  2. "The US National Science Foundation (NSF) will award about 30% fewer new research grants this fiscal year than in the last one, Nature has learnt. The steep drop continues a pattern that began last year, after US President Donald Trump took office, leaving the NSF with the lowest number of new grants awarded in more than four decades.

A major funder of basic science, the NSF struggled to make awards this year with a workforce that has been cut by the Trump administration and uncertainty around the funds available for spending. But the decline in new grants in 2026 can now be attributed mainly to US$1 billion of the agency’s $8.8-billion budget being held in a central account, inaccessible to core grant-issuing programmes. Staff members, who spoke to Nature on condition of anonymity out of fear of reprisal, say that much of that money is being allotted to a White House project called the Grand Research Challenges, which is aimed at scientific fields such as advanced materials and artificial intelligence.

The agency had issued 5,684 new grants as of 19 August, according to Grant Witness, a non-profit effort to track changes in US research funding. And internal NSF data show that there are around 400 grants waiting at its Office of Award Management (OAM) for processing. Staff members were required to submit all new proposals to the OAM by 3 August, so the final number of new grants issued for this fiscal year, which ends on 30 September, will almost certainly be about 6,100 (see ‘Grants throttled’). That’s 46% fewer than the average for 2021–24, before Trump took office. The last time this number was so low was in the early 1980s."

EDIT: One more day! Get your comment in by the end of Monday, Aug 24!

Three more days to comment on NSF's attempt to smuggle in OMB's already-rejected policies of terminating any grant without cause, gutting civil rights obligations and restricting international collaborations.

  5. NSF grants will fall to *half* of what they were before the Trump Admin this year, the lowest number since the early 1980s.

Why? (1) The White House is withholding $1 Billion for private projects, and (2) The NSF is using every accounting trick to make it look like they are spending without making new grants.

  6. @IngridHbn so, is the sharper look at the first image of a black hole useless?

From the article by the U.S. National Science Foundation National Optical-Infrared Astronomy Research Laboratory (NOIRLab):

"Machine learning reconstructs new image of Messier 87 from Event Horizon Telescope data

"A team of researchers, including an astronomer with NSF NOIRLab, has developed a new machine-learning technique to enhance the fidelity and sharpness of radio interferometry images. To demonstrate the power of their new approach, which is called PRIMO, the team created a new, high-fidelity version of the iconic Event Horizon Telescope's image of the supermassive black hole at the center of Messier 87, a giant elliptical galaxy located 55 million light-years from Earth. …"

  7. House Science Committee members Zoe Lofgren and Whitesides write to White House OSTP director Michael Kratsios on the black hole of where NSF money is going: "We have no reason to be surprised that you chose to continue this pattern of obfuscation and disrespect of the Committee’s oversight..."

  11. 🎓🚀 Oh, joy! The #NSF, in a stroke of sheer genius, has decided that four-year Ph.D. programs need even more #bureaucracy by adding #industry #placements. Because nothing screams "efficient" like government and #academia trying to play nice with #corporate #America. 😂🔒

  12. This screenshot is from a form that I had to fill out in order to apply for #NSF math research funding through CU Boulder when I was there. It seems that there is a list of forbidden (or at least discouraged) countries when it comes to collaborating. Now that I don't expect any funding from the United States, I would be interested in collaborating with more people from these countries. I'm particularly interested in #Cuba and #Venezuela since I'd like to improve my Spanish.

  13. NIH no longer allows letters of support, only letters of collaboration with most types of grant applications: grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/no

Having seen applications with dozens of support letters from people who aren't really involved with the proposed project, this makes sense to me (and follows existing policy from the )

  14. Update. Now the National Science Foundation (#NSF) is calling for public comments on a plan to revise its research-funding procedures. Comments are due by August 24.
    federalregister.gov/documents/

The full text of the proposal is not online for display in a browser. (Why?) But you can download it from this page.
    regulations.gov/document/NSF-2

The text is explicit that one purpose of the new proposal is to align the NSF rules with the proposed, new (May 2026) #OMB rules.

Note that the public comment period on the OMB proposal only closed on July 13. OMB is still considering the comments -- which are overwhelmingly negative -- and has not yet made final rules. In that sense, the NSF is unquestionably obeying in advance.

Also note that if many people skip commenting on the NSF plan (say, because they commented on the OMB plan), NSF might infer that not many people care or that opposition to the OMB plan doesn't carry over to the NSF plan. This looks deliberate. It would have been easy for NSF to wait for final rules from OMB.

  16. "The US National Science Foundation (NSF) is planning to expropriate money from its core science programmes to fund an initiative from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), Nature has learnt. The move would strain budgets that are already tight and force the agency to rescind funding for research proposals that are nearly finalized.

NSF staff members — who asked to remain anonymous out of fear of retaliation — and an internal NSF ledger seen by Nature suggest that the NSF plans to claw back around US$500 million that has already been distributed to grant-making divisions. That money would be withdrawn from three of the NSF’s eight main areas, or directorates: engineering; computer and information science and engineering; and mathematical and physical science.

To accommodate the expected funding withdrawal, programme officers, who handle grant proposals, at the three directorates are being required to pull back proposals that have already passed peer review and have been recommended for funding. More than 100 proposals have been affected; many of the researchers who submitted those proposals had already been informally notified of their awards, according to agency staff members.

The revocation of funds would add to the squeeze on the NSF. The US Congress trimmed the agency’s total funding for this year by roughly 3% from 2025 levels, to $8.75 billion, but internal budget numbers seen by Nature indicate that about $1 billion of that money never made it to the directorates."
