  1. NIH is proposing a change on how they report back review outcomes on grant applications. Rather than providing a specific impact score, applications would be put into one of three categories, "most competitive," "competitive," and "not discussed." grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/no

  3. #NIH is terminating #grants again, this time focused on #healthdisparities. The letter explains that #Bhattacharya’s priorities include “measurable health outcomes” and “solution-oriented approaches” in #health research
Letter says agency is “adjusting its extramural research portfolio, which includes terminating grant awards”
Terminations come as #WhiteHouse #OMB is moving forward with regulation that would give political appointees power to cancel #peerreviewed grants.

  4. "NIH Director Bhattacharya kills more health disparities grants."
    science.org/content/article/ni

"NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya is ending two more grants, both for health disparities research at the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt)…A grant to social epidemiologist Tamara Dubowitz “will be terminated in full” [and] more cancellations are coming...Her 5-year, NIH-funded study exploring health and socioeconomic factors contributing to cognitive aging and Alzheimer’s in African Americans living in poor neighborhoods in Pittsburgh is nearing completion, and her team has already spent $7 million of the $9.6 million grant. She says neither her project nor the other Pitt grant slated to be killed were given a chance to adjust their research to comply with new NIH priorities Bhattacharya has detailed."

  5. Opinion piece urging Congress to fund the NIH ME/CFS Research Roadmap

    bangordailynews.com/2026/08/04

"People with ME/CFS are being failed by a federal research investment that has, for decades, amounted to a fraction of what the disease demands. That is a policy choice — and policy choices can change."

The author has " long COVID that progressed into a diagnosis of myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome, or ME/CFS."

  7. I don't know what's happening at #NIH and #CSR, but the #GrantReviews no longer make sense. The last four reviews that me and my trainees have gotten include scores that don't match the identified strengths and weaknesses and include "weaknesses" that don't match the grant.

As in one reviewer docking us for "they only use one technique" when we do both recordings and opto, and in fact one of the other reviewers complained that we didn't identify the full virus or stimulation protocol we would use (it's the same technique we've used in previous publications). Or one reviewer complaining that the training plan doesn't include outside lab experiences and the other reviewer complaining that the workshops the trainee proposed to go to are listed in the training plan as "professional development" rather than "computational training".

I don't know if this is because the reviews aren't being discussed anymore and so are not cross-corrected, if the reviewers are new and don't actually know how to review, if the people are sending them to AI, or if people are so busy that they don't care. Or maybe its that they don't think it matters anymore since #NIH apparently isn't funding #grants with good scores either.

Grant scores have always been a sampling measure from a central tendency + noise. And the noise has always been high. But the reviews used to be about the grant itself. They just don't seem to be anymore.

The system is broken. At what point is it no longer worth writing grants, since it's a huge amount of work and literally takes us away from doing the actual science? And what are the other options?

Is it too late to learn how to rob banks?

    😞

  8. NIH no longer allows letters of support, only letters of collaboration with most types of grant applications: grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/no

Having seen applications with dozens of support letters from people who aren't really involved with the proposed project, this makes sense to me (and follows existing policy from the )

  9. Also, zero days (well, minus a lot of days because I've been slacking) since a random #Python package got a new #NIH dependency on another Python package which is actually a "fastest" #RustLang package which cannot be built because the author thinks it a great idea to require a nightly Rust compiler.

…and of course it's full of "unsafe" calls. Because Rust is obviously such a great language for making secure code.

  10. Heads up for those brave folks who are trying to download and save information from US government websites - the NIH has announced changes to their websites.

No idea whether this means data will be deleted or just rearranged but I thought I'd post about it here.
