To avoid having all of our research eggs in one basket, we are migrating all of our data from #ancestry to #grampsweb. So far, so good. Wish us luck.

To celebrate "Ancestor Appreciation Day"; I found this old photo in my mom's things of my great grandparents, Annie and Lee. I never met them, but my grandma would often talk about them.

I've also included the cover of my grandma's book that nicely displays she and her siblings.

Late 90s. Me & Mom inside the trunk of a huge old growth cedar tree, in Gold River.
My parents & I took our first North Island nature adventures road trip to Gold River. I was able to show them the incredible natural beauty that surrounds the Nootka Sound area. I took them caving for their first time. The Gold River area on the island is very popular with local & international splelunkers because it has a fab network of caves.

This picture is of a posh annex to a smart hotel in Oundle near Peterborough. I am willing to bet it did not look that good in 1841.
That's when my GGGGrandmother, Elizabeth BERRIDGE, lived there with her husband Richard BIRD and at least three of their children, inculding Emma BIRD.
Emma, my GGGGrandmother, was born before the General Register Office and birth certificates started in 1837. She does not appear in the parish registers. Her parents may have been too poor to pay for a baptism.
Her sister, Martha was born in 1843 and that is how I was able to find Elizabeth's maiden name and her marriage, from Martha's Birth Certificate.

❓#QuestionOfTheWeek What historical rivalry appears in your family tree? 🌹

https://youtube.com/shorts/S1JmcvKXdro

The red rose and the white spent thirty years tearing England apart, and when it was finally over, the two houses were joined by a marriage — because that's how these things usually end. The people on opposing sides of a great historical conflict are almost always related, and often closely.

Genealogy has a way of surfacing these. You trace two lines back far enough and discover they were shooting at each other, or suing each other, or refusing to sit on the same side of a church. Sometimes the documentation is a court record. Sometimes it's a single sentence in an obituary. Sometimes it's just the strange fact that a family stopped naming children after a particular grandparent.

What rivalry, feud, or ancestral falling-out turns up in your tree — and did anyone ever bury the hatchet?

❓#QuestionOfTheWeek Any twins in your family tree? 👯

Do you have twins — or multiple sets — in your family tree? What stories have you discovered about them?

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/V0AeTCDxhuo

Twins turn up in the records in all sorts of ways: paired baptism entries, shared birthdays that look like transcription errors, siblings who lived parallel lives half a world apart. Sometimes they're the reason a family line finally makes sense.

Tell us what you've found.

@abcfeeds as a person who has been doing #familytree research for 18 years and a #dna user there are a couple of things people should know:
1. Family tree research is fun if you already have a good idea about what you are.
2. DNA testing is bad if you haven’t done 1. I’ve heard some sad stories here from my own relatives. When i got my results and my parents i think i was relieved it was what i always assumed. 4 siblings and middle child odds were good but imagine if you don’t have these odds.

This week, WikiTree's G2G community is celebrating Mothers Week by inviting genealogists and family historians to share the stories of the mothers in their trees.

Every family tree is shaped by the women whose names are sometimes the hardest to find in the historical record. This is a chance to honor them — and to connect with a global community of researchers who understand just how meaningful that work is.

🧩 This Week's #ConnectionCheckers is Egg-cellent! 🥚
WikiTree's weekly Connection Checkers game is a unique exercise in collaborative genealogy — and this week's theme is perfectly timed for Easter! Participants explore their place on the WikiTree Big Tree by finding and verifying their connections to a curated set of notable profiles, this week featuring Gregg Allman, Peggy Lee, King Ecgberht, and nine others with egg-inspired names.
It's more than a game — it's a community-driven effort to verify and strengthen the connections in one of the world's largest collaborative family trees. Three standout contributors earn a spot in the Connection Checkers Hall of Fame each week, recognized for shortest path, longest path, and most verified steps — including helping fellow players.
New to WikiTree or Connection Checkers? You're welcome to jump in at any level. Post a connection you'd like to explore, and the community will support you from there.
Game runs through April 7. 🌳🧬
