  2. 💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 🕷️🪐 #Spider-like channels etch #Mars’ southern hemisphere, carved by seasonal #CO2 ice that sublimes under #spring sunlight, building gas pressure until it cracks the ground and jets dust.

Lab #experiments at #NASA’s #JPL, in a liquid-nitrogen chamber called DUSTIE, recreated that process. A follow-up showed soil grain size and #water content shape how these features form, and they may hint at Mars’ warmer, wetter past.

  7. Intriguing light colors and texture of a little rock seen by #Perseverance's WATSON instrument, at site 91. Reminds me of that other one, seen at RMC 52.4312 on Sol 1164, more than two years ago:

  9. Hm… 🤔
I suspect #Perseverance is going to examine that apparently recent (geologically) crater seen in the map and in the NAVCAM image below (FOV in green). Where else could it be going, given tosol's drive?

  11. Say good bye to cryogenic chilled propellant in your rocket!

Rocket Boffins@ NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory recently fired up a magnetoplasmadynamic (MPD) thruster (aka "electric thruster") that runs on lithium metal vapor.

This prototype achieved power levels (120 kilowatts) beyond the highest-power electric thrusters on any of the agency’s current spacecraft.

    Fully developed and paired with a nuclear power source, they could support payloads required for human Mars missions. jpl.nasa.gov/news/nasa-fires-u #NASA #JPL #Princeton #ElectricPropulsion #Rockets #Space #Mars #Lithium #Thruster #RocketThruster #electromagnetic #magnetoplasmadynamic

  12. #Voyager2 cheats the power budget for another year
Carefully choreographed shutdown gives probe's three remaining instruments more time
#NASA's #JPL have eked out a little more life for instruments aboard the veteran Voyager 2 probe thanks to a power-saving effort called the "Big Bang."
The procedure involved switching several powered devices at once, turning some off and replacing others with lower-power alternatives while keeping the #spacecraft warm enough to function.
