  12. We send greetings to all of our gardening friends, both north and south, on the equinox. For us it means more sunlight and warmer days ahead. BeetBear is taking the time to clean off his sign on our tool shed door. Two years ago he was posing with his violets and dandelions in the orchard, but this year we're a long way from that yet - it's been way too cold.

  13. Some gardening joy:

... the apples (that I don't really like) are ripening beautifully. I'm waiting a few more days to pick that one closest to the camera but the rest of them I'll leave for the birds

... yesterday evening and this morning I spent a couple of hours pulling up the grass and the dying nasturtiums. I've done about two thirds of it – it's not easy work, as the ground is quite dry (you might be able to see that in the second shot) but once it's done, I'll mulch the area and dump a heap of calls lilies along the side next to the fence. Yes, they're basically a weed but they're a much more manageable weed than the kikuyu, which I am removing with extreme prejudice wherever it may be

... while pulling up the undergrowth, I unearthed not only a legless lizard (I was expecting to see at least one, so it was with delight that I watched it wriggle away, rather than the momentary panic I've had before when I've mistaken them for snakes) but also the raspberry canes I planted a few years ago! They're a bit worse for wear due to being smothered somewhat by the nasturtiums and its evil kikuyu friend, as well as suffering from the glyphosate my neighbours use (sob) but they are still alive! I received three raspberry plants for Christmas from Dad/Kid2/Kid2's boyfriend and so I'll dig up these canes and plant all the canes together (in another part of the garden to reduce the impact of the Roundup)

... while I was out there, it rained gently for a few minutes, which was so welcome, and I also snacked on a few strawberries from the garden. This is the life, truly

  15. It is 30 degrees in Melbourne and the sun is shining brightly in the blue sky.

We took ourselves off to the local lawn bowls club this afternoon to see approximately 80 plants our gardening group donated and planted a few weeks ago. There have been two big dumps of rain since then interspersed with glorious spring weather so the plants are looking great. We have plans to do some more volunteer gardening stuff and will chat with people in the coming week about it.

This morning at home we started with reflecting on life, the universe and everything, then did repotting and gurneying the mould off a shade patch of concrete.

I did some emergency pruning of our lime tree. We are in a multi-year project to do strategic pruning of our lemon and lime trees to help them become better balanced. When we moved in a large, unpruned bougainvillea on the lefthand side fence shaded the lime tree (the tree on the left in the photo) so the lime tree leaned over to the right towards the lemon tree trying to find some sun (and didn't bear any fruit).

The previous owners pruned the lemon tree on one side only, away from the fence so it had more branches, leaves and fruit on the front of it than behind. It was also growing to the right to avoid the shade caused by the lime tree. When we moved in we nearly lost the lemon tree because it was so unbalanced it nearly fell over. We shoved a heavy outdoor table against it and then pruned it substantially.

We also chopped down the bougainvillea and regularly poisoned it so it didn't grow back. The lime tree then flourished and bore fruit for the first time. Last autumn we pruned the lime tree substantially because it too had grown so much away from the fence and had developed a dangerous lean. Now we are harvesting a lot of limes from it which we are giving away to neighbours.

This morning's prune of the lime tree on its right side will hopefully encourage the lemon tree to grow on the left and rebalance itself. We are getting fewer fruit on the lemon tree at the moment, largely because it needs to recover from the substantial prune of a couple of years ago.

While looking at the photos I took to accompany this post I spotted a tall branch on the lime tree sticking above the rest of the tree and leaning over the front of it. I think I should cut this branch too to make it better balanced. It is also too high to pick fruit from.

Moral of the story: Writing up one's gardening exploits for others and taking photos of them actually helps one notice more things to be done!

  16. As it is Spring, many native flowers are out. These photos are of some of the coastal flora featuring Leptospermum or native tea tree.

  17. We visited someone this morning who has grown this lovely tree. It is a Cedrella sinensis or Toona sinensis. It is a deciduous tree from east Asia. It has these lovely pink leaves in spring. They turn green apparently and in Autumn they turn yellow. A very colourful tree!

It is frost tolerant and drought tolerant.

  18. My cyclamen are flourishing. I was annoyed that I had planted the dark pink flowers at the back and the white flowers at the front. That meant that the dark pink was seen against the dark brown fence.

It was irritating me for ages. Then this week I suddenly realised there was an easy solution. The pot is just sitting on top of the pedestal but not attached. All I needed to do was to rotate the pot!

Voila! I think it looks much better.

  19. Uhhh, I went away and the daikon lept from the earth. With its friends. Anyone got a good recipie for a lot of daikon. I usually pick them small for stirfry, but a lot go to waste. Not a fan of them roasted.

Potentially thinking if I made a decent fermentation I could trade some with the local homegrown food exchange.

  24. Also I took Dad to a garden centre, one I'd never been to before. Such a cool little nursery with very decently priced plants.

He had a couple of gift vouchers and I didn't, but I still bought a bunch of plants. Oops. Had some stuff to do this arvo and was staving off a migraine so I didn't get into the garden today but tomorrow, I will.

  25. Australian companies and farmers experiment with using crushed basalt on farms instead of fertilisers - with promising results.

I wonder if I could find some crushed basalt for my depleted soil in inner- suburban Melbourne?

  26. A day of being near plants. First stop, the community garden for produce swap day, where I took peppermint cuttings and swapped for a cute little posey (posy?) in an old Vegemite jar. Also took two figs and some silverbeet, the latter of which I will add to the pea soup I'm making tomorrow.

I got to chat to a friend and meet some new people, and we tentatively discussed meeting up again socially soon (outside of the scheduled garden catch-ups).

Then dropped Dad home via Bunnings, where he bought some pots and other odds and ends, and I bought two punnets of English spinach seedlings and one of bok choy.

So this afternoon has been pulling up all the weeds (I mean, not ALL the weeds, of course – I have to leave some for another day or I'd be bored, right? Right) and planting out the seedlings in pots. Ideally I'd have them in raised beds but that's not possible just yet. We'll see what I can salvage/create as the year progresses. I figure if I can keep up the nutrients to them in these small pots they're going to be OK

  28. This morning I brought the worm farm inside for the summer. I also gave them pieces of paper that I had soaked overnight in water to bring up the moisture content in the worm farm. Yesterday we fed them small pieces of water melon peel which should also help re-hydrate them.

It is going to be 42 degrees tomorrow. This looks like it is going to be a very hot summer.

  29. I am sitting in our small back garden eating breakfast and surrounded by the gorgeous fragrance of gardenias.

These gardenias are about 7 years old. It is the best flowering they have had since we moved them from Sydney to Melbourne. I put that down to the fact that we moved them into bigger pots over the last 6 months or so. Previously they were drying out very quickly whereas now I can give them a good water and leave them for a few days.

  30. Stuff thats growing in our 'lawn replacement' area after 2 years; the photo series nobody asked for. (1 of 9)

I haven't seen much about how people realitically go with 'lawn replacement' mid-longer term, let alone in brisbane so...

Note we've had plenty of rain and generally let plants fight it out for dominance. This area never really had lawn. 3 years ago there was a freestanding (trip hazard) deck, concrete tiles, astroturf and and a sickly tree.

  31. Cutting last year's growth from Eucalyptus cloeziana (Gympie Messmate) pollards. This was an experiment to grow what is usually very large trees into a small area for pole/post (and biomass) production. Could also be a technique for growing Eucalypts in urban yards if one was so inclined.

The thicker prunings are used for fuel/biochar production with the leaf and twigs used for mulch below these stems.

  32. The annual task of salvaging beans from end of season pods. I felt this required something absurd in the way of musical accompaniment: #AuntyJack Sings #Wollongong. The album is 50 years old this year. (Bean pods finished before side 2.) #gardeningAU

  33. Someone has stolen the salvia that was thriving in our street garden and covered in flowers for months. It has been carefully dug out.

One of our neighbours has given up on a nice front garden because of people stealing his plants. This is why I stick to nasturtiums and geraniums - free and easy to grow from cuttings or seeds. No-one wants to steal them.

  34. 2 years and 2 months; the #BushRegen / #rewilding in a local riparian zone is moving along nicely. Using a hybrid #Syntropic / #miyawaki style in rows (barely visible now), with #pollard, lifting (pruning), biomass cycling of natives/weeds, and eventually thinning to select better performers to increase growth rates. 60m long, 40m wide, just over 3000 plants mostly all grown from seed (some seedlings dug up and potted).

  35. This morning I planted a small pot of blue salvia in our street garden. I must have looked mad out there watering the garden just after it had finished raining. However, there is a reason.

Whenever I plant out something I first big a deep hole and pour water into it. This is to ensure that the plant gets a head start by having very damp soil around the bottom of the roots of the plant. I mix the water with the soil, then put the plant on top and soil around it. Then I give it another water so the top level of soil is also damp. Then I add mulch.

In a dry country like Australia, I feel that this method gives newly planted plants a head-start and helps get them established. Despite about 2.6mm of rain in the last 24+ hours, the soil is parched after our El Nino spring. I hope all the rain forecast for the coming week actually eventuates.

  36. A shallow creek running through the deep bush, in #Blackwood #Victoria #Australia on this fine Spring day.

Ferns and #gumtrees adorned this space for hundreds of square kilometres… thriving in their natural habitat.

Earlier, #kookaburras were heard ringing out amongst the tree tops.

Blue Wrens flitted throughout the trees.

And no other person was around, for miles.

This is kinda Heaven on Earth!

    Sound up!!

  37. #Blackwood, #Victoria is home to these gorgeous orange flowering native shrubs.

Found it tough to identify these, therefore if anyone knows what they are, please enlighten us!

They were in abundance… we’re in late Spring here.

The backdrop of gorgeous gums completed the scene.

    Just gorgeous!
