  2. Mother’s Day: From Peace to Profit

Mother’s Day has striking American roots. In 1870, Julia Ward Howe called women to organize for peace after the carnage of war. Anna Jarvis created the modern observance in 1908 as a personal tribute to mothers, winning national recognition in 1914. Then commerce took over: florists, card makers, and confectioners turned sentiment into sales. Jarvis, appalled by the commercialization of her own creation, spent years fighting what it had become. #MothersDay

  3. Dzien Matki/Mother’s Day (2025)

    Dzien Matki/Mother’s Day (2025)

“Dzien Matki” really means Mother’s Day !

It’s Mother’s Day, but it’s also the day of the villains—each one more devious than the next.

Nina leads a quiet, boring life far removed from the missions of her past—until the day her son Max, who lives with his adoptive parents, is kidnapped. Dzien Matki was released shortly after another Netflix film in the same genre, namely “The Mother” starring Jennifer Lopez. In both cases, there’s a mother who’ll do anything to protect her child, who grew up far away from her. The difference between the two is that Mateusz Rakowicz’s film is probably more brutal, while Niki Caro’s has a slightly more substantial story. However, if you’ve seen the latter, you’ll realize that the story here is truly minimal. The plot is never gripping, and the characters are cartoonish—which can be either annoying or amusing. This Polish action film could have avoided disaster solely thanks to its action scenes… but even there, it falls short. They’re dynamic, well-executed, and well-filmed, but a little too choreographed. You can really see the “Watch out! I’m going to throw my fist here, and you dodge like this! Okay? Perfect!” vibe. The one in the kitchen is awesome. No, just kidding! It’s over-the-top and predictable. Only the first one is any good, maybe.

Unfortunately for those looking for a good laugh, these scenes aren’t all that numerous, and boredom definitely sets in between sequences. Ultimately, it’s a cheap knockoff of John Wick with a plot too trivial to hold your interest even a little bit. Then again, there’s way too much violence and fighting for those who hate that sort of thing. This definitely isn’t a movie for them!

Yes! Another “John Wick”-style hit—but with a Polish twist! Here, a former spy who’s practically become a beggar finds herself saving her son, who was adopted and doesn’t know her. We can’t quite remember why they want to kill him, but we don’t really care. His mother returns to action and kills them one by one. Since this dramatic framework has been done countless times before, this film’s appeal lies in its variations—or even its originality. These are found in the film’s visual style: the movie has a strong visual impact thanks to its cinematography, costumes, and makeup, all influenced by video game aesthetics. The whole thing takes place in Warsaw, featuring a rather wild cast of characters and, of course, very graphic and horrific villains. It unfolds mostly at night in dirty, abandoned factories and basements, with meticulously crafted cinematography and choreography featuring playful visual effects, as I mentioned. In fact, it’s both horrifying and fun! It lacks a barely hinted-at sexual dimension and a sense of subversion !!!

Technically speaking, I don’t think anything is perfect, even though they clearly made an effort to polish every detail. The lead actress, Agnieszka Grochowska, could have been truly impressive. The choreography and sets could have been spectacular, with those damp basements and that old abandoned factory. The film contains very few visually striking ideas. And the open ending, with its humorous nod, hints at a sequel. How awful! A movie like a bag of chips—very crunchy, very satisfying—that you enjoy but forget very quickly.

Here’s a comment I read: “If this is supposed to be a serious thriller, it’s a failure. If it’s some kind of parody, it’s terrible! Maybe it’s in Polish?”

Here’s another review: “A concentration of violence and stupidity. The lead actress isn’t acting—she just sulks. I didn’t have the courage to watch past the 20-minute mark. Even the fight stunts are ridiculous.” It’s always a shame to judge without having seen the whole thing. Although, sometimes, you can obviously be right! The actress isn’t just pulling a long face—she’s depressed because she can’t see or get to know her son. And given the problems she finds herself in, she’s not going to be smiling all the time. In fact, she does smile at one point, and it’s very symbolic.

Anyway! A super-cheap Polish Z-movie. Not much about it works: caricatured characters (though that doesn’t really bother me that much!), dialogue of appalling poverty, relatively disastrous acting, pretty ridiculous fight scenes, and to top it all off, cinematography with a really unattractive yellowish filter. Okay, it’s intentional, but I didn’t like it! I don’t deny the work or the effort that went into it, but for me, this movie is one to avoid… unless you’re a fan of very—or even overly—independent films!

Here’s one last comment to wrap things up: “The movie starts off pretty well, but then there are action scenes that are laugh-out-loud funny—more than just comical. It’s more like a total flop. It’s a far cry from Cynthia Rothrock.”

Indeed, Cynthia Rothrock would have a good laugh watching this movie! That said, as I mentioned, I think it’s a shame to watch only four minutes of a movie and judge it. Even half an hour is too short. Well, if you’re bored out of your mind for more than 45 minutes, then we can start having a discussion.

In this case, for example, we can say the movie is bad! Despite its good ideas, its wacky characters, and despite its nice beginning and ending.

From the outside, it looked like a family enjoying a beautiful afternoon at Dior—champagne, chocolates, laughter, and a husband buying his wife a ring. 9. Let’s get real!

    What bothers you and why?

📌Disclaimer: Please note that if you click on any of the links and make a purchase, I will be receiving a small commission at NO extra cost to you📌

    Hey there, lovely readers!

Today, we’re diving into the wonderful world of pet peeves.

Yep, we’re talking about those little things that just get under your skin and make you want to scream into a pillow.

What bothers you and why? Buckle up because we’re about to take a wilde ride through some common annoyances.

    1. Slow Internet

Let’s kick things off with a classic: slow internet.

Is there anything more infuriating than watching the spinning wheel of death while trying to stream your favourite show?

Or worse, when you’re in the middle of an important Zoom meeting and your screen freezes in the most unflattering way possible.

Seriously, is it too much to ask for a stable connection in the 21st century?

    2. Telemarketers

    Next up, telemarketers.

These persistent callers have an uncanny ability to ring just as you’re sitting down for dinner or when you’re in the middle of a relaxing bath.

    The worst part?

They always seem to have the most important and irrelevant offers just for you.

“Congratulations! You’ve been selected for a free cruise!” Thanks, but I’ll pass.

    3. Overly Loud Chewing

Can we talk about loud chewers for a second?

There’s something about the sound of someone chomping away on their food that can drive even the most patient person up the wall.

It’s like they’re auditioning for a role in a sound effects department.

If I wanted to hear that, I’d turn on an ASMR video.

    4. Endless Email Chains

How about those never-ending email chains?

You know the ones where everyone feels the need to hit “Reply All” with their two cents.

Before you know it, your inbox looks like a novel, and you’re stuck scrolling through 47 messages just to find the original point.

Can we all agree to use “Reply All” sparingly?

    5. Misbehaving Technology

Technology is supposed to make our lives easier, right?

But when your printer decides to have a meltdown right before an important deadline or your phone battery dies at 20%, it feels like the universe is playing a cruel joke.

Don’t even get me started on autocorrect—no, I did not mean “ducking.”

    6. Slow Walkers

And then there are the slow walkers.

You’re in a hurry, weaving through the crowd like a ninja, and then you get stuck behind someone who seems to be taking a leisurely Sunday stroll on a Tuesday morning.

It’s like they’re walking through molasses, and all you can do is smile politely and wait for an opening.

    7. Leftovers with No Expiration Date

Here’s a fun one: leftovers in the fridge with no expiration date.

Is this container of spaghetti from last week or last month? Who knows!

It’s a game of culinary roulette, and the stakes are high.

Do you risk it, or do you toss it? The struggle is real.

So, there you have it—my list of things that bother me and why.

From slow internet to leftover roulette, these little annoyances can really test our patience.

But hey, they also give us something to laugh about (eventually).

What bothers you and why? Share your pet peeves in the comments below—I can’t wait to commiserate with you!

  13. Today is #MothersDay in Poland, and I want to take this moment to appreciate the things my mom would tell me when I was growing up. It was only as an adult that I learned that my mom was really special and a lot of parents aren't so emotionally mature.

Things my mom would tell me:

    - "You can do whatever you want, but you have to predict and accept the consequences of your choices".

Dlaczego to robią? Bo łatwiej wtedy odciąć się od faktu, że zwierzęta pozaludzkie tworzą więzi, troszczą się o swoje dzieci, odczuwają strach, stratę i przywiązanie. Tymczasem słowo "matka" nigdy nie dotyczyło wyłącznie ludzi - słowo to opisuje relację opieki i więzi, którą u zwierząt obserwujemy każdego dnia.

I painted this one as a little love letter to every mother out there — a glowing figure holding a heart, because that's really what it comes down to, isn't it? Carrying love, even when it's heavy.

  16. Unexpected Connections: A Whirlwind Tale of Travel, Beauty, and Serendipity!

Describe a random encounter with a stranger that stuck out positively to you.

📌Disclaimer: Please note that if you click on any of the links and make a purchase, I will be receiving a small commission at NO extra cost to you📌

Picture this: I’m wandering through the bustling streets of a foreign city, lost in the whirlwind of sights and sounds that only travel can offer.

    Travelling around the world

As I navigate the maze of cobblestone alleys and colourful market stalls, I find myself in the most unexpected of encounters – a random encounter with a stranger that would leave a lasting impression on me.

It all started with a chance meeting at a quaint café nestled in the heart of the city.

As I sipped on my espresso, lost in the pages of a gripping thriller from my book recommendations list, a stranger approached me with a warm smile and a twinkle in their eye.

    Books To Read

Little did I know, this encounter would weave together elements of travel, beauty, and serendipity in the most delightful of ways.

We struck up a conversation that spanned topics ranging from our favourite movies to watch to our shared love of exploring new cultures through food.

Movies To watch Food to try

As we exchanged recommendations for must-visit destinations and hidden gems off the beaten path, I couldn’t help but be drawn in by the stranger’s infectious enthusiasm for adventure and discovery.

But it wasn’t just our shared love of travel that bonded us – it was also our mutual appreciation for the finer things in life, like beautiful nails and makeup.

    Beautiful Nails

As we swapped tips and tricks for achieving the perfect manicure or mastering the art of a flawless cat-eye, I couldn’t help but marvel at the unexpected connection we had forged over something as seemingly trivial as beauty.

    Makeup

Our conversation took unexpected turns, delving into topics as diverse as women’s fashion, miniatures, and even the latest tech gadgets.

    Women’s Fashion Miniatures Tech

From discussing the latest trends in women’s shoes to geeking out over all things Xbox, it was a whirlwind of laughter, camaraderie, and shared passions that made me feel like I had known this stranger for a lifetime.

    Women’s shoes All Things Xbox

As the afternoon turned to evening and the café began to empty out, I realized that our chance encounter had turned into something truly magical.

It was a reminder that sometimes, the most meaningful connections come from the most unexpected places – whether it’s halfway across the world or right in your own backyard.

As I bid farewell to my newfound friend and continued on my journey, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the serendipitous encounter that had brightened my day and left me with memories to cherish for a lifetime.

It was a testament to the power of travel, beauty, and human connection to bring people together in the most unexpected of ways.

So here’s to chance encounters, random strangers, and the beautiful moments that make life worth living.

Who knows what adventures await around the next corner – all we have to do is keep our hearts open and be ready to embrace the unexpected with open arms.

Cheers to serendipity, and may we all be lucky enough to experience the joy of a random encounter that leaves a positive and lasting impact on our lives.
