  6. Understanding the Common Cold: Why Fighting Off Illness Leaves Us Feeling Poorly

    By: WPS News Health Correspondent
    Baybay City | August 7, 2026

At the heart of the body’s reaction to a cold is the immune response. When a virus, such as a rhinovirus, enters our system, our immune system springs into action. White blood cells, including macrophages and lymphocytes, recognize these invaders and initiate a complex defense process. They release signaling molecules known as cytokines, which play a crucial role in communication between cells during the immune response.

The release of cytokines triggers inflammation, particularly in the respiratory tract. This inflammation results in symptoms like a sore throat, nasal congestion, and a persistent cough. Blood vessels become more permeable, allowing immune cells to reach the site of infection. While this response is vital for combating the virus, it often leads to the discomfort and malaise we associate with colds.

The release of cytokines triggers inflammation, particularly in the respiratory tract.

Additionally, the body demands more energy to mount a defense against the infection. This redirection of metabolic resources can leave individuals feeling weak and fatigued. Altered levels of neurotransmitters in the brain during this immune response can also contribute to feelings of lethargy and, at times, even mild depression.

The combination of mucus production, coughing, and general discomfort from inflammation results in symptoms like headaches and muscle aches. While these signs are indicative of the body’s work to eliminate the virus, they can make recovering from a cold a challenging experience.

In summary, the discomfort experienced during a cold is a direct result of the body’s immune response and the inflammatory processes it triggers. Understanding these mechanisms not only demystifies the experience but also highlights the importance of allowing our bodies the time and care they need to recover.
