  1. How cool is this?! I had to swing by Woolies after dropping Dad home tonight and they had restocked their saucepans (the ones they're giving away with Rewards points).

I don't tend to shop at Woolies much so I only had 50-odd points, but I also really needed a new frying pan since our old one started leaking some months ago. I'd thrown that one away but kept the lid.

Anyway. This Woolies had some of the biggest stainless steel frying pans in stock and so I thought, well, I'll have to pay $35 and use 35 points, but that's cheaper than the $100 for a similar frying pan in the homeware shop. The only downside is that this one doesn't come with a lid, oh well.

I get home, wash it up to use it for tea (tacos) and then, out of curiosity, get the lid from the old pan out of the cupboard and try it for size. IT FITS. It fits so well!

So how awesome: I got a decent stainless steel pan for relatively little money and the old lid fits. I'm irrationally happy about this whole thing 😊

  6. What a full weekend. Thank goodness for work tomorrow, in some respects – it was a really great couple of days but I badly need some recharge quiet time!

Yesterday was the Green Fair on the Square and I picked up my free plants, huzzah! Bumped into a friend, which was lovely. I also rode a bike to make a smoothie for Kid3 and then Dad and I went to a talk by a local elder about resilience and sustainability from an Indigenous perspective. That was super interesting and fascinating and I would have loved to stay and chat with her for hours.

The rest of the day was errands and busyness. Today was a bit the same but with extra gardening (which was, of course, great). I planted the free plants and also the poor kangaroo paws that I believe have been waiting in their pots since last year 😬 Had to get quite aggressive with the trowel to break up some of the roots... hopefully they cope in the ground OK.

  11. #ThreeGoodThings on a Sunday evening:

+ spent an hour in the garden and as I was filling a planter box with soil, a mole cricket fell out of the potting mix bag. We've been hearing them at night recently (even though they're probably due for hibernation soon, I reckon). I scooped it out of the planter box and put it down carefully and it started burrowing straight away. So exciting to see it :)

+ visited the community garden yesterday despite the rain. I took lemons, lilly pillies and rosemary to swap, and brought home tomatoes, garlic, basil and rhubarb

+ there was a tiny fire in the kitchen earlier... this is a Good Thing because I happened to walk in as it was starting and said, 'Ooh, that's interesting' and then set about putting it out. tl;dr the sausages spat some fat into the gas griller, the fat caught fire and then dripped down into the fat tray where it continued to burn. Bit stinky, glad I walked in when I did. I was thinking of grabbing the fire blanket but as it turned out, a saucepan lid did the trick (so I can save the fire blanket for another, bigger fire!)

  12. My teacher got me two new trumpet books this week! I can work through them at my leisure but we chose a few to get me started. He also told me that he's taught me all he can on an individual basis and now I need to join the band. That's a bit scary and new and exciting...? But he said he's told them all about me and they keep asking when I'm coming 🥰

Due to family stuff I won't be able to go next week but we've agreed that he'll bring the band music next time we meet and then we can go over it together. Progress!

Also, something I've noticed recently is how much music runs through my head now. I'm often thinking about motifs and melodies, either ones that I've played or ones I'd like to play. It's a cool development

    #music #trumpet #ThingsILove #StartFromScratch

  13. It's coming up to three months of learning trumpet (about two months of lessons). The book my teacher gave me six weeks ago is supposed to last a full school year and we're nearly finished it – this sounds more impressive than it is because the book is for beginner musicians, not just beginner trumpet players. So there's lots of 'this is a minim/crotchet/rest/key signature' which I don't need to learn.

Biggest challenge continues to be lip strength. But also I find it hard to be thinking of everything at once when I'm playing something new. There's finger positions, intonation, pressure, pitch, so I find myself gripping the trumpet harder than I should, and getting a sore hand afterwards!

I spoke about that with my teacher and he reassured me that there's so much to think of, no wonder I sometimes find it hard. It will be fine with time. He is a good and patient teacher and we're doing more and more duets – this, I love, because you have to keep up and keep playing, no matter the mistakes!

I can play almost 30 minutes at a stretch now, which is making practice sessions more enjoyable. So the short version of this post should read: Trumpet. Still loving it. Music is so fun. The end (or actually still very much the beginning).

    #trumpet #music #ThingsILove

  14. Trumpet update: I've now had three lessons, and yesterday my teacher also gave me the book he used to use for beginners, and it's super. I can play whole notes from the A below middle-C and up to the C above middle-C.

    Yesterday I learnt B-flat.

Teacher: So now you know your first flat!

Me: Yes! And it's B-flat, which is my favourite flat.

    Teacher: ...is it?

It then occurred to me that not everyone has favourite flats? Surely that's not the case!

  15. Some gardening joy:

... the apples (that I don't really like) are ripening beautifully. I'm waiting a few more days to pick that one closest to the camera but the rest of them I'll leave for the birds

... yesterday evening and this morning I spent a couple of hours pulling up the grass and the dying nasturtiums. I've done about two thirds of it – it's not easy work, as the ground is quite dry (you might be able to see that in the second shot) but once it's done, I'll mulch the area and dump a heap of calls lilies along the side next to the fence. Yes, they're basically a weed but they're a much more manageable weed than the kikuyu, which I am removing with extreme prejudice wherever it may be

... while pulling up the undergrowth, I unearthed not only a legless lizard (I was expecting to see at least one, so it was with delight that I watched it wriggle away, rather than the momentary panic I've had before when I've mistaken them for snakes) but also the raspberry canes I planted a few years ago! They're a bit worse for wear due to being smothered somewhat by the nasturtiums and its evil kikuyu friend, as well as suffering from the glyphosate my neighbours use (sob) but they are still alive! I received three raspberry plants for Christmas from Dad/Kid2/Kid2's boyfriend and so I'll dig up these canes and plant all the canes together (in another part of the garden to reduce the impact of the Roundup)

... while I was out there, it rained gently for a few minutes, which was so welcome, and I also snacked on a few strawberries from the garden. This is the life, truly

  16. Well, Dad is currently back home and some relatives are staying with him but he and I have spent the last two days going back and forth from the hospital, and are still no closer to really knowing what's wrong. That's distressing. He's feeling better for now so we'll see what the specialist has to say – he may have to go to Perth but at least my sister is there.

However! Apart from all that, today was kind of great? I took Kid1 to work and Kid3 came too, then we went to the market where we got sugar loaf cabbage and some strawberries, then I picked up the library book I had on reserve, and we went to take Dad shopping. That's when we had to detour to the hospital for a couple of hours but then we brought him home, and when I took the compost out, I spotted a blue tongue lizard for the first time in years (and also the skink that lives near the old pond, who is equally gorgeous but whom I do see most times I visit).

Then we picked a bunch of roses from the garden and when my rellies arrived, we left Dad with them and went and did the shopping for him (since he missed out earlier).

Finally on the way back home, we drove to check if the Thai food van was still at its usual spot outside Officeworks, and it was, hurray! So I ordered a late lunch and when 3 and I picked it up, the business owner said she'd accidentally overcharged us so she'd given us something extra. I didn't catch what she'd said but when we got home, we discovered it was sticky rice with mango and coconut cream. It was superb.

Got to take Kid2 to and from a party later but otherwise zero obligations for the rest of the day. Thank goodness. Also there's still one serving left of mango sticky rice. Reckon I'll have it for tea 🥰

+ Jarrah continues to have seizure-free days. If we get to Thursday next week without another one, we can start transitioning to another long term medication...

+ Dad had to go to hospital in the ambulance but is on the mend. I knew he was feeling better when he gave a hearty chuckle after I told him that he was apparently dead (they'd not hooked him up to the monitor after his scan and so he was 'flatlining')

+ Long weekend yaaaaay. It's been such a week.

    #LongWeekend #ThreeGoodThings #ThingsILove #dogs #hospital

  18. In the past week and a half Jarrah has had five seizures. It started on Saturday 20th and we thought it might be a one-off; after speaking to the on call vet, I made an appointment for the following Monday and they took some blood.

Blood tests showed nothing remarkable so we agreed that we'd just monitor him. Days passed and we figured, yay, just an anomaly. But then on the weekend, he had another – much shorter, but still a concern. Then on Monday night, another. Then another on yesterday morning at 4am, and another at 9am. I was able to get another vet appointment and we discussed options.

We can do more extensive (and expensive) blood tests but the vet isn't sure it would offer much extra info. We can also do imaging to see if it's a tumour – however, that involves a specialist, a fair bit of travel, and lots of money. I suggested that knowing if there were a tumour won't help anyway, right? They can't do surgery and I wouldn't want to put Jarrah through surgery or chemo/radiotherapy. The vet agreed and is very supportive of low level intervention as much as possible.

So we're trying an anti seizure medicine. He's had four doses so far. And no seizures in the last 30 hours. This is good news but we're not out of the woods... But then, nothing is ever guaranteed so we'll take what we can get. If the medicine doesn't work, we have to make some hard decisions. The thought makes me cry. But also, I know I have loved him as much as I could, every day that he's lived with us, and I'll continue to do so, probably forever, no matter how long he has left. A reminder to be here now, and not cry about what's to come, right?

  19. I have been checking the orange tree daily to see its progress and today there was an orange waiting for me on the ground! A little bit green but when I cut it open, it was surprisingly ripe and quite juicy. Not super sweet but also not eye-twitchingly sour. I'm so delighted. There are two more on the tree that should ripen within the next week or so, yay!

  20. It was apparently International Dog Day yesterday but isn't every day Dog Day? The boys are tired because it's 9pm and therefore bedtime, plus they both had a walk earlier

  21. Today has been quite the day, starting with meetings after work that made for a long 10.5 hour day looking at computer screens. It's kind of been quite the week? I'm so worn out by it all and my digestive system is annoyed by the coleslaw I ate for lunch but there are still #ThreeGoodThings

    * homemade pizzas for tea and leftovers for lunch tomorrow

    * yoga

    * messaging with a former work colleague, whom I miss, but am still glad I can chat to her

  23. So often I don't go to the beach on the weekend, and there isn't really a reason? Like, it's not far and for the most part I could definitely go and spend and hour or two there, even when I'm busy.

Then today! Today I went and it was amazing – what was I expecting, though, really? It's the beach. Kid3 and Kid4 went swimming because young people do not care about their kidneys, and I sat in the sun and edited a manuscript. Then we bought chips and hot chocolate and said hello to dogs and walked along the beach.

10/10 would go again (and almost certainly will)

  24. Ah, the weekend beginneth.

I have ingredients to make lentil soup and yoghurt, which I'm super happy about (will probably eat those separately, especially since I'm going to make vanilla flavoured yoghurt). My mood has been low lately, so I'm trying to boost my poor depleted microbiome...

Tomorrow is the usual shopping day with Dad and then mostly at home, since I've got a fair bit of freelance stuff to catch up on, plus the endless PhD edits. I know they will end eventually but I've done the easy-to-do bits and now there's the actually-changing-stuff bits. More effort required = more procrastination. Pretty sure there's a direct correlation between those. Maybe I'll procrastinate by seeing if anyone has written a paper on that.

Tonight I'm putting aside some time to write emails to two friends plus I need to organise a catchup with another friend next week. I said this week wasn't great because I was busy but it occurs to me that next week could well be busier, but also... that is a recurring theme so I am just going to make a date and fit it in because otherwise there is no time for excellent friend chats (and good chats are life, aren't they?)

Ended the workweek on a high by booking a week of holidays in September. I'm planning to travel to Perth and see my favourite Perthlings, plus the Terracotta Warriors, hooray!

  25. My PC was dying a slow death and so we decided to experiment with subbing in a Raspberry Pi for work, since most of what I do is text-based.

I didn't want to just have it naked on the desk so Adam printed me a pi(e) case 😁

  26. I'm so thrilled – the moon is very bright tonight and when I let the dogs out, I stepped outside too, just to enjoy the light and what do I see but two dark round shapes high up in the leafless branches of the plum tree! Possums! Squeee!

I quietly told them how happy I was to see them and then ducked back inside to get my phone to see if I could get a picture. It's not a great picture, but you can hopefully make them out

    #garden #possums #wildlife #ThingsILove

  27. It's a long weekend in my state of WA, but I work on NSW public holidays, so I have to wait an extra week. Never mind -- I've also booked some days of leave so I'm looking forward to a long, long weekend.

I'm going to meet up with at least one friend, do a heap of weeding and reading and cooking, and also clean the house. I feel as though when I was younger, I would not have been excited to clean the house. Maybe it's a middle-aged thing.

One of the kids' friends was hanging out in our kitchen the other night while I was making tea. He told me how they had a large spare room but that they didn't have anyone over because their house was a mess.

And I said, 'I know what you mean. Then again, our house is also a mess, but somehow people still come over and don't seem to mind that much.' And we laughed together about that (because he was over and doesn't seem to mind that much)!

It was one of those times when words come out of your mouth and you realise it was completely new thought you'd not said aloud before but also was totally true.

I still would like a cleaner, tidier house. I love it when the kitchen bench is empty of stuff and the washing up is all done. But maybe I have moved on from a deep sense of shame at not having coffee-table-magazine-level of home presentation and gained the perspective of 'the people who really matter don't care and will probably even wash up if I asked them to'.

I do love a good and unexpected epiphany (I guess all epiphanies are unexpected, but you know what I mean).

  28. #ThreeGoodThings

    - finally the weekend. It's been a long week

    - chatting with a friend and former work colleague, and then a wonderful email from another friend and colleague; feeling very blessed and content to know such kind folk who seem to know just the right time to get in touch

    - listening to 90s songs in the kitchen while making pasta bake for an easy-peasy quick and easy tea

    #food #3GoodThings #ThingsILove #friends #weekend

  29. She was sitting next to the dog and he moved his paw, which was so shocking that she had to jump half a metre into the air and fluff up her tail. Now she's on my outstretched legs, accepting chin scratches as I apologise for the existence of said dog

    #CatsOfMastodon #cats #ThingsILove

  30. Today Kid2's boyfriend messaged me to ask me about making bechamel and I asked if it would be OK to call (Kid2 was at work and he was making pasta bake for them both to have for tea tonight).

We chatted about bechamel and what to do if it caught on the bottom, and then after we hung up, he texted a few more questions and got on with the cooking.

I love that it's not just my kids but also their friends who message and call to ask cooking questions. I recently talked to a friend about my realisation that maybe I chose to have several kids because I wanted them to have the closeness I missed out on. I look at how they're getting older and I think, maybe it's working, but also, meanwhile, I have all these connections with community in a way I didn't have, growing up. And that was unexpected, but it's so welcome.

    #food #cooking #parenting #ThingsILove #BestThings

  31. Three good things:

    - when we came back into the garden from walking the older dog, I saw a ladybird hanging out on the rosemary bush

    - Kid2 had an important interview to secure a workplace training spot and it was all very positive and hopeful (and we should find out tomorrow)

    - it's a four day week this week. I'm so excited about time off at Easter

    #ThreeGoodThings #ThingsILove #parenting #garden

  32. A day of being near plants. First stop, the community garden for produce swap day, where I took peppermint cuttings and swapped for a cute little posey (posy?) in an old Vegemite jar. Also took two figs and some silverbeet, the latter of which I will add to the pea soup I'm making tomorrow.

I got to chat to a friend and meet some new people, and we tentatively discussed meeting up again socially soon (outside of the scheduled garden catch-ups).

Then dropped Dad home via Bunnings, where he bought some pots and other odds and ends, and I bought two punnets of English spinach seedlings and one of bok choy.

So this afternoon has been pulling up all the weeds (I mean, not ALL the weeds, of course – I have to leave some for another day or I'd be bored, right? Right) and planting out the seedlings in pots. Ideally I'd have them in raised beds but that's not possible just yet. We'll see what I can salvage/create as the year progresses. I figure if I can keep up the nutrients to them in these small pots they're going to be OK

  33. When you get a message from the library that your reserved book is ready for collection and then you discover that TWO of your reserved books are ready!! What a great day.

Since these are very much up my alley, they may not give me loads of new information but I'll enjoy them all the same

    #books #library #ThingsILove #sustainability #gardening #food

  34. Wow, this week has wiped me out. We're short staffed at work (as predicted) so it's just been go, go, go all week. Tomorrow is a public holiday for WA but I work to the NSW public holiday schedule, so it's back to work for me while everyone else gets to laze about at home around me. Meh.

However, I did get to go to the community garden yesterday, which was fun. We harvested hops flowers (they smell delightfully herby and fresh) and dandelion root. I've chopped up the root and will roast it tomorrow to enjoy my very own cup of locally grown 'coffee'. Kind of excited about that. The hops flowers are in the freezer to be used in a relaxing tea when needed.

The long-range forecast for the current and next season, Bunuru and Djeran (autum, or roughly March -- May) is warmer than usual and also dry. I am trying to see how we can budget in a rainwater tank or two for next summer. I'm looking forward to the rain, as always at this time of year.

Failing the rain, here are the good things:

    - found a ripe strawberry while watering the garden and ate it
    - descaled both the washing machine and the dishwasher and cleaned the seals. That might sound very proactive of me, but I can't remember the last time I did either, so they were well overdue. However, I did feel very accomplished

    - there were no eggs at the shop the other day and we were completely out and then Kid2 went hunting and found four! Woohoo!

    - I was going to have a potato for tea tonight (with other food) and remembered that I'd used up all the potatoes yesterday... but then I realised I also had sweet potatoes left! So I cut up some of them and made sweet potato chips and they were SO GOOD

    - got the car serviced and the bill didn't break the entire budget, for once

    - took back my library books when I was in town and overheard a small child telling her mother she'd like to climb into the return slot with the books, and the librarian said, 'Oh, you don't want to do that! You might get stuck in the library overnight!' and the child said, 'But I would LOVE that' and I was thinking, yep, same

  36. We've had two technicians in our house this past week to solve our internet woes, and both needed access to the wall in my study.

So you should also know that we have built floor-to-ceiling bookcases in the study, and we have about 1200 books in there.

First technician, on walking into the room: UGH. You have BOOKS. *groans*

(Us: we can... move the books though?)

Second technician: OH MY GOD THIS IS AWESOME! *chuckles with delight*

She then proceeded to sit down and do her thing (in the space where we'd cleared away the books the other day) and then when she looked up to ask me a question, she caught sight of a book and went, 'Ooh! You have Gridiron!'

Book people are the best people ❤️
