    Human Radio Forever!

(My local is #WPRB Princeton, but there are a number of others. You just gotta look.)

  2. My Pal Jon Solomon is in the midst of his annual 25-hour holiday show on WPRB, which is of course the greatest way on Earth to experience the best Christmas songs you've never heard.

  3. @glecharles @Daojoan That is AWESOME.

#WFMU is one of our local #NJ stations, along with #WPRB! My fave station online is #KEXP
And we are going to go to the #PrincetonRecordExchange to build back the collection, slowly.

  4. Super interesting archive find from DJ Commie Francis: Evidence of a late 70s DJ calling himself "Johnny Roxx" who hosted a late night show on WPRB called "Crest of the New Wave".

There were definitely some outlier hosts playing punk and punk-adjacent music on the station circa 78-79, but for the most part WPRB was still pretty prog and AOR-focused at that time. And while the idea of a rogue DJ with a punk show isn't so unusual, the evidence offered by a short archival ("3 AM closing") mic break found on Reverb Nation reveals that he was going *much* deeper than the standard Sex Pistols/Buzzcocks fare. (He backannounces tracks from Teenage Jesus and the Jerks and the Desperate Bicycles -- both extremely fringe acts at that time, whose records were not widely available or easy to come by.) Listen here:

The WPRB fossil record has very little info about Johnny Roxx, apart from this most excellent photo.

  5. Happy birthday to WPRB, New Jersey's ONLY radio station! (First came on the air 12/15/1940.)

  6. College radio is such a great new source of music. Heard Desert Cruising did a special one off morning show on #WPRB #WPRBPrinceton with all new music. I am literally savoring looking up that playlist.

  11. Awesome NFCB bio of one of the most creative students I ever worked with at WPRB. I'm pretty sure Téa is the one who started referring to me as "Radio Dad", and if that's the case, reading this made me gush with radio dad pride. nfcb.org/community-radio-profi

  12. #WPRB is playing high grade classic cocktail adjacent instrumentals and man does it set a nice tone for Monday #RadioStreams

  13. just heard a george lewis chamber work with unintelligible title on #wprb and I miss that crazy kooky upbeat noisy composition already. I kept waiting for a dolphin squeak to drop.

  14. Having learned about Todd Briefly via #WPRB, I have rapidly become a big fan.

  15. youtube.com/watch?v=uZ0V55grYg The Garden State sure produced some excellent garageindiepunkwhatever in the early to mid nineties. New Jersey needs more recognition of this fact. #WPRB #GardenState

  16. #NowPlaying Four incredibly festive (and family-friendly) #BigBlack covers, recorded for Jon Solomon's 35th-annual 25-Hour Holiday Radio Show on 103.3 fm #WPRB. #NealMarkowski’s attention to detail and commitment to the bit is 🔥! nealmarkowski.bandcamp.com/alb

  17. A brief (re)introduction, for my one-year anniversary here.

I'm Mike Lupica, the radio guy, not the sportswriter. 30+ year community radio devotee, and the present advisor for WPRB. In bygone days, I was the events director at WFMU, an occasional fill-in host at East Village Radio, and a broadcast engineer at WNYC. I now helm a weekly show on WFMU's web-only Drummer stream.

I usually post about DIY, zines, jukeboxes, freeform radio, NYC, Paris, London, chickens, cats, dystopian near-future sci-fi, bushcraft, vinyl, strong coffee, weird dreams, good wine, urban biking, RenFaire vibes, hardboiled crime fiction, and old hip-hop airchecks.

I've ditched all other social media because I'm done with corporate shitbro culture and its unending desire to play kissyface with fascist chowderheads.

This place rules and I'm happy to be here. You all seem delightful.

  18. I found this picture years ago while digging through station archives in prep for WPRB's 75th anniversary exhibit. I was never able to ID the subjects, but damn, great photo anyway and one I was happy to stumble across again tonight.

  19. This cover for an acoustic foam catalog looks like it could be a Stockhausen LP. Tune into WPRB from noon-3 PM today to hear me not mention this on the air. Instead, I will play a bunch of cool records for you and periodically stop to tell you a bit about them.

  20. A short story with a surprise ending:

On this day ten years ago, I drove with one of WPRB's student DJs to purchase a $10 keyboard for one of the station's computers from a guy on Craigslist. We were to meet in the parking lot of a Dunkin Donuts in Trenton, NJ.

Upon our arrival, it is immediately apparent that nearly everyone else in this parking lot is in the process of either buying or selling drugs. It is lunchtime, on a weekday.

We stand around for a minute waiting for something to happen. Finally, it does. A muscular guy with a shaved head begins walking towards us, carrying what looks like a Mac keyboard. Even though he is dressed in street clothes, I can CLEARLY tell that he is a cop. (I have a good eye for this.)

"Fuck", I think and say at the same time. "What the fuck have we walked into here."

From a distance of ten yards, the cop yells: "Are you Mike from Craigslist?"

"Fuck", I think again (but do not say aloud this time.)

    "Yes?"

Officer Friendly arrives, shakes my hand, and then hands me the keyboard. I hand him ten dollars. He thanks us, and he then turns around and walks back to his car. Narcotics-related transactions continue all around us in every direction.

I toss the keyboard in the back seat of my car and we leave. Upon our return to the station, I examine the keyboard more closely and discover that instead of the customary English-language keys, it features only Turkish characters. I plug it into the computer it was destined for and learn that it is also broken.

  21. A Distant Beat | JOE YORKE & THE CO-OPERATORS | Waggle Dance Records-I didn’t know this was released but here it is. Singer from Bristol, UK with a high falsetto like Junior Murvin. I fell in love with his sound through the various singles that are out there. I first heard him on Sounds of the Caribbean radio show on #WPRB, Princeton hosted but Selctah Jerry. The show is broadcast on Saturday afternoon at 3PM, highly recommended radio programming! waggledancerecords.bandcamp.co

  22. Using a boxcutter to slice up a yoga mat on the back patio of a 120 year old house: Totally normal step in building a new broadcast studio.

  23. WPRB has begun building its off-campus studio and the first important piece of equipment arrived today. Behold! Our new Wheatstone mini-console. For a board of its size, it has a nice long fader throw, but I really wish the sliders had more resistance. This is a major industry peeve of mine... There's a unique satisfaction to using older consoles, whose faders were purposefully designed with some physical resistance behind them. (Or perhaps the ones I developed my radio chops with were just real dirty, which is entirely possible.) Nevertheless, most modern boards make it seem like I could sneeze and accidentally put my mic, two turntables, and the request line on the air all at once in doing so.
