The summer's drought has meant dividing plants into survivors and sacrifices as it wasn't possible to keep everything watered. You can read about some difficult decisions on the blog: https://thechattygardener.com/plants-and-more/drought-survivors-sacrifices/

“Cotswolds Forest Clearing” — A break in the trees lets sunshine into a clearing in a Cotswolds forest.
During spring the woodlands and fields and pastures of the Cotswolds are very bright and green… if it isn’t raining. Of course, it is the rain produces all of that green. We had our share of sunny days, but we also experienced the rain — generally light and transitory, but a bit more substantial on the final day of our weeklong walk. This scene was midway through the walk, where the path crossed green hill, the trees opened up a bit, and the sun shone in.

“A Cotswolds Trail” — Two Cotswolds hikers pause in the sunlight between old trees and a wheat field.
I have to confess some (OK, a lot of) ignorance about England outside of its cities. We’ve been to the country a number of times, but that usually means going to London and then visiting a few other relatively urbanized places. So “my England” has been basically London and a few (mostly popular) towns. We’ve passed through the country on trains and looked down on it from the air, but this trip was the first time that we actually went out and walked through it. I learned a lot!

“Four Cotswolds Trees” — Large old trees stand in a Cotswolds field.
Near the end of May we did a one-week walk in England’s Cotswolds. Ours was not the most aggressive walk, and our mileage was shorter than it might have been on more aggressive walks. (Basically, we did an out-and-back loop starting and ending at Moreton-in-Marsh.) The plan was to enjoy the walking, but have plenty of time and energy to enjoy the towns we passed through and stayed in each night.

“Cotswolds Forest Scene” — Trees and spring undergrowth along a Cotswolds trail.
This spring, following our exploration of northwest Scotland and cities in Ireland, we made our way to the Cotswolds District of England, where we did a one week village-to-village walk. It was unusually hot on the day we arrived, but once we started walking the weather was more typically British, as in cloudy and rainy. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The cool, damp weather was generally great for walking, and most of the rain came in the form of brief, light showers. With that in mind, it is no surprise that we spent a lot of time in some very green landscapes.

“Cotswold Trail, Clouds” — Clouds build above a trail through agricultural land in the Cotswolds.
For a hiker like me, with a lifetime of wilderness hiking and backpacking behind him, a “Cotswolds walk” is a new and different experience. I am used to single-person-width trails, usually rocky, and sometimes ascending to quite high elevations. On multi-day trips I have carried everything on my back. But here the trails are gentle, often passing between and through fields and pastures. And you carry only a few supplies for the day’s walk — you simply stop at a grocery or a pub in a small town at lunch time and buy something to eat…more: https://gdanmitchell.com/2026/08/03/cotswold-trail-clouds/

Seeing how the small villages of the Cotswolds have ruined their inherent pre-automobile design with busy highway-like roads through the middle of town, creating pedestrian barriers, noise, and general unpleasantness, is really sad.
Seeing posters for "visit the Cotswolds without a car" seems like such an obvious lie.

“Wheat Field and Building Clouds” — Thunderheads rise above a Cotswolds wheat field.
If you are following along, it may start to be difficult to follow the itinerary of our late-spring trip to the British Isles. We started in Scotland, spent time in Ireland, then headed to England for about three weeks. The first week in England was spent on a walk between villages in the Cotswolds. We had heard about people doing that, and it sounded fun — and we were able to meet up with relatives who live in Europe…more: https://gdanmitchell.com/2026/07/15/wheat-field-and-building-clouds/
