Hello Fediverse Hive Mind!
I've got a question for the Linux mavens.
I use Pop!_Os and have been chomping at the bit to upgrade from 22.04 LTS to the new 24.04 with Rust and the Cosmic desktop.
But I'm a cautious guy and getting on in years, so I don't want to get myself into trouble.
Is it safe?
How is the current state of the new version?
Can I update and have a reliable everyday machine?
I am retired, so I don't use my Linux box for work, just personal stuff.
Thanx and good will to any of you who respond.
Phil "Guillotine" Jones

Many thanks for all the very informed and quite helpful responses to my request for info about self-hosting.
Based on the input I've received, I think this isn't the right time for me to move ahead with this project.
I don't think I could feel as settled about this decision without the guidance of the many if you who know so much more about it than I do.
You all have my gratitude and appreciation. -PhilOkay brilliant and accomplished Mastodonians and Fediversians, it;'s time I consult the hive mind about self-hosting.
I've started to read up on this topic, but I haven't seen a clear answer to THIS question yet:
If I self-host from a desktop computer, must I keep it on all the time, or can I turn it off when I'm doing other things.
Specifically, will incoming emails get lost if they can't be delivered in a timely fashion?
My thanks again to all you wonderful souls.

Question for the Fediverse:
I'm in need of new prescription eyeglasses.
For the last few decades I've been wearing verifocal lenses, which are costly.
My vision issues are slight myopia and significant astigmatism.
My question: To save money, could it be practical to get two pairs, I.e., one pair for distance, and a second pair for reading?
The assumption I'm making is that I could have both acceptable vision and also save money this way.
I suspect that I'm being impractal rather than practical, but I'd love to have that confirmed or refuted by someone who is knowledgeable.
Thank YOU.

A curious question - is there some current analysis about the relation of small non-profits/individual people running opensource services for public (ie. Mastodon, cryptpad etc.) and current EU legislation (like DSA, CRA, NIS2 ... ?).

Help me Obi-Wan Fediverse:
I've discovered that by using my Android devices through a VPN address in an EU nation -- even though I reside in the Untied Snakes -- a lot of Google enshittification gets eliminated. (For example: Preventing YouTube links from working in DuckDuckPlayer.)
Now, pleez tell me that there is an Android OS that will work on a pre-2023 Motorola Moto G Power and a Samsung Tab A9+ tablet so that I can be done with this troublesome Google once and for all.
Greatly appreciate any guidance from the Fediverse hive mind.

CW: Contains First World Rant
Not that anyone noticed, but I have been off the Fediverse for a week.
My lovely wife and I moved house, and I lost access to the internets.
I carefully scheduled installation of new internet service at the new address so that it would be operational when we moved in.
On Installation Day, a technician called to inform me that a neighbor had parked his vehicle in the easement over the internet provider's buried equipment -- rendering it inaccessible.
Apparently the miscreant has done this before.
Now, the soonest the broadband provider can return for an install is February 6.
The worst part of this story is that I had to upgrade my $5.00 per month cell phone service to a $25.00 per month plan in order to get WiFi.
As a "very frugal person," this really chaps my hide.
Also, I can't figure out how to enable hotspot service on my 5-year-old Motorola Moto G Power mobile phone.
(The mobile company's service person told me that this phone can do hotspot tethering. But the toggle for hotspot is grayed out.)
Fediverse Hive Mind, do you have a solution?

Edited to add:
Thank YOU to everyone who responded in any way to his call to the Fediverse for greater knowledge about WiFi routers than I possess.
Finally settled on this 3-unit mesh router set from the Costco online store:
TP-Link Deco BE11000 Wi-Fi 7 Tri-Band Whole-Home Mesh Wi-Fi System, 3-pack.
I've been using an earlier version of this router and satellites with which I've been quite happy.
This new setup represents an upgrade to a higher "G" level.
The set I have now installed easily and quickly, and had an online app with numerous useful system tools and diagnostics. It worked flawlessly for years. I WAS hoping the Fediverse hive would come up with something off the beaten path that would work for me. And now I'm hoping that the new setup works as we'll as the old one.
Again, thanks to all.
We all know something.
Together we know everything.Asking the Fediverse Hive Mind About WiFi routers:
I'm moving to a home where fibre high speed internet is available.
In order to avoid the monthly fee for the service provider's router, I'd like to provide my own.
Are there brands or models you kind folks would recommend?
I'm looking for something offering a good product at a reasonable price. (WiFi 7 seems worth getting.)
Dependable would also be nice.
Thanks to those who would be kind enough to boost.

Dear #FediverseHiveMind, where can I find the world cup #football #soccer matches currently playing? New Zealand is broadcasting car races, most European countries I tried have cycling

Dear #FediverseHiveMind, I'm looking for some accounts to follow (also #Pixelfed) with content I usually get from Instagram: #cooking, stretching exercises, clothes for regular bodies, #ikeahack, memes about European countries, that type of thing. Any recommendations?

No reason, but #FediverseHiveMind - has anyone built at #Substack and especially their new Substack Notes to #ActivityPub/#Mastodon bridge?
Anyone working on hacks or kludges to do so?
