Doing something professionally, for money, sucks the joy out of it. That’s what I’ve heard. There are reasons I can think of for this. I once heard of an artist who looked at a finished piece of her work and asked, “Is this saleable?” I can see how the need to make money off your art is like a gun to your head. Where is your next meal coming from? That’s what your work represents to you, not the joy of your creativity. Stress. Will I be able to survive doing this? Yes, that would suck the joy out of a career in the arts.
