Fertile fir, for Friday.
The huge Douglas fir tree in our backyard is loaded with seed cones. You can't see from these pics but in person, you can see that many of the cones are glistening with sap drippings.

I got this book for free 😃 It's an incredible, fully illustrated, children's book about an old growth tree in an ancient forest & the wildlife, flora & mycelium, which all support each other in the ecosystem.

A Tree in the Ancient Forest by Carol Reed Jones & illustrated with drawings by Christopher Canyon.

A really wonderful, educational book that all ages would enjoy & appreciate. This was a fabulous #FreeBook score 💚 It doesn't fit inside my little free library so I'm gifting it to a nearby community center's children's library 😊

4 years ago, I first met this gentle giant.
It's one of the only older Western red #cedar #trees left at #W̱MÍYEŦEN #NatureSanctuary. Most of the land had been logged more than once before it was acquired for conservation & rewilding. This is a 2nd growth cedar & it is over 150 yrs old.

The W̱MÍYEŦEN #Nature Sanctuary is a 42 acre protected forest and riparian area ​that supports biodiversity while preserving ecosystems and wildlife habitat. The tranquil natural environment, inspires an awareness of nature as teacher and essential ally.

I'm a member of this local, biodiverse nature sanctuary. They mainly rely on memberships & public donations. They work with #Indigenous leaders/educators/naturalists from #Wsanec First Nations. The name was changed from the former Mary Lake Sanctuary to W̱MÍYEŦEN Nature Sanctuary to respect that the property is on native lands.

We fought hard to save the ancient trees & their life-sustaining wild ecosystems, to get Avatar Grove area protected & turned into a public park. It was previously on the corporate deforestation list prior to the hard grassroots fight to save this area of Port Renfrew, where old growth forests were rapidly dwindling due to colonial capitalist style of short-term greedy gains & putting nature last. Nature should be first.
