  1. A proposed development for a private property on Admirals Road will result in the removal of 33 #GarryOak trees. The #Esquimalt #Climate Organizers have started a petition to prevent this from happening.

This petition asks the #EsquimaltCouncil to deny the current #development permit for the property and require it to be redesigned to allow for the #preservation of the Garry Oak and #DouglasFir #ecosystem. The removal of these #trees would have a large negative impact on #habitat and hydrology for the community, and will require 66 #replacement trees elsewhere as per Esquimalt’s #TreeProtection bylaw.

  6. Over the past year, the #LifeCycles team has been taking a deep dive into reimagining what the #SeedLibrary can be. With the help of many dedicated volunteers, we’ve spent significant time sorting and organizing seeds, and we’re excited to share what’s coming next.

By the end of February, #seed #donation bins will be launched at each of #GreaterVictoriaPublicLibrary branches. The Seed Library at the Broughton branch in downtown Victoria, which will both collect and distribute seeds, is expected to be fully functional by March.

We are also shifting how #seeds are accessed at the #library to make them more #accessible and increase their reach. The Seed Library will function more like a Seed Box - prioritizing ease of access, because we believe that access to seeds—especially amid rising food costs—is an important part of local #foodsecurity.

Alongside this, we are planning to continue the Seed Library’s core work of growing out heirloom and locally adapted varieties so they remain accessible in our region. As these seeds become available, we will put these seeds into rotation in the Broughton Branch Seed Library.

We’re also planning two #SeedWorkshops this year — a beginner workshop in the spring and a more advanced workshop in the summer. More details coming soon!

#Volunteer opportunities - come help us!

We have two remaining seed-sorting shifts and we would love your help:

    Monday, January 19, 10:00 am–12:00 pm

    Monday, January 26, 1:00–3:00 pm

Shifts take place at our Esquimalt office (808 Viewfield Rd, Unit A). Snacks are provided! You can sign up through the Gleaning Hub under Join → Shifts

  7. We partnered with #SpinnakersBrewPub to create a Backyard Blend Hard Apple Cider. Part of our value added products collaborations with local businesses from local #gleaned #RescuedFruits. This is from the last time #LifecyclesProjectSociety collaborated with Spinnakers to create an #alcoholic backyard blend #cider. This is no longer available at Spinnakers. You may be able to still find this Backyard Blend in other BC stores. They sell another blend that is in cans - using fruits we've gleaned from all around the community.
We are working on creating a new hard cider blend, with Spinnakers.

These value added products & collaborations with local businesses helps our #nonprofit to stay afloat. We depend on public & private grants, public donations, a huge team of volunteers & collaborations with small local businesses to keep running to help cultivate communities & keep on contributing to local food security.

  12. *I'm awaiting to hear back on which crew I'll be placed with for upcoming Not a Whaler #sailing event.*

The annual Canadian Forces Sailing Association’s #CFSA Not A Whaler Race is taking place on January 1, 2025 at the Canadian Forces Base #Naden, #Esquimalt Harbour. #Sailors will gather at the Sail Training dock.  Boats pay $20.00 and each crew member wanting post race food and drink (chili including vegetarian and alcoholic and non-alcoholic Moose Milk (a Navy tradition) will pay $10.00. We invite our ASV members to join in the post race celebrations or perhaps on a boat as we do have skippers happy to take folks out, however, you will need to be able to negotiate getting in and out of boats without a lift and up and down companion ways of boats. If you are interested in being a crew member on a boat for $10.00 you will need to provide your name and contact beforehand so we can place you on a suitable vessel. You will need to arrive at the docks at 1200. The race itself commences at 1:30 pm for about 1-1.5 hours with boats returning to the docks for the apres sail festivities. You can join in the apres sailing festivities and enjoy chili and libations for $10.00 but please RSVP to [email protected] for either crewing or eating.

CFSA has a long history of supporting accessible sailing in Victoria as it was the program provider since #DisabledSailing came into being in the early 1990’s. CFSA supported the association with space, moorage and assistance with equipment, volunteers and training staff.

Currently CFSA has had to change the location of their marina resulting in the dock not being accessible until the marina development is completed. Despite not being able to host the sails for the former Disabled Sailing Association (now #AbleSailVictoria (ASV), CFSA has continued to support the programs by #fundraising with the Not A Whaler Race and providing storage space for the program’s equipment during the off season.

If you or your family or friends would to make a donation to Able Sail Victoria you can do so directly: canadahelps.org/en/dn/103503

This will help us to continue our successful programs for which we charge $20.00 while the cost to provide the program is $130.00 per sail. We thank you for being members of ASV and for providing support for this worthwhile program.
