What a full weekend. Thank goodness for work tomorrow, in some respects – it was a really great couple of days but I badly need some recharge quiet time!
Yesterday was the Green Fair on the Square and I picked up my free plants, huzzah! Bumped into a friend, which was lovely. I also rode a bike to make a smoothie for Kid3 and then Dad and I went to a talk by a local elder about resilience and sustainability from an Indigenous perspective. That was super interesting and fascinating and I would have loved to stay and chat with her for hours.
The rest of the day was errands and busyness. Today was a bit the same but with extra gardening (which was, of course, great). I planted the free plants and also the poor kangaroo paws that I believe have been waiting in their pots since last year 😬 Had to get quite aggressive with the trowel to break up some of the roots... hopefully they cope in the ground OK.

I've never been the guardian of a meadow before, so I was never able to participate directly. But since March of this year there is a meadow behind the house we live in I would like to see flourish 💚
It's off to a great start, we have only mowed a pathway through, so I can get to the veggie patch and the tool shed. I want to keep a list of species I've identified and maybe make a little herbarium if I find the time!

Eeeee! A couple of years ago we had a single, uncharacteristically hot summer day of 42°C (like 110F or something, more or less) and it wiped out a bunch of plants and left others sunburnt and damaged. Understandably, the small patch of Corsican mint (that was growing in one section where the murdered lawn used to be) just turned up its toes and died...
Or so I thought! Lookie here what's making a comeback!!

The storm front passing the coast to the north-west is going to mostly miss us, today, which means we've had long patches of welcome sunshine and I was able get out into the garden to lay down some lawn-killing cardboard. Pulled some weeds, said hello to the many bees and ladybirds and inspected the lilly pilly seeds to see if they're sprouting (they are).
I've got two weeks to get through the last of my PhD edits, so instead of being out in the garden as I would like to be, I'm inside writing and revising. But I'm trying to persuade myself that this last push is worth it and once it's finished, the weather will be much more agreeable for gardening and I'll have zero weekend study/work commitments for the rest of the year. What a feeling.

My neighbor cut his lawn a little while ago, and for the past 15 minutes he's been using a gas powered leaf blower to clean up the grass clippings. If he would have grabbed a rake or a broom, he would have been done a long time ago. #killyourlawn

We've got strong winds and heavy rain forecast for tomorrow (Sunday) and Monday so I got into the garden this afternoon for a bit and wrestled with the kikuyu. It is so damned persistent. But I won't give up until it's all gone! And even in writing that, I realise I've managed to get rid of at least two thirds of it. I have been focused so much on what there is left to do that I forgot to take stock.
Anyway this is what I'm dealing with. The ground is soft but even after pulling out as much as I can, I'm still left with roots that go too deep to grab with my fingers. So once I've pulled as much as I can, I cover it with cardboard, paper shopping bags (I had to get groceries delivered when I was sick recently) old magazines, pizza boxes, the community newspaper... the thicker the better. It's such a slow process and even after all that, there will still be tendrils that emerge because it's everywhere (see it poking out of the agapanthus?)
Elsewhere in the garden there's daisies and thyme and dichondra, though, so I just need to keep at it!

Was shocked the other day to discover that more grass is grown on all the #golf courses than all the #lawns . Just like everything else, we are focusing on how much your personal car can save, while rich use up more energy in a day than you can in a year. Golf is a parasitic "sport", and if it must exist it must be community owned an open to everyone. #killyourlawn #capitalism -
Two years ago I decided to slowly replace a big part of my originally bermuda grass-based lawn with frogfruit (Phyla nodiflora). This year is the first time I haven't seen any large clumps of bermuda grass in any section. There are still a few blades here & there, but it's clearly getting crowded out. Happy to have a lawn that I don't need to water that also actually benefits local pollinators now!

Also I took Dad to a garden centre, one I'd never been to before. Such a cool little nursery with very decently priced plants.
He had a couple of gift vouchers and I didn't, but I still bought a bunch of plants. Oops. Had some stuff to do this arvo and was staving off a migraine so I didn't get into the garden today but tomorrow, I will.
