Bunny Hop Into Spring!
It seems like we just shooed away the leprechauns of St. Paddy’s day, and now the Easter bunnies are already prancing across our doorsteps. Or at least the wild and wily kind. Bunnies are abound in my neighborhood, now that spring has sprung, and they are finding a buffet of fresh flowers to nosh on. While I go for my morning walk, just about everywhere I look there’s another little bunny nibbling on some grass, or sneaking under someone’s fence to get at their garden, or scurrying under the cover of a bush. Though the wild rabbits I saw in Ireland were huge, bigger than a cat! The adorable furry lumps of my local tromping grounds are much much smaller, no bigger than a guinea pig, these cute critters could be held in one hand, no problem.
And though in Western culture bunnies are seen as just cute and fluffy harbingers of spring, in Asian cultures they have a far more complex nature. In the zodiac, rabbits are the embodiment of kind gentleness and emotional intelligence. Though people born in the year of the rabbit are likely to be thoughtful and endearing friends, they aren’t the bravest of people and are unlikely to stick up for their friends or themselves. They struggle with balancing kindness with caution.
In Asian media like anime and manga, people that are depicted as bunny like are often bouncy, cheerful and sweet. There will almost always be a scene or two of their heads decorated with imagined or real rabbit ears. And in general, these people are very energetic and the main character might even become exhausted being around this character, but they are still well liked by everyone. On the flip side, these rabbit characters also often have a tragic past in which they still struggle with facing hard truths and defending themselves and other against bullies and injustices.
In the anime Fruits Basket, we meet Momiji, a cheerful, energetic, and a bit flippant half German boy of the Sohma family. Not surprisingly, he is also the rabbit zodiac animal of the family. Though when he is first introduced in the story, it appears that Momiji is just a happy, sweet, and kind boy, as the story progresses it becomes clear that he has experience a great deal of grief and heartache in his life.
In Momiji’s backstory arc, we learn that his own mother was horrified that her child was part of the family’s zodiac curse, and even tried to hurt herself she was so traumatized. In the end it was deemed better if she just forgot that Momiji even existed. And so his own mother chose to erase him from her mind. As kind as Momiji is, he still loves his family, even his mother, and instead chooses to put a smile on his face, and for much of the story turns away from the painful family relationships.

This year's crop of Japanese Maple seedlings.
I've done this multiple years in a row now, and have only managed to keep a single maple alive for multiple years in a row, it's still doing well afaik, it hasn't leafed out yet, will find out in a month or so.
I think I'm starting to get the hang of it though...
Rule 1: never let the soil get dry even on the surface, always moist.
Rule 2: no mid-day sun over the summer, it's too hot here. Indirect or filtered sunlight only. -

After visiting Kinkaku-ji, we took the train to Otsu, at the south end of Lake Biwa, only 10 minutes away. It was cool and grey by that point, and an extremely quiet residential area compared to the packed tourist spots of Kyoto.

Is this possibly the most beautiful tree right now in Tokyo? It is at least the best one we saw today! We saw it on a corner in Marunouchi, the area between Tokyo Station and the Imperial Palace. Bonsai hacks... it's hot and dry enough lately I have to water my little maple daily even though it's in the shade. :momiji:
As you can see by several scorched leaves, I cut it a bit too close earlier in the year when it hadn't even gotten that hot yet.
Thinking about how I was going to keep it alive over a short trip next month, I got a shallow pan from Daiso to put the pot in, and filled it to the top. That kept things watered for an extra 3 days, which should be enough to cover the trip.

In 1596 the old abbot of Honkoku-ji (本圀寺), Nisshin (日禛 1561-1617), received a parcel of land on Mt. Ogura (小倉山) from the wealthy Suminokura family.
He constructed a thatched hut overlooking the Saga Moor (嵯峨野), where he could escape the world.
