I’m especially loving the regular events that Santilla Chingaipe (and her rotating roster of guest curators) is putting on in #Melbourne / #Narrm lately.
First Chapter is a book-club-ish gathering, collectively reading aloud the first chapter of a book, followed by thoughtful discussions. Recent titles have included Toni Morrison, Virginia Woolf, and Maxine Hong Kingston. Love me a gathering where an intersectional feminist lens is the default.
No Skips are events where an album is played through, in full, in order, to an audience - you can chatter quietly, read a book, dance - how you take in the music is up to you. Recent artists include Miles Davis, Mos Def, Abdullah Ibrahim, and Eddie Palmieri.
They’ve been some of my favourite moments of this winter. The buzz of a new, warm community.
Details can be found here, though Santi’s posts are a bit ephemeral! https://firstchapter.ghost.io

Hey folks, letting you know that the #Newkind Australian Social Change Conference is coming up, running from 30th Sept through to 4th October this year in Dja Dja Wurrung Country, in Redbank, Victoria.
This is genuinely one of the best events I've ever attended, and I'm very fortunate to be speaking again this year. The event prices includes all meals, entertainment, and a place for you to camp, with an option of tent hire available. The conference is family friendly.
I'll personally be presenting on urban plant fibres, enshittification trends, and will also be helping at the repair cafe. There are talks and workshops examing the racial justice, wealth inequality, indigenous knowledge, Polynesian dance, degrowth, and more.

Retoots appreciated.

A wander through the State Library Victoria is always worthwhile.

It was my perfect beach day today - sunny, cold, still and almost deserted.
I am also grateful that I live in a city of 5M+ yet the seawater is clear

Mood.
It's a cold, grey day with rain bearing down on us on the radar. The wind is howling around the corners of the house.
Love how the phone autofocus put a rectangle around the mug. "Ooh, that's a face. I know this."

A related question to that recently posed by @philip
Which is the ❄️ coldest ❄️ railway station in Melbourne?
I vote for Richmond. It's elevated, exposed and has minimal cover. I've also spent a lot of time there waiting for a transfer train

Not all of us get to live in the perfect place.
Chapeau to the frogs who were calling their hearts out in a small wetland next to a suburban service station today

This is how all Australians should respond. Thank you, Uncle Colin, for this moving #WelcomeToCountry. Racism has no place in Australia or anywhere else. #AnzacDay #LestWeForget #WurundjeriCountry #Narrm #AFL

I appreciate that #Narrm #Melbourne is getting all the rain, as it means that soon I'll be collecting all the mushrooms.
But this feels like it's a *lot* of rain.
I guess it's good weather for me to practice getting an ember using a bow drill; little chance of anything catching on fire by accident.

Hey #Narrm #Melbourne folks. It's autumn, and a lot of yucca is starting to bloom.
What you might not know is that the flowers are edible, and honestly pretty good. You can eat them raw, but they are *much* better cooked.

Me too, skywriter, me too! ♥️

Hey folks, if you live in #GlenEira in #Narrm #Melbourne, the council is currently seeking feedback on Social Media.
If you want to express your support for Mastodon as a social media option, then you can do so via their Community Voice group, or by talking to your council representative:

#Narrm / #Melbourne this evening is full of fine folks protesting genocide and the visit of Israeli president Herzog. Love to see it.

Tidied up my lunchbox node a little. I have a battery connector that pokes through the lid hole.
I've got the solar panel hooked up to it now (not shown), and remote admin is working, so after endurance testing it'll be ready for deployment somewhere.

Hi Narrm Melbourne folks!
The next Glen Eira Repair Cafe¹ (GERC) is happening on Saturday 20th September.
We're seeking volunteers *particularly* with sewing skills (although all are welcome). If this sounds like you, and you're happy to spend an afternoon helping people repair their items then please get in touch!
More information on what to expect can be found on our bookings page: https://events.humanitix.com/caulfield-south-community-house-repair-cafe-sept-2025
GERC is a non-profit, volunteer-run group.
Retoots welcome!
Many, many thanks in advance! ♥

Here's all the dried, retted #yucca bundled up on the left. On the right is the finished product from my last batch. Beautiful, strong, cream coloured fibres.
To get there now just requires a lot of manual working of the bundle, followed by lots of and lots brushing.
This isn't particularly hard, but it is time consuming, so it's best done with company, and definitely done outside (it produces lots of chaff).
If you've got a crafts fair, ren faire, or other outdoors event in #Narrm #Melbourne that's broadly aligned with my values and would benefit from a fibre processing demonstration, hit me up.
Otherwise I'll likely be cleaning and dressing these fibres the next time I'm camping or at a picnic with friends. ❤️

CW: Why did the Narrm cryptobro stay on the heavily congested road?

Did something change recently with #Vline in #Narrm / #Melbourne? It feels like the whole process of getting a ticket and catching a train is considerably more confusing and fraught than I used to remember.

Oh good, text from the utility company saying they're hoping power will be restored by Thursday.
Time to eat all the ice-cream, I guess...
