Because injecting a #chip would harm the 10 cm (4 in) #crustaceans, researchers superglue a batter-free PIT tag to each #shell and set it with baking soda water. The setup was first tested on a common surrogate species, and the tags letting go are actually a sign the crayfish survived long enough to molt.
