  2. Stunning, mysterious and diverse – Australia’s 1700 orchids are the jewels of the country’s flowering plants.

Not only are Australia’s orchids unique in their beauty, they also possess diverse qualities – greenhoods flower in winter and trap unsuspecting fungal gnats to pollinate themselves, while sun orchids have numerous flowers that only open on sunny days.

  3. At $100 per kilo, quandongs have huge market potential—if only there were enough supply to meet demand! This native fruit thrives in arid regions and has long been an important bush food for First Nations people. #Quandongs #BushFood #AustralianNative #bushtucker #indigenous

  4. The ill-advised native raspberry (Rubus mollucanus) we've been training up a fence has started flowering. Two years in. Its absolutely covered a few metres of fence, despite aggressive pruning wherever it touches the ground. Angry angry bush.

Really struggled to find time to fruit or season info for that one, since mostly I think Rubus probus is more popular. Well now I know :)

  5. The greater stick-nest rat (Leporillus conditor) is munching through African boxthorns and nesting in the plant’s thickets.

While this might not seem unusual, it is actually evidence of a native animal thriving off an invasive species.

  6. Australia’s grey-headed flying-foxes (Pteropus poliocephalus) aren’t just adorable; they’re vital pollinators that disperse thousands of fruit seeds each night as they feed.

But while they might seem to fill the skies at dusk, why are their numbers declining?

The vivid colour of a fallen forest leaf on a tree fern.

I love the small trails around this area. I go to see what birds I can find and walk past natural vignettes like this so beautifully fallen into place.

This little field of bobbing puff balls were so beautiful in the morning sunshine. All in miniature as they were only 10cm tall. Growing in a sandy clearing on Kangaroo Island.

  10. Edit to add a photo of the baby bugs that have hatched. They are hanging out on the flower buds. Like you do if you are a living rainbow 🌈

    Hibiscus Harlequin bug.
These gorgeous little bugs live in tribes on my native hibiscus bushes. They can often be found in lines of ten or more travelling around the branches. They all change colours together, this is their red era with pink eggs. My favourite is the rainbow stage.
