#WeevilWednesday: some people have been confused about how female hollyhock weevils (_Rhopalapion longirostre_) use their long snouts, so here you go. Her mouthparts are at the end of the snout. She chews a tunnel down into the heart of the flowerbud. Then she turns around, extends her ovipositor (at the end of her abdomen), and lays eggs down the hole. The larvae have a safe place to grow, with plenty of food!

Seven families of beetles! And I just realized it's after midnight. Having a real bug light is addicting! The difference is amazing. The wall of the sales office that is illuminated on one side by a standard lightbulb has hardly any insects, compared to the number diversity attracted to my two small lights.

Before I go to bed, here's the cutest little weevil that hung out for a while.

Last weekend I observed a pair Tychius meliloti for a few hours on Melilotus albus. I wanted to see where exactly they choose to lay the eggs. It was very intense since the sun was burning and the situation was too hot. In the end they seemed to prefer some privacy, so I left them alone.

God knows it's not because anyone takes care of that bit of park. Luckily I know of a few other gardens in the neighbourhood with weevil-ridden hollyhocks right by the sidewalk.
