Found these old growth redwoods with some thick burn scars. Our old trees hold some important stories we could learn from. Probably preaching to the choir here, but worth saying we need our old growth trees to protect our environment from fires, keeping ecosystems diverse and extra cool during these burning hot days. And when we might feel helpless in that challenge its not hopeless, just being around these giant trees creates an inner calm you can actually feel. Growing in the language of peace. Trees are like a warm friend, always there when you need them.

A remnant giant from the ancient forest.
I walk the forest paths. Often these are just deer trails my dogs have found. Sometimes there are treasures on these trails.
This is the largest “wild” (not protected, not in a park or other set-aside) tree I’ve ever found. It’s a mystery to me why this giant was left standing when neighbours were felled. That was 100 years ago, so no one to ask. Instead of knowing, I stand in awe.
This tree may be 700-1000 years old. Rare for Douglas Firs in this region.

Did a family trip down South to the desert and had to find the old growth Cacti. Learned these cactus's are pretty rare, only place in the world these are found. Always curious to learn more about nature. Thats me next to this giant! Saguaro National Park, AZ.

I still am unable to go back here physically because it would break my heart too much. I spent almost 9 months, on/off, in the forest - trying to save the old growth trees here. The trees you see on the mountain slopes here are all gone. They were clearcut since this photo was taken from a resistance camp, higher up in the valley. I have seen aerial photos of what this spot looked like in 2023 - so many damn #ecocidal clearcuts into #AncientForest groves. This backs into #Carmannah #Walbran Park - which was also under threat of logging for awhile. It had to be blockaded before protection was granted. Avatar Grove & a few other #OldGrowth areas on Southern #VancouverIsland were given protection because activists fought hard to gain it.

The #BCNDP #BCgovernment has said no to a proposal to create a #ProtectedArea for an area of #OldGrowth #cedars near #DuncanLake.

"At this time, #BCParks is not considering including this area in the provincial protected areas system," wrote Minister of Land, Water and Resource Stewardship #NathanCullen in a letter to Grant Trower of Howser, B.C., on Sept. 3.

Trower is the founder of the group #WildlifeHabitatsForTomorrow that has been advocating for the protection of a 531-hectare grove and wetland.

He wants #BritishColumbia to declare the #CedarGroves a protected area, which is a category of protection just short of a full-fledged provincial park.

“There are many #trees in this grove that are well over 1,000 years old, and one that is estimated to be 2,100 years old,” said Trower. “They are the largest trees in the whole southern interior #rainforest. It isn’t just old growth. It’s #ancient old growth.”

He told the Nelson Star that Cullen's letter will not deter him.

"The advocacy is ongoing to ensure this special place will remain for our kids and grandchildren, for this grove is unique and easy to experience," he said, adding that the next steps will include media attention, targeted field trips and obtaining #FirstNations #endorsement.
