  1. I didn't know today was National Potato Day when I harvested my Kennebec potatoes this morning.

  2. Enjoyed our first ever Kellogg's Breakfast tomato from our garden with dinner tonight.

What a treat! It was much sweeter and less acidic than we expected.

  3. Lots of flower buds on my over five foot tall stiff goldenrod (Solidago rigida).

They seem like the flowers will open any day now.

  4. Up-potted my Marvel of Four Seasons lettuce this morning.

And transplanted several lettuce plants under the shade of peppers growing in a raised bed.

Fingers crossed the lettuce survives the hot days of early August in southeast Michigan.

  5. In early June, one of my three potted pawpaw saplings died.

At least I thought it was dead. Kept the pot with some other potted saplings I haven't planted yet.

This morning I found what I believed was a dead pawpaw sapling had sprouted four new leaves.

  6. Finally, my Empress of India nasturtiums are blooming.

First time I've grown Empress of India variety. In the past few years I've grown Jewel Mix and Alaska Mix nasturtiums from seed.

Empress of India seed packet said blooming would be 50-60 days after germination.

    Took 75 days.

  7. I haven’t done a #BloomScrolling post in what feels like forever. I’m always in awe at the abuse blanketflowers put up with, and they just keep blooming.

These Gaillardia pulchella aka Indian blanket or firewheel are in a pot at the end of our driveway and about 5 ft beyond comfortable watering with the hose. I try to keep them watered but it’s pretty sparse.

  8. My Marvel of Four Seasons lettuce germinated yesterday in a pot, with two seeds sprouting in the morning.

By yesterday afternoon, more than a dozen seeds germinated.

Took 2 days to germinate after planting, compared to 3 days last year when I planted lettuce in August.

I learned lettuce won't germinate when soil temperature is high.

So I put seeds & potting soil in the fridge for two days before planting in a pot.

  11. Looks like one of the tomatoes I picked up at our local library plant swap may be Kellogg's Breakfast.

    Or Berkeley Tie-dye Pink.

    The tomatoes are still green.

Gardener who brought the plants didn't have labels for them but shared with me the five varieties they grew from seed. Two varieties were beefsteak tomatoes.

  12. My one zucchini, which I discovered yesterday in the garden, survived the night.

I suspected some animal might get to it overnight.

In the past, my luck with growing zucchini has not been good. Due to animals or insects.

  13. My Takii's Choice zinnia seeds, first time I've planted them, are the first zinnias to bloom in my garden this year.

The pastel yellows of Takii's Choice are a nice change.

I'm used to the vivid and brilliant colors of Lilliput and State Fair zinnia varieties which I've grown from seed as well.

They look like they'll be blooming within the next week.

  14. Between the short growing season and the tree shade, the hot pepper is now maturing after wintering in the kitchen. It took more than a year. lol

This is a byproduct of sprinkling the crushed red pepper (spice) around the transplanted seedlings as protection against being dug up by rodents late last spring.

    Fresno peppers? 🌶️

  16. Planted Genovese basil seeds July 5.

Seed packet says germination in 7-10 days.

They sprouted today, 4 days later.

  17. I was surprised to find one of my common elderberries, which I grew from cuttings and planted this spring, has a small head of white flowers.

From what I've read, it's recommended to remove the flowers in the first year so the elderberry can focus energy on developing roots.

  18. For gardeners who grow garlic, what vegetables have you successfully grown in the space after you pulled the garlic?

  19. Clouds earlier this morning gave me time to dig up my garlic.

Now the sun is starting to peek through the clouds.
