HELP!!!
Anyone know what this is?
I wanted to say #GladiolusCommunis and exclaim ‘#HelloPossums!!’
But I had a sneaking suspicion it could be something totally different.
And so too does my ID app… in fact it suggests anything from #Lobelia, #Montbretia, #CannaLily - and yes of course… #Gladiolus!
Google image search wanted to tell me it’s a gladdy… but you know what.. I’m not so sure.
Whatever it is, ‘twas snapped on my sisters farm in #Centralvictoria a few weeks back… deep red and it is happy as Larry.
Oh what the heck, I’ll just say it;
#HelloPossums!!!!🤣🤣🤣

Didn’t think of posting here until after I got home.
So didn’t do a ‘clear shot’ without my sons and I.
So here goes, and you get my mug too!

From the Family #Rosaceae is this vibrant fruiting tree. These are eveywhere and displaying red, in abundance throughout our city at the moment.
These are native to the Himalayas.
This one however, is growing in the front yard of an #ormond home, #melbourne, #Australia.
It’s been raining this morning so the fruit and green leaves are shining in the sun, that has just punched through the clouds.
The red fruits (called pomes) appear in autumn, and hang about well into winter if not eaten by the hungry birds.
Wonder what they taste like? 🤔
Tho I’m not that game 😅

A domestic #olivegrove consisting of a few hundred trees in #Centralvictoria #Australia… just after #dusk.
These will be ready to pick soon.
The trees will be subject to a machine that will ‘shake’ each of them one by one carefully (and with love!), so that the olives drop on a mat and scooped up into a hopper.
This machine is called a ‘shaker’, funny enough!
We’ve had many a year prior, with dozens of peeps from near and far coming to pick for a few hours over a weekend - and rewarded with a hearty spread, vino and cheer.
Loads of strangers turn up to participate.
Olives go off to a small processing plant nearby and come back as oil. Loads of rain last year which means a bumper crop this year.
This lot will yield between 1000 - 2000 litres this year I think…
Pretty cool!

I’m not even going to try to identity this one, as the ID app provided around a dozen possibilities.
But the common theme is that it’s likely to be from the #Rosaceae (#rose) family. (EDIT; appears plenty of advice that this is likely a #Hawthorn of some sort 🤔, perhaps. Thanks for the comments 👏👍).
The fruit on this is the size of the smallest blueberry you sometimes get in a punnet. Cute-as!
🙏♥️

The #Plumbago, also known as the #commonleadwort, is a plant in the genus Plumbago found in the Mediterranean and Central Asia.
This post is dedicated to @LifeTimeCooking who I know loves these things!
Plumbago I read with interest, is a rich source of #flavonoid. This means they contain powerful antioxidants with anti-inflammatory and immune system benefits.
So it seems these flowers are edible and somewhat healthy if used for decorative purposes on a plate!

As part of the #VicGov (#victoriangovernment) train infrastructure upgrades and boom gate removal project, a good deal of the track is now located above… opened only a couple of years ago.
Capital works in #melbourne and surrounding inner and outer suburbs, including a comprehensive underground train tunnelling network to complement the existing tunnels in the city, have been under construction in varying stages near on ten years now.
It’s designed to remove congestion due to traffic stoppages at boom gate intersections, quicker commute times for public transport users and to open the growth corridor of the out SE suburbs for commuters to better access the surrounding suburbs and city.
The bonus? New flora!
These dozen or so #crepemyrtle are flowering profusely and they bring up this otherwise dreary street enormously.
Such a mood lifter.

Here we have a #Neriumoleander… most commonly known as oleander or nerium.
Again we go pink this evening. A deep shade. We cannot dictate what appears on the footpath and when I can stop to snap!
But this one has been taken just now during #sunset and it is lovely.
The tree itself is a little dehydrated, lives wild near a railway line, although is doing just fine and still flowering with a good proportion of its bloom still bursting with colour.
🌸🙌

Happy #ChineseNewYear!
2023; Year of the #Rabbit.
“Wishing you health and happiness”.
#Oakleigh #Australia was host to this brilliant #liondance ceremony. Was noisy and spirited!! And it drew an interested crowd of all nationalities.
🙏❤️
“Lion dance is a traditional Chinese dance performance in which two dancers (often from a local martial arts school) work together in a stylized lion costume to move to the rhythm of the music. Lions are symbolic of wisdom and power in Chinese culture, and the purpose of the lion dance is to bring good fortune”.

It’s #AustraliaDay today!
Australia Day is the official national day of Australia. It marks the 1788 landing of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove.
It’s celebrated with a public holiday, family time, sausage in bread, meat pies, fun and recreation.
Some choose not not celebrate this day given the challenges associated with indigenous rights and the plight of equality for our aboriginal people throughout their lands.
Today from a visual hedonistic day, I’ll feature the #Australian iconic #wattletree. They grow to between 3 and 8 m (10 and 30 ft) in height. My childhood home had a massive one on the nature strip, I remember it fondly.
Each flowering bud is a ball-like structure that is covered by 40 to 100 small flowers that have five tiny petals and long stamens, which give the flower head a fluffy appearance.
These trees flower prolifically from mid year but tease us all year round with small flowering growths.
These 📷 pics are sourced from lawn.com.au to show what a full bloom looks like. They’re one of my favourite iconic #Australian tree… for obvious reasons!!

You’re feasting your eyes on a #Neriumoleander. Pretty in pink. And it’s quite large.
Light reds also feature atm in #melbourne Australia. This one is right at home in #MountWaverley #Australia.
It is so widely cultivated that no precise region of origin has been identified, though it is usually associated with the Mediterranean.
Taken just before sunset. It’s a cheery thing.

A cute piece of street art in #Toorak #Australia.
Some kind of #gumnut with our iconic gold $1 coin featured at the base.
Did you know next year will be the 40th year this coin replaced the one dollar note?
How time flies!

#Melbournes #bottanicalgardens is host to this newly budding #wattle
This will be teeming with small yellow buds in a week or two.
One of my all time favourites, characteristically Australian and very iconic!

#olives (Olea europaea) are natives of the #mediterranean parts of #asia and #africa and have been in cultivation for thousands of years.
There is archeological evidence that indicate olives were grown in #crete as early as 3500 BC and olives are some of the oldest living trees in #europe with a few believed to be well over 1,000 years old.
These 500 or so #olivetrees on the farm produce well over 1000 litres of oil, after being picked and pressed nearby.
It’s a young #olivegrove; about 25 years old but has produced a bumper crop during most of those years. Draught however, impacts yield from year to year.
Fruit will start to appear in the coming weeks and harvest will be late March, through to April. There’s usually a large window of opportunity to pick olives in #centralvictoria #Australia. D#And it’s all dependent on weather and the development of fully ripened #olives 🫒
Picking has always been a festive event with people from near and far coming to participate. Once all the hard work is done, food, drink and merriment normally follows!

This little building located on a suburban street in #camberwell was once the local butchery - yes just like milk bars, bakeries and mechanics, they were often once a feature in your neighbourhood.
It has been preserved magnificently and still has the faded description / painted signage on the top of the canopy.
Brickwork is awesome. It’s a visual hedonist’s and old-age building lover’s delight!

Muhammad Ali, born Cassius Clay, appears on a wall in a #melbourne suburb of #Balaclava
Whilst I’m not into boxing, this display is striking and is definitely worth a toot!
Nicknamed "The Greatest", he is regarded as one of the most significant sports figures of the 20th century, and is frequently ranked as the greatest heavyweight boxer of all time.
This mural captures the spirit of the legend, albeit in his early years.
He was 74 when he passed, in 2016.

This appeared sometime during lockdown and it’s just lovely.
The #echidna is so cute, so too the #rosella… beautiful colouring. Vibrant.
#Wombat and #bluetonguelizard even get a gig too!
The peeps in this scene can be described perhaps as #gumnut characters. Not sure, but I reckon their heads resemble the fruit from a eucalypt tree.
The one in blue, riding the rosella looks like it’s having fun!
The entire face of this art piece stretches about 20 metres (65 foot) and is located in downtown #Bentleigh #melbourne #victoria
Looks terrific IRL 🙏💖

This little #gumtree is so unassuming, beaming with pride in its early years in a #Melbourne shopping centre carpark
It’s ‘fruit’; the #gumnut is plentiful, so too it’s new leaves that contain an abundance of eucalyptus oil
I had a little discussion with it. And it kinda went like this…
“Your new trunk is shedding last years cover, as your new bark peels away and falls on the ground to decompose over time. You are self sustaining, as it’ll replenish the nutrients for the soil, which is necessary to your future growth.
Your fruit is in great supply this year, which means you’re abundant in health and of giving to the universe in which you live
And the slender new leaves you’ve grown are testimony to your giving nature. The healing properties of the eucalyptus you produce is a virtuous substance to share with those you grace your presence with; us humans.
Over and above however, you are simply beautiful. You want for nothing, you stand proud in your grace.
I see you… and now others do too
Be well my new friend”.
