Cleaned up the right side of my balcony yesterday.
All tomatoes, melon, cucumber and beans are gone. Just some peppers and flowers left.

Finally ate my only homegrown melon with my family.
It was absolutely the best melon I had in a very long time.
Not as sweet as the ones from farmers market , but so tasteful and smelled amazing.
Unfortunately I only got one from my balcony garden!

Cleaning up the balcony. Almost all tomatoes are dead (except one that Is coming back. Have a melon that is growing but no flowers, and some cactus and other plants I grew from cuttings.
Going to do the same with the other side of the balcony tomorrow and get rid of all the dead plants.

My one and only melon!
Summer is over and I lost almost all my plants to the heat. Only a few survived and among them is this little melon.
Had to pick it up because it's breaking up. Going to save it until Tuesday when my wife and daughter coming home.

My daughter did an amazing job at kingyo-sukui at a local festival, coming away with three beautiful goldfish. I cleaned up my water lily bowl to make a home for them.
Lessons learned since last time:
- Practiced using a siphon to change the water
- Set up a solar-powered bubbler. Look at it go!
- Added soil at the bottom so maybe the bacteria situation will improve?
- We're feeding very judiciously to keep algae at bay

CW: Food - homegrown sansho pepper
And an even tinier tasty harvest - sansho/szechuan pepper. Picked when ripe red, dried in the sun so they split and self-deseeded for the most part, then dried for a couple of hours. Picked red (not green, which needs to be cooked then dried), the effect and taste is milder than shop bought.
Easy plant to grow, if dangerously spiky. And loved by aphids.

Three teensy tiny Japanese quinces, sliced and cored (so fiddly), candied with sugar and lemon juice for a couple of days, drained then dried in the dehydrator. Ready to be added to something that needs a strong lemony kick.
The cordial from the sugary soak liquid is excellent too.

I almost killed my jalapeno pepper.
I have most of my pepper plants in self-watering units made out of 5L water bottles.
I usually check their water level but I forgot to check this one.
It has a parsley growing as companion plant and given me 3 harvest already.
I can't believe I started this plant from seed in January 2026!
Hopefully it will come back soon.

Partner is processing apple sauce for a Kartoffelpuffer dinner - the big pile of apples (red delicious ballerina) were a little too floury to enjoy eating. Granny smith tree gets a few more days. Pears and a few quinces also need preserving, for now, they’ve just been washed (a couple had fallen).
Wish I had a little more energy to lend a hand. 😖

It's the end of the summer and I'm kind of just letting the garden go wild while I wait for the vines of the potatoes to die off so I can harvest those.
The vertical zucchinis were a surprise first time hit this year, although only one plant actually produced zucchinis and it was small to medium size. The storm knocking over one of the planters did cost me some basil and chamomile and lettuce, but the chamomile wasn't actually planted, it was a surprise from last year, and I also wasn't harvesting it. Same for the lettuce. It's easy to grow but I just don't cut it often enough to keep it from bolting. The bell peppers never got past their early stages, and I think I have the morning glories to thank for that. Just one planter of only morning glories next year.
I think I want to see about more fruit vegetable options that'll fit in the stacking planters for next season

Made a batch of spicy sauce using habanero and jalapeno peppers from the balcony garden, plus some sun dried tomatoes (shooed in italy) and some cherry tomatoes from the balcony with olive oil and juice of pomegranate (from the park next door).
It's delicious and very very spicy.
Used one table spoon of it in the tomato sauce for pasta and it had a good spicy taste (not much, but enough to make it taste good).
Filled one bottle for my daughter to take with her to Brussels and the rest will be used at home.

It’s so hard to tell when nashi are ripe and there is such a short window to overripe and alcoholic. 1.5 were lost, but the tree did good again this year.
And the new wild plum (closest to a blood plum) was also ready to give up its fruit.
Lost most of the kale to white fly, but also interrupted a stink bug laying eggs - good that I saw and squooshed that!

I think my herb harvest eyes were bigger than my “novelty” dehydrator’s capacity 😁
Thyme and rosemary can wait ‘till tomorrow. Sage, basil, bay, lemon verbena and marjoram now scenting the flat.
In other garden news - lots of veggie plants ripped out due to fungal infections, and big pumpkins harvested. Plenty of fruit lost to wasps too.

1kg of peaches from the little tree in a pot. A tub will get frozen after it was cooked with a bit of water and a lot of sugar. The rest was made into a pureed jam/jelly.
And probably around 2kg of cucumbers, rice vinegar and spices instead of the Kühn Aufguss.
It’s too hot to do canning!!!

Biggest harvest of habanero peppers from one plant on the balcony.
The heatwave seems to be working magic for my pepper plants, specially the habaneros.
The plant is full of flowers and small fruits and I picked these from it today to dry and use in cooking later.

The heat is killing my plants. None of my tomatoes blooming and I'm picking up the tomatoes that are rip.
Most of the larger tomato plants have died and only the cherry tomatoes and these pointy ones survived the heat.
The black tomato plant is not doing so well either. I'm afraid, I won't have any plants left by the end of July if the heatwave doesn't end.
