This most likely is Lycoperdon perlatum, the Common Puffball. These fungi are about an inch or so in diameter. Another common name that I particularly like is Devil's Snuff-box.
They were releasing spores, which looks like smoke arising from the hole at the top, but I was not agile enough to poke them to release spores and take the picture at the same time.

So many mushrooms are tricky to ID but one of the easier ones is the Chicken Fat Mushroom [Suillus americanus].
* reddish brown blotches on a yellow cap
* slimy or wet/sticky appearance
* found near certain pines, especially Eastern White PinesHere’s one of the largest fruitings I’ve found.
