Onde o deslumbramento germina
Uma amiga estava vendo um trechinho em vídeo vertical no Instagram desse flashmob lançado hoje. Fui catar no YouTube. São 19 minutos de lágrimas ou pelo menos de emoção: ver dezenas, centenas (3 centenas no caso) de pessoas se reunindo para criar arte, para fazer música brotar no meio da cidade é uma das coisas mais especiais que a humanidade é capaz de fazer! Nenhuma tecnologia se compara e, infelizmente, andamos meio sem foco para o humano no meio de tanto esforço comercial para nos vender coisas.
Antes que digam qq coisa, sim, esse flashmob também é comercial, é diferente dos primeiros há mais de 20 anos, é um flashmob produzido por artistas que constroem carreias em mídias sociais, mas ainda é lindo e chorei!

Mas, então, comecei a lembrar dos primeiros flashmobs, quem inventou isso, que gênio! E digo quem: o coletivo de pessoas em redes sociais (não mídias como são hoje Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, etc. redes sociais de verdade! Como IRC, BBS, NewsGroups, Orkut).
O primeiro que lembro era de guarda-chuvas. Não achei, mas era simplesmente “Galera, todo mundo no lugar tal, hora tal, a gente abre os guarda-chuvas por 5 minutos e depois debanda!”. Teve um na Cinelândia no Rio de Janeiro, se não me engano. Também teve de guerra de travesseiros no Largo do Machado.
Algumas vezes o flashmob exigia uma grande dose de desiniibção e confiança que os colegas iam se engajar também, como no No Pants Day de 2013 em NY:

Qual era a graça? A graça tinha a ver com liberdade, com diversidade, mas o meu site sobre cibercultura e análise de comportamento é o Meme de Carbono. Aqui é um espaço de memórias e sentimentos.
Mas eu queria resgatar flashmobs musicais antigos, então fui catar!
Achei uns que eu não vi na época, como esse há 15 anos, lindo, lindo! Com estudantes, adolescentes, dançando a Waka para angariar fundos para uma escola no Kenia:

Flashmob raiz era assim: o pessoal se reunia de repente, fazia a ação e dispersava como se nada tivesse acontecido! Para mim isso tinha um significado forte, como se a coletividade pudesse aflorar a qualquer momento, se unir para fazer arte ou se divertir e dispersar de novo.
Era comum pessoas nada a ver com o flashmob se misturarem! Bem divertido!
Claro que tudo se mercantiliza e há 14 anos já existiam flashmobs-propaganda, mas ainda com uma alma meio coletiva, como esse de cartão de crédito:

Voltando um pouco para o presente e para flashmobs produzidos, tenho que comentar o Master of the Tides! Lançado há 12 anos!
Além de gostar muito da música e do clipe, serve para fazer justiça à tecnologia: ela não tem alma, mas pode ser usada para ecoar a alma! Esse é um dos primeiros clipes independentes que eu conheço em que caixas de som portáteis foram usadas para espalhar o som pela rua mantendo a sincronia. Tecnologia bem usada nos permite fazer coisas lindas!

Se você procurar por flashmob e o nome de uma música famosa, banda, tema, certamente achará muita coisa emocionante! Quanto mais antigo, mais espontâneo, não que produções como a primeira desse post não sejam maravilhosas, mas muitas vezes o mais simples é o que mais nos emociona, como “mob” envolvendo música e dança que vi, há 10 anos, e comentei somente dois anos depois no post Além do momento de beleza e poesia:

A Christmas Coral: Great Books That Never Were 🪸
A Christmas Carol. In Prose. Being a Ghost Story of Christmas is a famous Charles Dickens novella from 1843. It is not as good as the Muppet Christmas Carol special film (1992) of the same work (the one with Michael Caine in it).
However, better yet is the 1991 classic A Christmas Coral by novelist Dick Charles. This was his last work he ever had published, for he was abducted by aliens in 1993 and hasn’t been heard from since. Thus, this beautiful book is a testament to his existence prior to abandoning life on Earth.
Just Keep Swimming in A Christmas Coral
“It is a fair, even-handed, noble adjustment of things, that while there is infection in disease and sorrow, there is nothing in the world so irresistibly contagious as laughter and good humour. Oh, except whooping cough syndrome. That’s pretty contagious…”
The story follows the life of Ebenezer Scurvy in 1762, a pirate whom is a bit of a miserable prick. However, when he’s mercilessly attacked by a great white shark the blood loss leads to him viewing the world in a more upbeat way.
As he floats about in the ocean with a limb missing, he recalls his life in a series of hallucinations. The chapters go like this:
- Prologue
- Birth
- Childhood
- Formative years at Yarr University
- SHIVER ME TIMBERS!!!
- Recession
- More recession
- Plague outbreak
- Scurvy outbreak
- Pirating years
- Shark attack and limb loss
- Further pontifications
- Death and absorption by the ocean
- Epilogue
A Christmas Coral is notorious for its tediousness. The work is 1,100 pages and rambles a fair bit. It also makes references to more modern life, which is somewhat anachronistic given the work is supposed to be set in 1762.
“For it is good to be children sometimes, and never better than at Christmas, when its mighty Founder was a child Himself. And if you’re unaware about that reference, I’m on about Macaulay Culkin in Home Alone.”
Many literary critics were at pains to point out Macaulay Culkin could not possibly have starred in Home Alone circa 1762 as:
- Macaulay Culkin wasn’t alive
- Cinema didn’t exist
To set the record straight on this matter, Professional Moron reached out via telepathy to Dick Charles for a comment. He declined to comment. As such, his legacy is in ruins and this book is stupid woopid.
Addendum Thesis: Is The Christmas Carol Even Related to Christmas in Any Way?
We’re ending this review on a mini-dissertation, for there’s much scholarly musing over whether A Christmas Carol is, indeed, a work of Xmas-related literature. There are three core postulations:
- Yes, it is
- No, it is not
- Maybe
Compelling arguments, all, but we tend to side on the front of “maybe” as it’s the most apathetic. Yet, on reflection, we feel we may change our stance to “yes” as that’s the most nonsensical, but plausible.
We mean, it’s there in the title: A Christmas Carol.
The work may not go on to have anything to do about Christmas, or corals for that matter, but it’s there in the name and, therefore, that is a convincing argument (if one a tad childlike in its reasoning). Plus, the book references Macaulay Culkin in Home Alone and that’s about as Xmas as it gets, eh?
