It’s so true: they - kookaburras - are proficient food thieves & will steal the food right out of your mouth if you don’t get all of it in there fast enough. Seen it happen. Each party got half that sausage. And then, as you say - queue tears. 😭
The thing is, they’re such an attractive bird: attractive to look at, great laugh, pretty feathers, colour scheme etc. that you’re lulled into admiring them… and that’s when they strike. 😆

Six months or so ago we were visited regularly by a couple of fledgling kookaburras. Haven't seen them a while but that's okay because we had a couple of fledgling butcher birds visit after that.

The butcher birds have moved on but these two appeared today. Old friends? They are only a couple of metres away and they can clearly see me through the glass but they don't seem to mind.

There's a fish tank right below them but if these are my old friends, they know there's no way in

Update: I've been doing some research on kingfisher behaviour and beak anatomy, and I've got a theory about what happened.

Kookaburras occasionally fight over food or territory like this, beak wrestling for dominance.

But they have a bunch of serrated, saw-like ridges (tomia) along their bill. I think with the way they were grabbing each other, these got locked together. They also have a hook on the end of their beak for catching prey, and it seems like Left Kooka got their hook caught in Right Kooka somehow - possibly in the nostril!

Then it became like a Chinese finger trap - the only way to get free was for them to push towards each other and unlock their tomia, but they kept trying to pull apart instead, making the hold tighter.

TLDR: These birds were caught in what I'm calling the Kingfisher Bill Trap
