Old growth trees being transported on #bchwy19 near #Nanaimo this morning.
I would guess this is just one tree, likely transported by several truck loads. Looks like a western red cedar, about 200-300 years old.
They are still logging these in previously reserved areas along the Alberni Inlet (Nahmint) and on the North Island. 😢
These were in 8-10ft chunks on the truck. Not sure what their destination would be. Possibly chipoing for pulp/paper or 🤷♂️
A total open fire ban starts today which usually means the forests shut down.
Not sure if that is the case, as the fire danger is not extreme but any reason to stop cutting these elders would be worth it.

Heres a few of the coolest Sitka Spruce trees I found on a backpacking trip a couple of months ago in the Olympic National Park. If I only knew then what was coming next, I would've prepared differently. Because 100% of the plans I had then & there; changed. And to be real with you, Ive been super bummed these past couple of months. Despite some personal hardships, Ive witnessed some disasters around me that are far worse than what Ive experienced. It is a crazy, dangerous world out there at times and looking back at how I processed my own challenges... Im realizing sometimes the very thing we need, is exactly the very thing we should strive to give:
"What we call our despair is often only the painful eagerness of unfed hope.” — George Eliot
"He who plants a tree, plants a hope.” - Lucy Larcom
“When we love, we always strive to become better than we are. When we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better too.” — Paulo Coelho#hope #oldgrowth #thicktrunktuesday #inspiration #nature #love #mindfulness

Just because it isn’t on the news doesn’t mean the protests aren’t continuing. RCMP have their goons there apparently pulling anyone over who tries to go to the camp even though that is perfectly legal. #oldgrowth #bcpoli #rcmp #canpoli

Ancient Growth logging continues on southern Vancouver Island near Fairy Creek. This is a picture of people climbing an estimated* 600yr old cedar marked for removal this week. They had to sneak around police and logging company barriers to set up the tree sit. Last heard they are still there. Over two dozen arrested.

Concerned about the possibility that wood pellets (aka wood byproducts) produced by logging #OldGrowth in B.C. could be used for "green hydrogen". In turn, used for "carbon capture" and further fossil fuels.

A lot of my purpose with this account has been about letting go of my past pains, embracing change and sharing some example for moving forward as I personally keep noticing healing & connection with nature. Exploring, what can we learn from that? Feeling an end of this era, a new chapter to create. Im changing my lifestyle to some degree, a place Ive come to know. This feels strange to admit but this little box on wheels has been more of my home than anywhere else Ive lived these past five years. Ive worked many seasonal & remote jobs to create time for a nomadic lifestyle. I took a minimalist approach; recognizing & experimentally embracing you can do more with less. Slowly discovering many cross over philosophies with technology enthusiasts who love to embrace terms like FOSS, Libre, FLO and others alike. Pondering if many in technology fields seem to share similar views & values with ski bums, dirtbags and nomads? Ive met so many incredible people along the way and experiencing how healing it is when we genuinely connect.
The change for me now is of great importance to reflect. To follow through on realizing the healing wouldn't be complete without helping more people ahead. The silence was good, the isolation had peace but the final words of Chris McCandless still strike me deep: "Happiness is only real, when shared." Nothing lasts forever but letting go does feel uncomfortable. Setting my own intention for a mountain mindset based around sharing an appreciation, a love & respect for the land & people. I might have taken a simple approach to experiencing a complex world. And if theres anything Id still like to learn... is it better in life to ask questions than to give answers?

This story's been worming its way into my stomach all day. WTF is up with #NDP in BC? While the story is framed with the excuse that this was a one-off fuck up, it also says too little is done to protect #oldgrowth. As ridiculous as having #bcgreen splitting the left vote is in a first-past-the post system, I'm starting to understand the reasoning. And who the hell would cut a 1000 year old tree in the first place? #bcpoli

@HalifaxExaminer SOOF and friends are doing incredible work protecting NS forest diversity. The article clearly highlights the inaction of the provincial government towards their own published commitments. The government support of resource extraction above conservation shouts the empty promises to conserve and protect the small remaining % of older forests. The #novascotia government should be helping our citizen scientists and others not threatening them with jail and fines. #oldgrowth

The British Columbia government is looking for ways to help a pulp mill closing on Vancouver Island, Premier David Eby said Wednesday, but logging the province's old-growth forests for pulp is not an option.

@HalifaxExaminer Wow! You folks are awesome! Putting your personal safety and security on the line to protect our fewer and fewer diverse natural forests from the insatiable greed of corporations and their government enablers. #novascotia #oldgrowth #xr

“It is truly a chilling sight seeing one of the largest trees of its kind bleached and dry from the bare sun with no companions to keep it shade, and a reminder to humanity to hold dear every last remnant of ancient forest left today.” As Thomas Pakenham wrote in his book Remarkable Trees of the World.
What can we people learn from old growth trees? We depend on diversity in our ecosystem. The better the ecosystem the more balanced our individual lives become. Just my two cents but take a moment to understand this unique old growth tree, considered to be “The World’s Biggest Western Redcedar!” When loggers arrived, they were so impressed by its incredible size, they decided it should be saved, preserving it for future generations to see. While their hearts maybe were in a good place, they didn’t consider saving the tree’s surroundings clear cutting the ecosystem around it. The poor tree nearly died, shown by its bleached bark, rebelling in lonely isolation. However its life didn’t give up, deeply rooted within growth lives on. Rising to a height of 54m/178ft and diameter 5.9m/19.4ft around. The tree is known as the Duncan Cedar and you can read more about it here: https://www.monumentaltrees.com/en/usa/washington/jeffersoncounty/29552_approximately15milesfromusroute101/54945/
