  1. 5 Effective Homemade #InsecticidalSoap Recipes

    by Andrew, April 2, 2025

"Safer for People, Pets, and Edible Plants

One of the main reasons gardeners turn to insecticidal soap is that it’s non-toxic when used correctly. You don’t need to worry about dangerous fumes, chemical residues, or protective gear.

It’s generally safe to use on herbs, fruits, and vegetables, which makes it a strong option for homesteaders and anyone growing food at home.

While you should always rinse produce before eating, there’s no need to avoid the area after spraying.

    Better for the Environment

Chemical pesticides can build up in the soil, harm wildlife, and contribute to water contamination if they run off into nearby areas.

Insecticidal soap, made from biodegradable soap and simple ingredients like water or oil, breaks down quickly after use.

It doesn’t leave long-term residues or pollute the growing environment, making it a more sustainable solution for backyard gardens and small farms.

    Less Harmful to Beneficial Insects

While insecticidal soap can still harm helpful insects if sprayed directly on them, it doesn’t continue killing once it dries.

This gives pollinators and predators like ladybugs or lacewings a better chance to return to your garden unharmed after treatment.

Compared to many chemical options that linger for days or weeks, soap sprays offer a gentler approach that supports a balanced garden ecosystem."

  3. @johntimaeus So, I found some resources about the 3D fence. But for now, coyote pee will have to do. TY for the suggestion!

  4. Well damn! Something has been nibbling on the vegetable plants at the #CommunityGarden. TBH, I think a deer figured out how to jump over the electric fence (though I did find the fence open a couple of times this month, so that could have just put out the "welcome mat"). I recall finding what looked like deer tracks near the pumpkin patch, where the green pumpkins on the outer edge all had huge chunks taken out of them.

In my plot, my mammoth sunflower was de-leaved pretty high up (deer), as well as some squash and bean plants. Luckily, they don't like my flowers, or the Nightshades, and seem to have left my plot neighbor's corn alone... For now...

I think we need a real fence around the garden. Sigh...

  5. I've been expanding the garden around the well for a few years now. It was starting to re-seed itself, but some turkeys had a seed feast in the early spring!

  6. Damn groundhog ate most of the leaves off of two of my black hollyhocks -- that are just about to bloom! Ugh! It takes two years go get them to bloom. Grrrr... Other than trap and release, any solutions out there? What *don't* they like to eat?!!

  7. I found this cool moth while gardening, yesterday. Later I identified the photo as a Large Yellow Underwing and learned that it’s caterpillar is a serious garden pest.
The lovely moth was fortunate that I didn’t identify it until later.

  8. Quick and dirty attempt at dissuading the swamp hens from my garlic. Need to build something better.

(Dear swamphens I hope you all trip embarrassingly!)
