  1. Our govts are keen to reduce #RedTape for business and Investments arguing it to be necessary to grow the economy, yet the very people who provide the seed ideas for such growth and prosperity are plunged into bottomless pits of excrutiating govt processes.

“Discovery grants are a key pillar of Australia’s research ecosystem, allowing scientists to do fundamental “blue-sky” research over a three-year funding period.
The Australian Research Council took nine months to process the 2025 grants. For the 2026 grants, they are now proposing to take up to 16 months.”

  2. SNF (Switzerland) restrictions proposed: only 1 concurrent research grant per PI (plus maybe one coop), only 1 proposal per year.

🔥 Hot take (since I'm not at all operating like this currently): I actually think this might be a good idea? It would curb some of the biggest "research mills", where one PI has a huge pyramid scheme underneath them, and might encourage more careful grant proposals, slower science. And might even put more emphasis back into the basic research funding (instead of the grant lotteries)?
(Maybe naive, I know, and I have no idea how this would be implemented)

  9. At UCLA, faculty groups are rallying against Trump’s push for a $1.2B settlement, after suing to disclose the proposal seen as targeting diversity and transgender inclusion. The administration’s threat follows accusations from the Justice Department over alleged inaction on antisemitism and civil rights during protests—charges Newsom calls “extortion.” While the dispute has temporarily blocked over $500M in research grants, courts have ordered most funds restored. UCLA warns paying the settlement could devastate the university system; the fight now involves state leaders urging Gov. Newsom to oppose White House demands. 10. 7.8: Why Do These Cancelled Science Grants Matter?

In this episode, Christina talks to Dr Gabriel Filippelli - one of the first scientists to have a running project canceled by the Trump administration. This fascinating interview reveals just how important internationally these American grants can be, and Dr Filippelli passionately describes this unprecedented attack on science and education and what we all lose when the work that scientists do grinds to a halt or is extremely politically curtailed. It's important, he tells us, to support the institutions that you care about and are vital to the continued knowledge of how to survive our climate-changed future.

Dr Filippelli is the Chancellor’s Professor of Earth Sciences at Indiana University Indianapolis and the Executive Director of the Indiana University Environmental Resilience Institute. He works at the junction between biogeochemical cycles, climate change, and human health.

Dr Filippelli has also written the book Climate Change and Life: The Complex Co-evolution of Climate and Life on Earth, and Beyond, which explores Earth's ecological resilience to the great changes in climate that have occurred over the history of the Earth. He was also part of the driving force behind Climate Change and Resilience in Indiana and Beyond, which details local efforts to reduce the risks and lessen the harmful impacts of climate change, as well as prepare for the unavoidable consequences of climate change.

  15. Medical and health research is vital to medicine and public health. There are already real world impacts felt around the country and around the world. People are dying, medical breakthroughs being delayed or prevented, and we are dismantling protections against #environmentalhazards. To put it in terms of money: health research grant money has a tangible #roi. It is not a money sink: we get more than we put in.

Access to healthcare is also being threatened with cuts to Medicaid which would prevent many who currently qualify from qualifying in the future. This means more #humans being kept from health insurance. A trip to the doctor is no longer a question of time or coinsurance but instead a decision between #life with crippling #debt or #death. #republicans are pushing for these cuts so their rich buddies pay even less in taxes and we can spend more the military. They are responsible for when you or your loved ones are faced with the decision between debt and death.

Hot off the press - our report on gender disparities in grant seeking at the University of Cambridge (who applies for and who gets research grant funding).

    bennettinstitute.cam.ac.uk/pub

    The story:
    1) The structural disparities are big (not so surprising)
    2) The patterns of disparity at particular grades in particular disciplines go both ways (more surprising)

  21. Ah, the riveting world of "circuit tracing" in language models 🤖🔍, because what we really needed was another way to complicate things we barely understand. A "replacement model" that makes things "interpretable"? 😂 More like a desperate attempt to justify endless AI research grants.

  25. Do I know anyone who has recently (past few years) secured a New Investigator #BBSRC Research grant? We are writing one and could really do with an example of what works..
If you do and would be willing to share all or part of the application material the #NeuroESC lab would be eternally grateful 🙏

Edit: this is what we're applying to: ukri.org/opportunity/bbsrc-new

Edit 2: Thanks to you all we've already got 3 example applications! You are all awesome 🤗 This will already help a lot, the last thing we would need is one from the most recent call (Jan 2024?) and as a "New Investigator", especially if you are also willing to share the reviewers' comments which are really useful to see what people look for in these applications - DM me if so 🙏
(It's our first one... lots to learn but not so many opportunities for learning!)

Hey Mastodon folks - I remember a paper that tried to estimate 'intrinsic scientific talent' (Q-factor?) looking over researchers’ careers, from at least 10 years ago. I think it looked at when in a researchers career they tended to do their most cited work. I remember the maths being beyond me. My search engine skills are failing me - can anyone remember the paper?

  38. People who write #ResearchGrants: do you write about
    1) projects that you’ve already almost completed (hiding the fact that they’re almost completed, so that you can use the funding for completely new projects), or
    2) new projects that you haven’t really started yet (for which you might just have some preliminary data)?

Do you think 1) is unethical? Do you think 1) is necessary? Do you think 1) has the highest chances of funding? Please comment :)
