Did a family trip down South to the desert and had to find the old growth Cacti. Learned these cactus's are pretty rare, only place in the world these are found. Always curious to learn more about nature. Thats me next to this giant! Saguaro National Park, AZ.

Everyone on the West coast is familiar with Alders - they're the first trees that sprout new life when a forest is cleared or burned away. But what most haven't seen is an #OldGrowth Alder grove.
The trees pictured here are not the usual thin stick like tree's you're used too, but nearly meter diameter trees standing in a unique wetland area that's prevented the usual Large Leaf Maple and Cedar to move in over the decades.

Mapping Multifunctionality In Remote Patagonian Forest Landscapes Reveals High-Value Ecosystems Beyond Protected Areas

“This paper is] a strong example of multifunctionality analysis applied to conservation planning. The study mapped six ecosystem functions, including carbon storage, nutrient availability, water regulation, erosion control, habitat quality, and ecological connectivity. [The author] combined satellite data, field soil sampling, and spatial modeling for this comprehensive analysis.
Two findings stand out.
1. Old-growth forests had the highest multifunctionality index of any land cover type.
2. 78.5% of the top multifunctionality hotspots fall outside the region's protected areas, even though PAs already cover more than 54% of the territory.
Together, these results make a clear case for expanding conservation of the remaining Intact Forest Landscapes and primary forests in Patagonia and elsewhere…”

“Remote forest landscapes provide critical references for understanding ecosystem functions (EFs) under low anthropogenic pressure, yet their capacity to sustain multiple EFs simultaneously remains poorly understood. [They] assessed landscape multifunctionality in western Patagonia by integrating satellite indicators, field data, and spatial modeling. Six EFs (carbon storage, nutrient availability, water regulation, erosion control, habitat quality, and ecological connectivity) were mapped, and their spatial relationships and hotspot distribution within and outside protected areas (PAs) were analyzed. Old-growth and secondary forests showed the highest functional performance. Strong synergies (ρ ≥ 0.6) between carbon storage and nutrient availability covered >50% of the landscape, whereas strong trade-offs (ρ ≤ –0.6) were spatially limited ( < 6%). Notably, 78% of multifunctionality hotspots occurred outside PAs, indicating that high-functional-value areas extend beyond formal conservation boundaries. These findings reveal spatial mismatches between multifunctionality and protection status and provide a replicable framework for integrating multifunctionality into conservation planning under global change…”

"Streeton decried the logging of old-growth forests:
‘With our settlement we have upset the natural order of things, and the result is fire, wind and desolation … [We] have no appreciation of the beauty and use of trees, no sense of our responsibility … in preserving the forests for future generations.’ "

Just watched this powerful Four Corners investigation. Victoria and WA shut down native forest logging in their state forests... but the demand for hardwood didn't vanish. Turns out Tasmanian old-growth logs are now flooding south to Victorian mills — including ones that got big taxpayer transition packages.
They're following the trucks, the money, and the ancient trees. Jobs vs. forests, regional towns vs. conservation battles in NSW too. Classic "zombie industry" stuff.#FourCorners #NativeForests #OldGrowth #Tasmania #Logging #Environment #Conservation #AustralianForests #ClimateAction

One thing I often forget that always gets me extra fascinated about life is the thing you get excited about usually will get other people excited about it too. Like an emotional transfer of excitement or joy takes over. Definitely a real important feature to note while guiding. Sharing that with someone who might not have ever noticed, might help make it more interesting to them. So I always try to show my excitement for old growth trees and that got my students last week excited about old growth trees. Then they thanked me for sharing my "nature wisdom" lol. Share your joys!

Old growth trees being transported on #bchwy19 near #Nanaimo this morning.
I would guess this is just one tree, likely transported by several truck loads. Looks like a western red cedar, about 200-300 years old.
They are still logging these in previously reserved areas along the Alberni Inlet (Nahmint) and on the North Island. 😢
These were in 8-10ft chunks on the truck. Not sure what their destination would be. Possibly chipoing for pulp/paper or 🤷♂️
A total open fire ban starts today which usually means the forests shut down.
Not sure if that is the case, as the fire danger is not extreme but any reason to stop cutting these elders would be worth it.

By increasing “wildfire salvage” of forests, B.C.’s forests minister Ravi Parmar is travelling down the same road that has seen the province’s logging rates plummet by more than half since the heyday of the 1980s. #bclab #OldGrowth

Experts say a new BC Forestry Advisory Council report doesn't mention the paradigm shift called for by the Old Growth Strategic Review. Without legal changes and measures to keep old growth standing, it's another “talk and log” situation.

A forest advisory council has recommended shifting B.C.’s forest regime towards more local decision-making.
The plan has received applause, but some experts warn the plan lacks teeth and risks putting fragile forest ecosystems at risk. Zoë Yunker reports. #bcpoli #OldGrowth

My #PhotoArt tribute to #BigLonelyDoug - one of the biggest #DouglasFir #trees in the world.
Learn more about this lonely #OldGrowth tree:
"It has the third highest tree score and third widest diameter of any known Douglas-fir in Canada, following the Red Creek Fir in the nearby San Juan Valley and the Bonin Giant in the Coquitlam River watershed in British Columbia's Lower Mainland"

Heres a few of the coolest Sitka Spruce trees I found on a backpacking trip a couple of months ago in the Olympic National Park. If I only knew then what was coming next, I would've prepared differently. Because 100% of the plans I had then & there; changed. And to be real with you, Ive been super bummed these past couple of months. Despite some personal hardships, Ive witnessed some disasters around me that are far worse than what Ive experienced. It is a crazy, dangerous world out there at times and looking back at how I processed my own challenges... Im realizing sometimes the very thing we need, is exactly the very thing we should strive to give:
"What we call our despair is often only the painful eagerness of unfed hope.” — George Eliot
"He who plants a tree, plants a hope.” - Lucy Larcom

Just because it isn’t on the news doesn’t mean the protests aren’t continuing. RCMP have their goons there apparently pulling anyone over who tries to go to the camp even though that is perfectly legal. #oldgrowth #bcpoli #rcmp #canpoli

Ancient Growth logging continues on southern Vancouver Island near Fairy Creek. This is a picture of people climbing an estimated* 600yr old cedar marked for removal this week. They had to sneak around police and logging company barriers to set up the tree sit. Last heard they are still there. Over two dozen arrested.

*estimated based on tree ring count of a “sister tree” cut recently nearby -
Concerned about the possibility that wood pellets (aka wood byproducts) produced by logging #OldGrowth in B.C. could be used for "green hydrogen". In turn, used for "carbon capture" and further fossil fuels.
