  1. “Cotswolds Forest Clearing” — A break in the trees lets sunshine into a clearing in a Cotswolds forest.

During spring the woodlands and fields and pastures of the Cotswolds are very bright and green… if it isn’t raining. Of course, it is the rain produces all of that green. We had our share of sunny days, but we also experienced the rain — generally light and transitory, but a bit more substantial on the final day of our weeklong walk. This scene was midway through the walk, where the path crossed green hill, the trees opened up a bit, and the sun shone in.

  2. “A Cotswolds Trail” — Two Cotswolds hikers pause in the sunlight between old trees and a wheat field.

I have to confess some (OK, a lot of) ignorance about England outside of its cities. We’ve been to the country a number of times, but that usually means going to London and then visiting a few other relatively urbanized places. So “my England” has been basically London and a few (mostly popular) towns. We’ve passed through the country on trains and looked down on it from the air, but this trip was the first time that we actually went out and walked through it. I learned a lot!

  3. “Four Cotswolds Trees” — Large old trees stand in a Cotswolds field.

Near the end of May we did a one-week walk in England’s Cotswolds. Ours was not the most aggressive walk, and our mileage was shorter than it might have been on more aggressive walks. (Basically, we did an out-and-back loop starting and ending at Moreton-in-Marsh.) The plan was to enjoy the walking, but have plenty of time and energy to enjoy the towns we passed through and stayed in each night.

  4. “Cotswolds Forest Scene” — Trees and spring undergrowth along a Cotswolds trail.

This spring, following our exploration of northwest Scotland and cities in Ireland, we made our way to the Cotswolds District of England, where we did a one week village-to-village walk. It was unusually hot on the day we arrived, but once we started walking the weather was more typically British, as in cloudy and rainy. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The cool, damp weather was generally great for walking, and most of the rain came in the form of brief, light showers. With that in mind, it is no surprise that we spent a lot of time in some very green landscapes.

  6. I remember designer Mary Keen at a Snowdrop Study day where we were both speakers saying that among the best snowdrops for naturalising are ordinary Galanthus nivalis. She's right! These are from just a handful of bulbs and this is just part of the display along our drive, They've even 'hopped' over to the other side. A real mood-lifter in these gloomy days - both the weather and the news.
