  1. In #Maine #prisons, #NativeAmerican #SweatLodges are part of the program

A #Passamaquoddy elder has led over 100 sweats for inmates since 2007.

    Reuben M. Schafir
    November 6, 2025

"Since inmates won the right to hold sweat ceremonies, #BrianAltavater has traveled from his Down East home on the #PassamaquoddyReservation at #Sipayik ( #PleasantPoint ) to facilitate them. He is a pipe carrier and a sweat lodge keeper — designations, he explained, that are chosen by the ancestors.

" 'I don’t deserve to be a pipe carrier and do this sort of work,' he told his teacher, David Gehue of Sipekne’katik, Nova Scotia, when Gehue noticed his potential.
'Desert’s got nothing to do with it,” Gehue, himself a respected spiritual leader, said. 'Once the ancestors pick you, you don’t have a choice.'

" 'Let me think about it,' Altvater said.
    That was several decades ago.
Altvater has held 108 sweat lodge ceremonies in Maine prisons since 2007, and in 2020 was hired by the nonprofit #WabanakiREACH (restoration, engagement, advocacy, change and healing) to continue the work.
This work is less an occupation for Altvater and more a way of life.

" 'You can start with a clean slate from today and move on to the rest of your life and learn from the mistakes that you made so you don’t repeat ‘em,” he said. "

  2. #MaineCare will cover traditional #Wabanaki healing practices

#Maine will be the 1st eastern state and 6th in the nation to cover #Indigenous healing methods through Medicaid.

Excerpt: "Over the next year, leaders from healthcare providers will work with state Medicaid officials to determine exactly what practices will be covered by Medicaid, and how much clinics will be reimbursed for them.

"Tribal #knowledgekeepers have continued to use ceremonies to heal members of their communities even without a mechanism of government financial support, leaders emphasize. And they always will. Although there’s never a charge for those ceremonies, they do consume resources.

" 'Rather than having them adapt their cultural practices to our systems, we need to adapt our systems to their cultural practices,' Pladsen said.

"It is an odd moment, #LisaSockabasin acknowledged, in which traditional practices that are typically shared relationally within communities are to be assigned a dollar value.

"But it’s also an opportunity for collaboration and for mutual growth, she said.

" 'We’re becoming more aware, both #Indigenous and #NonIndigenous people, on what it takes to heal. We are both learning.' "

  4. Meet the #IndigenousWomen restoring #Kenya’ s #MauForest — and reshaping gender roles

    Exceprt: "Restoring forests, rebuilding livelihoods

For Nancy Letina, chairperson of Namaiyana Women’s Group within the Paran network, joining the collective in 2021 transformed not only how she viewed conservation but also her family’s economic future.

" 'Previously, as #Maasai women, we depended on our husbands for everything, even household items like salt,' Letina said. But in 2019, that changed after her husband died, leaving her as the breadwinner with the responsibility to provide for her four children.

"The first two years after losing her husband were difficult. Together with a handful of women facing similar hardships from Olomaiayana-Iltirben village in Melelo ward, Letina formed a self-help group that supported members during times of need. Their fortunes began to change when the group joined Paran and received training in #sustainable livelihood activities.

" 'We gained knowledge that showed us that every woman can also fend for herself. Today, women have their own income. We can pay school fee arrears when our children are sent home and respond to emergencies without waiting for assistance.'

"Her group currently manages a 0.2-hectare (half-acre) #TreeNursery where they grow indigenous species such as the African olive (Olea europaea subsp. africana), valued in forest restoration for supporting #biodiversity and also widely used in traditional medicine, which they periodically supply to Paran. Letina’s group has sold 10,600 indigenous tree seedlings to the organization since joining. One seedling goes for 20 shillings ($0.15). The proceeds support both members and group activities."

  5. #IndigenousGardens in #Ontario

" #Indigenous gardens and other special places are designed for people to gather, learn, heal, reflect and celebrate the diverse and rich #FirstNations, #Inuit and #Métis cultures.

"From the banks of the St. Marys River in #SaultSainteMarie and #LakeSuperior in #ThunderBay to downtown #Toronto, learn about the important role of Indigenous gardens in honouring #IndigenousCulture and knowledge in Ontario.

"Traditional plants, including the four sacred medicines — #sage, #tobacco, #cedar and #sweetgrass — are often integral to Indigenous gardens.

    - Sage is often used in smudging, where the smoke is washed over participants to cleanse away negative energy.
    - Cedar is a protective medicine that can be used as cedar tea, cedar baths or hung in the home to guard against bad elements.
    - Sweetgrass is a kindness medicine. It reminds us to be good to others, the world and ourselves.
    - Tobacco is a relationship medicine offered to start things: before a harvest, before a hunt, before asking for assistance from an Elder or to start the day. It opens up communication and ushers in good energy.

There are similarities - internal conflicts, factual inaccuracies, obliviousness to implications and logic.

The observed differences - Wikipedia (generally) avoids; the faked "thoroughness" of genAI, the swapping of subject and object in a paragraph, & the creation of fake references and fake quotations.

  8. Heh. #Seaweed goes mainstream!

I Tried Seaweed Therapy for My #Psoriasis — Here’s How It Went

    Managing Psoriasis

    December 07, 2022

"Bathing in seaweed has long been a practice in Ireland. However, a recent surge in its popularity has led to bath houses springing up across the country. At these locations, which vary from serene indoor spas to scenic waterside locations featuring outdoor barrels filled with seaweed and warm water, you can soak in your own seaweed bath.

"When hot water is poured over it, seaweed releases oils and gels that are rich in minerals and vitamins with a myriad of health benefits. Proponents claim it can help soothe aching muscles, remove toxins from the body, and relieve irritation by deeply moisturizing and hydrating the skin. This accelerates the rate at which damaged skin cells are repaired and increases circulation.

"Fucus serratus, also known as serrated wrack or bladder wrack, is the type of seaweed most commonly used in seaweed baths because it contains the largest amount of oils and gels. The warm temperature of the water opens your pores, which allows you to absorb the oils and gels on a deeper level."
