Over the last fortnight I’ve started hearing #Kookaburras again.
I’ve also spotted a pair of #eagles circling the area very high up a few times.
I’m guessing the active #snake & #rabbit population is bringing these hunters around.
Happy to hear & see the birds. I hope they have a great time eating as many #snakes as they can. 🤞 -

Sadly, the AirBnB we're staying in #Townsville isn't close enough to the laughing #kookaburras for us to be woken up by them in the morning (but it is across the street from a flying fox (fruit bat) colony that does the trick). Fortunately, we do get visits from blue-winged kookaburras who stop by each evening to get fed by our neighbors (and a little later in the night you can hear the bush stone-curlews wailing away). Very pretty birds. Magpie lark (peewie) is not so bad itself.

A shallow creek running through the deep bush, in #Blackwood #Victoria #Australia on this fine Spring day.
Ferns and #gumtrees adorned this space for hundreds of square kilometres… thriving in their natural habitat.
Earlier, #kookaburras were heard ringing out amongst the tree tops.
Blue Wrens flitted throughout the trees.
And no other person was around, for miles.
This is kinda Heaven on Earth!
Sound up!!

This is no laughing matter. A man killed 350 #kookaburras on his property and he only got fined because he had the wrong gun license.
In #Tasmania they are considered an invasive species (brought in by humans to eat snakes in the early 1900s ... I wonder how that worked out), and so receive no protection or legal status. The rest of #Australia protects them due to them being a native species.
My question to my fellow #mastodon tooters, is this a normal thing to do?
If there is an invasive species, does that give us the right to kill it? Does the rights of the ecosystem outweigh the rights of a bird? For a non vegan, I am sure the answer is quite obvious. Cut off the hand so the gangrene doesn't spread.
In relation to #veganism though, this is one of those grey areas that I feel #vegans have had to really think about. Obviously the #vegan solution in this situation is to capture all the kookaburras from the land they have invaded, and release them in their native habitat. The only thing stoping the average person from doing this though is the cost involved and the lack of any real incentive from doing so. 💰
So, are invasive species, such as the Kookaburra, fair game? What do you think?
(And of course, my bias is showing, but do think of the more useful invasive species that also inhabit this land we call home 🐖🐔🐄🐑🐈🐕🐎).
