this time and day to #honor the people and their #culture that was lost. You will hear from a variety of #IndigenousSpeakers, #CommunityElders, and be witness to #SacredKnowledge, in the #SafeSpace that we will hold for all that would like to be part of this experience.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone, celebrating and giving a voice for those who could not. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided!

  10. Despite #BCNDP saying they’ve stopped #renovictions in #BritishColumbia they’re still very much happening. After a ruling from the Residential Tenancy Branch #RTB dozens of #Esquimalt #seniors are being kicked out in four months for the new owners to do renovations.

Many of the #renters being displaced are #LowIncome, either on #disability or a #FixedPension. As a result, most of them can’t afford market rent, and fear they could be homeless.

Because the new owner is doing renovations, not a total demolition, Esquimalt’s #Tenant Assistance Policy isn’t triggered. Any stronger policy is the #BCgovernment jurisdiction.

“It’s time for the provincial government to actually stop this from happening. If they really want to stop renovictions, then they need to change the laws,” said Douglas King, executive director of #TogetherAgainstPovertySociety.

King says what’s needed is a BC-wide #TenantAssistance #policy to better #ProtectTenants facing #displacement, but also to prevent #taxpayers from paying for the consequences down the line.
