Here's a local story that is likely playing out in similar ways all over the United States: there are so many dead ash trees at Tyler Arboretum in Media, Pennsylvania, that they have closed most of the trails. I.e. there's a legitimate worry that a hiker will eventually get crushed by a falling tree. This situation is courtesy the emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis). I was lucky enough to spot this very rarely seen an adult Agrilus ater. Usually all you see are the larvae and their galleries. In some regions the imagos aren't seen for decades because they're hard to spot.

This Hardwood Heartwood Buprestid (Texania campestris) Was resting on a bole of a dead tree. The larvae feed in American Beech and Sycamore trees. They are about the beefiest beetle you will come across in north america. I find them to be absolutely gorgeous as well.
