  12. While I was out yesterday, they moved in! Currently bringing in pollen and nectar at a quick rate (probably a lot of it from the clover in the yard). I'm letting them settle down a bit, given the winds, storms, and temp. I didn't want to disturb them, even tho I'm very curious about their health and genetics!

I was able to grab a pic while standing on a ladder. Didn't have any gear on since it was just a quick shot, but they seem chill. Time will tell!

  17. I was just informed the farmer adjacent to my bee yard planted 10 acres of sunflowers a week ago. A major plus for the HarpHives Apiary! Sunflowers bloom late in the summer and it's pollen is a natural medicine to bees that can treat gut issues. Apparently the honey is tasty too but that's about third or fourth on my list of pros, the overwintering aspects is what I care most about. Sunflowers will provided great nourishment for the bees.

  22. The new apiary is getting full. I had to pull the bait hive down that I had just put back up to take 4 frames out of but I only had 9 total so I had to glue up 5 frames then I reset the bait hive and added the 10th to the deep box and closed it up with a jar of food this evening. It's all on bare foundation freshly waxed. I kept two drawn frames in the bait hive to increase the chance of catching another swarm I don't need.

  23. Hello everyone. How's it going? Business as usual here though after work tonight I have a two hour beekeeping class. All book learning basically but I like to have all the knowledge on a subject I can so the $85 for (4) two hour classes seemed fair. Each class covers a different topic at the various steps of the season. Hopefully these thunderstorms here stop before I'm heading out.

Have a great rest of your afternoon!

  24. I'm pretty sure a bee swarm is inbound to one of my swarm boxes! Exciting! What I'm not sure of is their arrival - this evening or tomorrow sometime?

Swarm season has arrived in Indiana, I think.

  25. I had some really good news in the apiary today. One of my nucs balled (killed) their queen in the 1st week and create 9 queen cells. I culled 7 and crossed my fingers, hoping for the best. Part of my goal in being self sustainable is letting strong colonies raise their own queens. These guys stung me 4 times the first day, they're pretty scrappy.

Today I found a lovely set of eggs and larvae, so they were very successful! I've been stressing out for weeks.

  30. I did do some #beekeeping. Moved the swarm into the nuc, cut off a flower for my mom while it was cold and wet and probably without ants, had dinner, moved #6 egg chick into the brooder, had some strawberries on velvet poundcake, took a frame of brood out of a hive in case the nuc doesn't have a queen which it seemed like and if it does there's like 5 queen cells ready to hatch that she can fight on that 1 frame, made some bee food, and put the bait hive back in the tree.

  31. Good news, bad news in our hive that swarmed.

Good news: We spotted the queen so we know the queen cells produced one and also we saw some brood so we are back in business.

Bad news: Two bits of this. The super we added still has no drawn comb whatsoever. Additionally, some of the grungy nuc frames have grown together. We strongly suspect there is brood in there but we didn't want to rip the cells open by fooling with them so we had to leave them uninspected.

I can't wait to rotate these frames out and reclaim all this comb on them. The comb is so far out that one has a flap on it with cells on both sides. When we first set them up we could only put 9 frames in one box because the comb extends so far out they wouldn't all fit.

Still, seeing the new queen was a very good result for this day.

    #beekeeping

  32. Had to swap a lid on one of the "spicy" hives we had swapped a new queen into, and it is now ultra-calm. New (commercial) queen is ultra-mellow. Hope the bees can compete, however. 🤷 #beekeeping

  33. I thought about beekeeping today. I need to put the bait hive bees in a nuc and it's been cool so they probably would like to be fed and I need them in the nuc to do that. I have one or two leaky jars of goldenrod honey to feed... *doing other things* oh *sticky things* oh leaking honey... Now I'm warming up 40 lbs of honey so I can refill jars not quite so full they push the lid off when they crystallize which I suspect allowed them to absorb some moisture and then drip out.
