#Greenwashing isn’t excluded from poorly designed #CarboOffset schemes in Australia and a lot more needs to be done to make them work as they are intended to. I know that. But some people are just dead set against leaving a planet that can be habitable to future generations, to satify their short term self-interests and political agenda.
Opposition to a projct which involves native reforestation alongside reduced grazing land (and in this case other ‘agricultural’ production) on whatever grounds sure seems like cutting off your nose to spite your face.
Government handouts to make #ClimateAction happen isn’t a zero sum game. In our current #NeoLIberal economic climate, that is what govt have to do to lower emmissions and save ecosystems for the greater good. It would be better if govt declared whole swathes of Country off limit to exploitation forever, but some nutters would bring up #cultural (whose culture?) and #historical (whose history?) loss as well as loss of productive agricultural land (whatever that means if clearfelling, pesticides, herbicides and fertilizer are all required to make it so). I won’t even talk about the economic and ecological folly of growing meat on the hoof at industrial scales.

#Aboriginal land managers restoring #BassStrait island #lungtalanana to #precolonial conditions facing big hurdles
"Until we get rid of the cats, we cannot put other smaller, more vulnerable species back out on that island"
By Georgia Hogge
Posted Tue 4 Jun 2024"In short: A native rewilding project on the #Tasmanian Bass Strait island of lungtalanana, or #ClarkeIsland, will see #wombats, #wallabies and #potoroos reintroduced to the landscape from next year.
"The island has been managed by #TraditionalOwners as protected land since 2009.
"What's next? #Landcare groups hope to eradicate feral cats from the island and are calling for increased funding from the federal government."
