#Ficus experiment.

The tree is a Ficus Obliqua, one of a bunch I started from seed in 2022. It had eighteen siblings once, but the lankier or bigger leafed ones I gave away and I'm down to three now.

It was in a two gallon-ish flower pot until last month. Now that I find myself in a place with a large window and a balcony, it's been de-potted to give it room to grow.

The tray underneath is filled with expanded clay and baby watercress. The mound is seeded with mini-clover and alpine wild strawberries. I didn't have quite enough clover seed to get good coverage on the first pass, so had to give the bald spots a second rub-down once the first batch was established.

The mound consists of a base "pillow" of burlap stuffed and stitched with planting mix, a burlap pot containing the transplanted tree stitched tight to that, and then more soil mix and a wrap around all of that, stitched top and bottom to the other bags.

The mix is 50/50 orchid potting mix (bark, chunky perlite, some charcoal) and potting soil.

It looks like the clover will handle the vertical sides, and I'm sure the strawberries will if any are actually hiding in there somewhere.

As an unexpected (bonus?), it's now growing mushrooms. I *think* they're "Shaggy Ink Cap", and I'll take it as a sign that a healthy soil ecosystem is getting established in my little hill. Once the clover and (hopefully) strawberries are established enough, I won't need to keep the mound nearly as moist so the 'shrooms should calm down I expect.

My first time growing #watercress -- I'll be using more on the deck under plants so I won't be raining on the downstairs neighbor all summer.

#WeeklyPlant Week 31

There’s an hashtag going over on Mastodon where each week, from Monday to Sunday, people share a plant photo tagged with #WeeklyPlant. You don’t need a garden, nor an house plant to participate. Saw a weed on a wall on your way to work? Share a photo with the hashtag and the number of the week and you’re in. You also don’t need to talk about the plant, just the photo will suffice. But if you want to use this as an excuse to learn something new every week, go ahead.

I’m starting with this schlumbergera, also known as Christmas Cactus, because they flower around then. But don’t get fooled, unlike cacti, they like humidity (perfect for bathrooms), and don’t do well with strong sunlight, nor very high temperatures. In Autumn (Europe), in the months before flowering season, you can move them to a cooler and more darker place to stimulate buds formation. When they appear, you can move it back to its original place.

If you want to propagate it, choose three leaves in Y form and pinch them at the arrow in the photo. Taking these cuts in the Spring will also encourage the plant to get more stems and thus more flowers.

Leave it for a day or two so it dries a little bit and then plant it, pushing the bottom into no more than 1 cm in a well draining small pot with compost. Once the roots are formed, you can move it to another vase.

When this first began growing I thought it was a flower bud, but no, it's a keiki! I divided this plant and repotted it, guess that stressed it enough to make more plants.

Looking at a flowering #christmasCactus and suddenly thought, how have I been seeing xmas cacti my whole life but I've never seen any fruit? I guess they just rarely get fertilized in a home environment?

Here's a Reddit pic of a fruit from a duck-search. They look pretty cool, I think I'll try the paint-brush technique and see what happens.

Just now noticed that my Amorphophallus atroviridis (pictured), an aroid endemic to Thailand, is producing a new shoot after months of dormancy, during which it was accompanied by a spider (also pictured). The pot's now been placed back on the windowsill, where the spider continues to keep a watchful eye to ensure a successful year of growth. Many thanks, comrade arachnid.

My upstairs office is filled with the scent of chocolate covered cherries... my Hoya carnosa "Krinkle 8" is blooming again, and its fragrance is delicious! More intense in the evenings, because hoya blooms are pollinated by nocturnal moths.

I potted this krinkle8 from two cuttings about 18 months ago. It has grown. Each thick green leaf has two rows of dimples, often 8 of them hence the common name. Those pompom blooms! 🙌
