  1. πŸ’πŸ»β€β™€οΈ ICYMI: 🦐🦘 Roly polies are terrestrial #crustaceans that evolved from marine-dwelling ancestors.

They share a specific trait with #kangaroos because both carry their young in a brood pouch. Female pill bugs carry their #eggs and newly-hatched young in a special pouch called a marsupium.

  17. Ah yes, the riveting saga of #isopods globe-trotting from #Madagascar to #Montenegro 🌍🦐. Who knew these unassuming #crustaceans had a more robust #travel itinerary than even the most pretentious Instagram influencer? If only booking a vacation were as simple as listing continents and calling it a "site" πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ.

  18. Sally Lightfoot crab (Grapsus grapsus)..GalΓ‘pagos Islands, west coast Americas...its name is said to come from its ability to run in all four directions...those back ridges serve a purpose, helping reinforce the exoskeleton against crashing waves. #wildlife #nature #crustaceans #science #ecology #photo

  19. Male Fiddler Crab (genus Uca, Austruca or Tubuca). They have an unusual diet, they're detritivores. They use the small claw to scoop up mouthfuls of sediment, sift out the algae and microbes, and then spit the sand back out in little pellets. #wildlife #nature #biology #crustaceans #photo

  20. Lobsters and crabs should not be exploited in any way, but there are at least five ways that their exploitation during farming can be considered especially cruel. πŸ¦žπŸ¦€ https://veganfta.com/blog/2026/03/17/5-examples-of-the-cruelty-of-lobster-and-crab-farming/ #lobsters #crabs #crustaceans

  21. πŸ¦€πŸ›‘οΈ In the #ChesapeakeBay, the biggest threat to a young blue crab isn't a hungry #fish – it's another blue crab.

A long-term study explains that while these #crustaceans are notoriously cannibalistic, juveniles have a better chance of surviving if they stick to the ultra-shallow waters of coastal estuaries where bigger #crabs can't easily reach them.

  23. One of the highlights of my day was when William Harland, a talented ecology undergrad here at #LincolnUniversityNZ, stopped by my office to show me his photos of temnocephalid flatworms. These distinctive squat tentacled flatworms live in colonies on NZ's freshwater crayfish, koura, and eat scraps left over when the koura feed. They apparently cause no bother to the koura.

William found these at Poolburn Reservoir in central Otago.

    Amazing!

  28. Woodlouse are #Crustaceans in the #Order Isopoda. They are NOT insects! With slightly under forty species here; it's worth learning to identify species. Common Pill Woodlouse (Armadillidium vulgare) seen in #Brighton by @[email protected] has both grey and orange colour forms. #brightonwildlife
