Today's prize. I love these cauliflower mushrooms, they look like someone's brain escaped the confines of their skull and fell on the forest floor. They can be quite substantial, this specimen is about double the size of my own brain. Very good to eat, too.

The mushroom hutch is almost done. 8ft x 3ft x 4ft.
It is built on a foundation of stones. About 25 5gallon buckets of stones. A layer of gravel and then a layer of sand on top.
The hutch itself is made out of pressure treated timber at the base then 2x2 framing that has all been burned, lightly sanded, a coat of mineral oil was applied and then a final coat of mineral oil mixed with beeswax. Since it will be so humid in there I went with a bit of everything to stop it from rotting. Finally the structure is wrapped in 10mil plastic. I rienforced where it is nailed to the structure with tape. It used 500 roofing nails. Most of the roofing nails are along the bottom. I REALLY do not want slugs getting into this. Another anti slug measure I have is covering the entire surface of the treated boards that touches the ground with copper tape.
This all could have been like 2 pictures but it is getting dark. I still need to get hinges, some more sand, and find a good stick to prop the lid open with. -

Dryad's Saddle Mushroom!
While walking in the woods we came upon this huge pore fungus called Dryad's Saddle described as "…an annual mushroom commonly found attached to dead logs and stumps or on living hardwood trees at one point with a thick stem. …On the underside one can see the pores that are characteristic of the genus; they are made up of tubes packed together closely. The mushroom's smell resembles that of watermelon rind." [wikipedia]

Gestern im Krefelder Zoo: Eine blühende Seidenakazie/Schirmakazie (Albizia julibrissin). Die Blüten bestehen aus ganz weichen Fäden.
Und der braune Klotz auf dem zweiten Foto ist ein Riesen-Porling (Meripilus giganteus). Der Durchmesser des Hutes betrug um die 50 cm. -

#Mushrooms help remove #sewage and #EColi from Devon rivers

"Mushrooms could be used to filter out harmful waste and sewage in rivers, after a trial showed a certain fungi can destroy a type of bacteria that is a risk to human health.
"The fungi, called turkey tail mushroom, was used in part of a river in Devon and managed to filter out 80% of E. coli bacteria during the trial.
"E. coli is a type of bacteria which can be harmless and shows up in the intestines of healthy people. But certain types of E. coli can really harmful - causing vomiting, fever and severe health problems.
"During the trial, bags of turkey tail mushrooms were stacked across a riverbed, filtering water through their roots, which are called mycelia.
"The mycelia acted like a sponge, catching the E. coli bacteria to prevent it going into the river."Water industry regulator Ofwat has given Anglian Water £1.5 million to use fungi to clean up rivers because the trial worked so well.
"In another trial in Lincolnshire, a similar barricade caught 83% of phosphorus and 35% of nitrogen from rainwater running off farmers' fields.
"Farmers spread these chemicals as fertilisers, but when they wash into watercourses they can cause thick algae to form, starving fish of oxygen."

Description:
"Whether used as a lovely sculpted display, an ornament, or even as a pincushion, needle felted mushrooms are a fun project to create for all levels: those starting out, and those already familiar with the process. Class instruction will include wool types used, needle safety precautions and proper use, how to create a form using core wool, and adding exterior details with #DyedWool. Examples will be provided, such as fly agarics, boletes, chanterelles, and russulas. Students will be able to complete 1-2 mushrooms by the end of the class session, depending on the size and details.
"Sam Coon is a self-taught #FiberArtist, and has been making felt since being introduced to both needle felting and wet felting in 2009.
"Much of her inspiration is gleaned from the natural environment, particularly patterns, colors, and shapes. From there, various types of items are created including vessels, wall art pieces, sculptures, jewelry, and wearable felted items that are nuno felted. In these art forms, she uses wool fibers that have not been spun or woven, such as Merino or Corriedale. In many instances, fabric, silk and viscose fibers are incorporated to change the textural quality of the felt and for added dimension.
"What particularly stands out the most to her, when working with wool to make felt, is that the sculptural qualities of wool are impressive, making creative possibilities seemingly endless. Along with working in the studio, she also regularly teaches needle and wet felting classes at varying locations and age groups.
